T vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
AT&T, formerly known as SBC Communications Inc. (SBC), was formed as one of several regional holding companies created to hold AT&T Corp.’s (ATTC) local telephone companies. On January 1, 1984, we were spun-off from ATTC pursuant to an anti-trust consent decree, becoming an independent publicly... More

- Thursday, October 13, 2011, 5:35 PM AT&T (T) has provided "almost nothing" to support its claim that its proposed $39B merger with T-Mobile USA (DTEGY.PK) would create between 55,000 and 96,000 jobs, the FCC says in a letter. The agency has to clear the deal for it to go through. The Justice Department separately has sued to block the merger on competition grounds. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, October 13, 2011, 4:54 PM Much like deal opponent Sprint (S), the FCC appears skeptical of AT&T's (T) claim its planned merger with T-Mobile will create jobs. The agency, whose Chairman claims to have "serious concerns" about the merger, has sent Ma Bell a letter (.pdf) asking for further details on the merger's job effect, calling AT&T's responses thus far "incomplete." Comment! [M&A]
- Sunday, October 9, 2011, 6:32 AM At&T (T) sold over 200,000 iPhone 4S (AAPL) devices within 12 hours of the handset becoming available for pre-order on Friday. This was despite the product receiving a lukewarm reacton from analysts, although sales might have been boosted by the effect of Steve Jobs' death on comsumers' emotions. 9 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, October 6, 2011, 1:17 PM Stifel's Tom Roderick claims the role of Synchronoss' (SNCR) software in handling iPhone (AAPL) activations for U.S. carriers is "quietly expanding," making the company well-positioned to benefit from iPhone 4S demand. Synchronoss' products fully handle the iPhone activation process for T, and partly handle it for VZ and S. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, October 6, 2011, 9:19 AM Sprint (S) gains 2.1% premarket after the company makes its official iPhone (AAPL) announcement. As expected, Sprint will offer the iPhone 4 and 4S at subsidized prices matching those of VZ and T, but unlike those carriers, will sell unlimited data plans for the phones. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 8:30 AM Acme Packet (APKT) has rebounded a little, but is still down 16.2% premarket thanks to its Q3 warning, blamed by management on the push-out of a deal with AT&T (T). Wedbush is upgrading Acme to Outperform following its drop, while Deutsche is reiterating a Buy, arguing the voice-over-IP market still represents a major growth opportunity for the company. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, October 4, 2011, 10:34 AM As regulators continue challenging its planned merger with AT&T (T), T-Mobile remains aggressive on the pricing front. The latest proof: a $30/month plan featuring unlimited text and data, along with 100 voice minutes. The plan could allow T-Mobile to snag some low-end customers from T, VZ, and S, but a relatively weak phone lineup could be a handicap. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, September 30, 2011, 6:14 PM Verizon (VZ) presses an appeals court to block the FCC's net neutrality rules - which forbid broadband service providers from restricting users' access to lawful content - set to take effect Nov. 20. Critics on the other side say the rules are weak and favor providers with large Net presences, like AT&T (T) and Comcast (CMCSA). Comment!
- Tuesday, September 27, 2011, 2:27 PM Several major phone vendors are giving their support to the Isis mobile payments JV launched by VZ, T, and T-Mobile. While these moves don't preclude vendors from also supporting Google Wallet, they could throw a wrench into Google's hopes for market dominance. AAPL hasn't yet announced support for either Isis or Google Wallet. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, September 22, 2011, 1:26 PM Clearwire (CLWR -3%) resumes trading after the stock was briefly halted over reports it was in talks with AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) about 4G LTE network use. Just yesterday, Clearwire's CFO had commented that the company would consider selling some spectrum if the right opportunity presented itself. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, September 22, 2011, 10:45 AM AT&T (T) CEO Randall Stephenson tells investors he expects 2012's business environment to look much like 2011's, with "little activity" in the low-end consumer market, and unchanged trends on the high-end. Stephenson also sees AT&T's business services division, which declined 4.1% Y/Y in Q2, returning to growth in Q4. Comment!
- Wednesday, September 21, 2011, 5:00 PM While cable companies such as CMCSA and TWC are losing TV subscribers to telcos such as T and VZ, TeleGeogrphy believes this is more than offset by the ability of their broadband and voice businesses to gain share. Worldwide, cable companies now have over 100M broadband subscribers, and over 65M voice subscribers. (earlier) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, September 21, 2011, 4:46 PM While the DOJ and Sprint (S) oppose the AT&T/T-Mobile (T) merger, Verizon (VZ), which could benefit from the removal of T-Mobile as a low-cost competitor, continues to give the deal its tacit support. CEO Lowell McAdam demonstrates this support again today by claiming the merger "had to occur" due to spectrum shortages. Comment! [M&A]
- Wednesday, September 21, 2011, 8:41 AM Though their voice-related profits are under pressure, text messaging is still a major cash cow for carriers such as VZ, T, and S. A Pew Internet survey estimates U.S. adults sent an average of 41.5 texts/day as of this spring, up from 39.1 in the year-ago period. 18-24 year-olds were by far the most prolific users, averaging 109.5 texts/day. (.pdf) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 1:43 PM CNBC reports 100 GOP House members have sent a letter to the the President saying killing the AT&T (T +2%)/T-Mobile (DTEGY.PK +3.1%) deal will thwart job creation. The house delegation is clearly talking in the general sense, as the immediate effect of a merger is likely to mean the layoff of thousands. 5 Comments [M&A, Tech, Breaking News]
- Monday, September 19, 2011, 1:11 PM TiVo (TIVO -2.2%) slips after Caris' David Miller cuts shares to Neutral. Though considering a settlement to TiVo's patent suits against AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) likely, Miller feels "nervous" about their current status, following a delay in the AT&T trial. He also thinks TiVo's risk/reward is unfavorable following its recent run-up. Comment! [Tech]
