- Monday, May 6, 1:36 PM Merck (MRK -1.3%) gets no love today from the FDA's approval of Liptruxet late Friday, as the stock is likely dragged down with the rest of the big pharma names on the back of a CNBC report that criticizes their earnings so far. The article points to the fact that pharmaceutical companies have seen a 4.7% contraction in earnings, and a 3.2% drop in revenue this quarter. Why? - Friday, May 3, 5:43 PM An FDA panel has voted 17-1 that Amgen's (AMGN) blood-boosting drugs would benefit radiation survivors in the event of a nuclear attack. The drugs, known as Leukocyte growth factor drugs, are normally given to cancer patients to combat the effects of chemotherapy. The panel observed monkeys exposed to radiation, and those given AMGN's Neupogen showed a greater likelihood of survival, and the FDA says it's likely to provide the same benefit to people as well. - Monday, April 29, 10:28 AM Biogen Idec (BIIB +4.9%) gains this morning after giving an update on Tecfidera prescription performance. According to data, the drug has already garnered nearly 8% of the multiple sclerosis market through the week ended April 19, with prescriptions up 120% over the prior week. The ruling won't affect AstraZeneca's 2013 revenue guidance, but it will hurt royalties that the company receives from Teva's (TEVA) version of Pulmicort. The Supreme Court is due to hear a "pay for delay" a case today over whether it's legal for drug companies to pay generic rivals tens of millions of dollars to hold off from launching copycat versions of medicines. The case is the FTC vs Actavis (ACT) and involves Abbott Labs' (ABT) AndroGel testosterone treatment. The FTC says the practice costs customers $3.5B a year, while drug firms argue that it protects innovation.
