T vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
AT&T, formerly known as SBC Communications Inc. (SBC), was formed as one of several regional holding companies created to hold AT&T Corp.’s (ATTC) local telephone companies. On January 1, 1984, we were spun-off from ATTC pursuant to an anti-trust consent decree, becoming an independent publicly... More

- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 11:11 PM Google (GOOG) has held talks with Dish Network (DISH) about building a massive 4G network using Dish's spectrum, the WSJ reports, while cautioning the talks "aren't advanced and could amount to nothing." Such a tie-up would be costly for Google and risk hurting carrier support for Android, but there would also be benefits. Google "wants people to watch 10 hours of YouTube a day ... what hurts them is [wireless carriers] restricting capacity," observes BTIG's Walter Piecyk. Sprint (S) and Clearwire (CLWR) have been named in the past as potential Dish partners (I, II). 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 9:35 AM After insisting for much of last year that it needed the aborted T-Mobile deal to go through to address a spectrum shortage, AT&T (T) now claims a series of smaller spectrum purchases, highlighted by its deals with Qualcomm and Nextwave, leave it "well-positioned" to address its 4G needs. DSLReports: "AT&T has a long history of over-emphasizing capacity and spectrum constraints in order to get what they want from regulators and politicians." (capex plans) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 1:18 PM AT&T (T) is doing its best to poach Sprint (S) subscribers still using its legacy Nextel network, ahead of the network's planned June '13 shutdown. Ma Bell introduced new "rugged" phones today, aimed at the kind of professional workers that make up much of Nextel's subscriber base, and is offering a $5/month push-to-talk to go with them. Sprint's recapture rate for departing Nextel subs stood at 59% in Q3. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, November 9, 2012, 9:20 AM In another piece of good news for Apple (AAPL), AT&T (T) says its iPhone 5 supply situation is improving ahead of the holiday season. The online Apple Store still shows 3-4 week shipping times for all models. Separately, AT&T is now offering a $100 discount on 3G/4G tablets in exchange for a 2-year data contract. If other carriers follow suit, that could provide a a lift to sales of 3G/4G tablets, which have proven much less popular than Wi-Fi-only models. Qualcomm (QCOM) made cautious remarks about 3G/4G tablet demand on Wednesday's earnings call. (Piper's checks) 9 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 11:41 AM Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) plans to finish its 4G LTE rollout by the middle of 2013, says CFO Fran Shammo. That's 6 months ahead of Verizon's original plan, and 18 months ahead of AT&T (T), which wants to offer LTE to 300M Americans by the end of 2014. Verizon plans to cover 260M people by year's end, well above AT&T's 150M. Shammo adds 13% of Verizon's customers now use its expensive shared data plans, and that he'd "love to see [Windows Phone 8] be a successful platform. (AT&T capex) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 6:53 PM Cord-cutting isn't doing tremendous damage to the pay-TV industry, but it is leading penetration rates to fall a bit. U.S. pay-TV providers collectively shed 127K subs in Q3, per Bernstein's data, as a net loss of 499K cable subs offset a net gain of 372K telco/satellite subs. But that figure is below Q2's 410K decline, and still leaves the industry with a small net increase over the last 4 quarters. (Nielsen) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 6:20 PM AT&T (T -3.3%) plans to tap debt markets to help finance its investment plans: its net debt-to-EBITDA ratio is expected to rise to 1.8 from 1.42 over the next 2 years. With corporate debt yields remaining extremely low, it wouldn't be surprising if AT&T also used the proceeds to buy back stock, something it has been very fond of doing lately. Some think AT&T's buildout partly stems from its failure (unlike Verizon) to sell off rural assets. "They're doing it because they really have to do it," says analyst Jonathan Chaplin. