T vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
AT&T, formerly known as SBC Communications Inc. (SBC), was formed as one of several regional holding companies created to hold AT&T Corp.’s (ATTC) local telephone companies. On January 1, 1984, we were spun-off from ATTC pursuant to an anti-trust consent decree, becoming an independent publicly... More

- Thursday, October 11, 2012, 10:12 AM Sprint (S +12.6%) has given back a chunk of the early gains it saw on a report SoftBank is in talks to buy a majority stake in the #3 U.S. carrier. SoftBank's cool response to the report - the Japanese carrier calls it "based on speculation" - might have something to do with the pullback. Analyst Kevin Roe thinks the report could indicate a ~$6.40/share offer price - Sprint is currently moving at $5.68. Verizon (VZ -1.2%) and AT&T (T -0.9%) are off moderately. (also) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 11:29 AM MetroPCS (PCS -5.2%) and Leap Wireless (LEAP -3.5%) slide after T-Mobile decides to revive its unlimited data plans. Sprint (S -1.5%) is off slightly. Low-end carriers have clearly decided to challenge market leaders AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) on price, hoping the latter's de facto price hikes will leave them vulnerable. Will the AT&T/Verizon "duopoly" continue gaining share, or are their latest pricing moves an act of hubris that will backfire? 12 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 10:05 AM Akamai (AKAM +3.5%) and Limelight (LLNW +6.8%) jump after Dan Rayburn reports AT&T (T) is in talks to re-sell CDN services from one of the companies. Rayburn adds the deal "is now Akamai's to lose," but no decision has been made. An AT&T deal would do much to soothe fears among Akamai and Limelight investors of direct competition from major telcos - Rayburn notes neither AT&T nor any other telco has a huge CDN business right now. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 7:43 AM More on AT&T (T): Earnings +10% Y/Y. Wireless operating income margin 30.3% from 26.9% last year. Wireless EBITDA service margin 45% from 41.1% last year. 5.1M smartphone sales, 3.7M iPhone activations. 61.9% of postpaid subscribers have smartphones, from 49.9% last year. Shares +1.5% premarket. (PR) 5 Comments [Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, May 11, 2012, 7:49 AM Verizon and AT&T get upgrades to Outperform from Neutral at Credit Suisse, which also bumps VZ's price target to $45 from $38, and T to $36.50 from 30. Verizon +0.6% premarket. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 10:02 AM It looks as if AT&T's (T) smartphone slowdown (likely affected by subsidy tightening and a cooling U.S. market) is hurting activation/provisioning software firm Synchronoss (SNCR -24.4%), which is crashing post-earnings. Synchronoss, which gets about half its revenue from AT&T, says it expects Q2 revenue of $65M-$68M, below a $68.6M consensus. It expects only 5%-10% growth in AT&T sales this year, below prior estimates. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 9:34 AM More on AT&T's (T +2.2%) Q1: A 41% Q/Q smartphone sales drop contributed to AT&T's wireless operating margin rising to 27.2%, up 140 bps Y/Y and 1200 bps Q/Q. Also, Ma Bell delivered 726K wireless net adds (includes 460K tablet/PC data plans) and churn of 1.1% (1.21% in Q4), and a 1.7% Q/Q increase in ARPU to $64.46. 200K U-Verse TV subs were added and wireline data revenue rose 8.7% Y/Y, but wireline voice fell 10%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 7:31 AM AT&T (T): Q1 EPS of $0.60 beats by $0.03. Revenue of $31.8B (+1.8% Y/Y) in-line. Shares +1.7% premarket. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 8, 2012, 3:15 PM Sprint (S +7.8%) shares surge after Wells Fargo says the no. 3 wireless operator is picking up subscribers from AT&T (T) and T-Mobile (DTEGY.PK). AT&T has hiked prices on smartphone data plans for new subscribers and has set caps on heavy data users; getting the iPhone last year also has helped Sprint gain users from T-Mobile. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 2, 2012, 5:59 PM Dish Network (DISH) -3.5% AH after the FCC denies its request for a waiver needed to operate a planned 4G network, in-line with a Thursday report. CEO Charlie Ergen recently said Dish, which was given the go-ahead to buy spectrum from DBSD and TerreStar, would "look at other alternatives" if the FCC denied its request. Prospective suitor AT&T (T) must be pleased. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 16, 2012, 9:16 AM In-line with recent speculation, the WSJ claims AT&T (T) is mulling an acquisition to boost its spectrum holdings, following the failure of the T-Mobile deal and the regulatory nixing of LightSquared. On its radar is not only Dish Network (DISH - previously), but also discount carriers Leap Wireless (LEAP +3.8%) and MetroPCS (PCS +0.9%). However, it's added any deal will likely take months to form. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, February 13, 2012, 10:40 AM TiVo (TIVO +2.2%) trades higher after inking a licensing deal with AT&T AdWorks (T) that will allow it to leverage anonymous household viewing data from AT&T's U-verse TV service, as well as TiVo boxes. TiVo claims the deal will allow it to improve the quality of its customer research and advertising services. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 3, 2012, 2:59 PM Leap Wireless (LEAP +6.4%) and MetroPCS (PCS +3%) have enjoyed much of the cheap smartphone pre-paid market, but BTIG believes that could change with the plan America Movil (AMX +3.8%) is expected to offer in the U.S., a SIM card that can be used in any AT&T (T) or T-Mobile phone, including the "the healthy inventory of used iPhones." (AAPL) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, January 30, 2012, 5:27 PM Dish Network (DISH +2.8%) closed higher after Credit Suisse noted AT&T (T) has dropped its call for an extensive FCC review of Dish's request for a waiver that would allow it to use its spectrum to provide 4G mobile services. Credit Suisse sees the move as evidence AT&T, which is facing a spectrum shortage following the collapse of the T-Mobile deal, is hungry to buy Dish's airwaves. (previously) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, January 27, 2012, 1:57 PM Dish Network (DISH -3.6%) is selling off, likely thanks to a Detwiler Fenton report claiming the satellite TV provider is getting serious about its plans to use its spectrum assets to build out a mobile network, likely in partnership with an existing carrier. Investors fear such a move would be an expensive gamble, and could reduce the near-term likelihood of an AT&T (T) bid. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 20, 2012, 3:45 AM Vodafone (VOD) wins its case in India's top court, and isn't liable for up to $4.4B in back-taxes and penalties. This is exceedingly good news both for Vodafone and for other firms fighting similar tax cases in India, including GE (GE), SABMiller (SBMRF.PK), Cadbury (KFT), AT&T (T) and Sanofi-Aventis (SNY). Vodafone +1.8% in London. Comment! [Top Stories, Tech, Global & FX, On the Move]
