Monday, June 17, 2:37 PM The Supreme Court's ruling regarding challenges to generic drug deals "is a significant victory for American consumers, American taxpayers, and free markets," the FTC says, noting that the ruling against "pay-for-delay agreements" makes it clear that these deals are subject to antitrust scrutiny. As MarketWatch notes however, stocks have pretty much shrugged it off with Actavis (ACT -1%) and AbbVie (ABBV -0.8%) down a bit, Teva (TEVA +0.3%) acting like nothing happened, and Impax (IPXL -0.7%) down only fractionally. Until recently, only women aged at least 17 could buy the pill without a prescription. The decision comes after an appeals court said last week that an older two-pill version should be available over the counter on an unlimited basis. Monday, May 6, 1:36 PM Merck (MRK -1.3%) gets no love today from the FDA's approval of Liptruxet late Friday, as the stock is likely dragged down with the rest of the big pharma names on the back of a CNBC report that criticizes their earnings so far. The article points to the fact that pharmaceutical companies have seen a 4.7% contraction in earnings, and a 3.2% drop in revenue this quarter. Why? Friday, May 3, 5:43 PM An FDA panel has voted 17-1 that Amgen's (AMGN) blood-boosting drugs would benefit radiation survivors in the event of a nuclear attack. The drugs, known as Leukocyte growth factor drugs, are normally given to cancer patients to combat the effects of chemotherapy. The panel observed monkeys exposed to radiation, and those given AMGN's Neupogen showed a greater likelihood of survival, and the FDA says it's likely to provide the same benefit to people as well.