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 1:36 PM U.S. cell tower owners American Tower (AMT +2.4%), SBA (SBAC +1.6%), and Crown Castle (CCI +0.8%) are also getting a lift from AT&T's (T -2.3%) capex plans, which include a push to offer 4G LTE services as a broadband option for rural areas. Wells Fargo expects AMT to benefit from AT&T's plan to adds 10K new cell sites and 40K small cells, while Citi views Ciena (CIEN +8%), Juniper (JNPR +1.8%), Cisco (CSCO -0.9%), and Adtran (ADTN +4.2%) as beneficiaries of Ma Bell's wireline investments. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 10:17 AM In addition to hiking its dividend, AT&T (T -2.9%) says it plans to spend $22B on capex each of the next 3 years, up from 2011's $19B-$20B. $8B will be spent on building AT&T's 4G LTE network, which trails Verizon (VZ -1.5%) in terms of coverage, and $6B on expanding its wireline broadband network. AT&T is also guiding for mid-single-digit annual EPS growth over this time. Capex-starved telecom equipment/component names are rallying. CIEN +11.2%. ADTN +8.1%. APKT +5.8%. JNPR +2.1%. JDSU +6.8%. ALU +2.5%. (investor day: webcast, slides) 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 8:54 AM AT&T Corp (T) declares $0.45/share quarterly dividend, 2.3% increase from prior dividend of $0.44. For shareholders of record Jan 10. Payable Feb. 1. Ex-div Jan 8. (PR) 6 Comments [Dividends]
- Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 12:06 PM AT&T (T) will sell Nokia's (NOK) Lumia 920 and 820 for $100 and $50 apiece with contracts. The 920's price (like that of the Lumia 900) undercuts the iPhone and many high-end Android models, but is only par with AT&T's pricing for HTC's Windows Phone 8X. Reviews for the 920 (I, II, III) have been positive, but not glowing. Much will come down to the extent consumers embrace a UI that's radically different from Android and iOS, and are willing to accept a smaller app ecosystem. 30 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 5, 2012, 5:53 PM Citi is out with its latest investment screen selecting U.S.-based dividend-paying stocks of companies that also earn approval in the credit markets. Three newcomers make the list - MRK, PFE, PGN - plus a dozen holdovers: MO, AEP, T, BMY, COP, ED, D, DUK, LLY, LMT, SO, VZ. 11 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, November 2, 2012, 2:47 PM The iPhone 5 is still supply-constrained at U.S. Apple Stores, says Piper's Gene Munster after polling 70 of them. He also found ongoing shortages at AT&T and Verizon, though Sprint's situation is said to be improving. Those comments are probably contributing to today's Apple (AAPL -2.7%) selloff, especially since Munster's Oct. 4 report on shortages proved accurate. On a more positive note, Munster's poll of 730 U.S. consumers found 55% of those planning to buy a smartphone indicating they want an iPhone 5. 37 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 11:50 AM VC firm Andreessen Horowitz just invested $15.5M in ItsOn, a startup hoping to change how carriers such as AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) charge for mobile data. Instead of charging users monthly for a bucket of data good for any app, consumers, carriers, and developers would be able to pay/bill for specific apps over various periods of time. Getting carriers to change is never easy, but the fact AT&T and others have already talked about per-app billing suggests ItsOn's approach could find some takers. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 10:26 AM AT&T (T -0.9%) gives back the premarket gains it saw following its Q3 report (I, II). For yet another quarter, stock buybacks (they soared to $3.8B in Q3) allowed EPS to beat estimates even as revenue missed. Also, total wireless net adds fell to 678K from Q2's 1.3M, and postpaid net adds fell to 151K from 320K. Wireless operating margin fell 410 bps Q/Q to 26.2%, partly due to a 20% Q/Q increase in smartphone sales. Total churn rose to 1.34% from Q2's low 1.18%. Verizon (VZ +0.9%), interestingly, is going in the opposite direction. 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 9:38 AM Apple (AAPL +1.8%) bounces after AT&T (T) discloses it activated 4.7M iPhones in Q3, well above Q2's 3.7M. That figure comes in spite of Ma Bell's admission iPhone 5 supply constraints affected its postpaid net adds. Apple sold off yesterday on concerns about the iPad Mini's pricing, and perhaps also Tim Cook's claim that cumulative iPad sales topped 100M 2 weeks ago - that implies FQ4 sales of 16M, below an 18M consensus. FQ3 iPad sales were boosted by inventory builds, something that may have led to an FQ4 inventory draw-down. 15 Comments [Tech]
