- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 8:26 AM Teva (TEVA) halts the development of a proposed $300M distribution center in Northeast Philadelphia, saying that it "cannot elaborate further about plans for this property." Earlier this month, Teva said it's reassessing its international operations as part of a scheme to slash expenses by $1.5-2B over the next 3-5 years. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Monday, December 17, 2012, 6:17 AM Teva (TEVA) enters into a JV with South Korea's Handok Pharmaceuticals to sell the Israel company's drugs in the country, where the market is worth $14B and where healthcare spending is expected to hit 9% of GDP within three years. The move fits in with Teva's new strategy, which includes expanding its global presence and carrying out more business development. (PR) 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Friday, December 14, 2012, 1:43 PM AstraZeneca (AZN +0.2%) says an Appeals Court has upheld the decision finding that the substance patent protecting Crestor is valid and enforceable. The defendants may seek a rehearing or review by the U.S. Supreme Court. Absent a reversal, none of the Abbreviated New Drug Applications filed may be approved by the FDA prior to expiration of the patent, which expires in 2016. The ruling covers rosuvastatin calcium, the active ingredient in Crestor. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Sunday, December 9, 2012, 2:27 AM The Supreme Court will review a "pay for delay" case in which Solvay, now owned by Abbott Labs (ABT), paid three generic drug companies to up to $40M a year, including Watson (WPI), to postpone making copycat versions of Solvay's Androgel testosterone treatment. The case has industry wide ramifications, with the FTC saying the practice costs customers $3.5B a year. (previous) 1 Comment [Healthcare, Top Stories]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 4:41 AM The Supreme Court could say today whether it will review a case involving a "pay for delay" agreement in which a pharmaceutical company pays generic rivals tens of millions of dollars to hold off from launching copycat versions of medicines. The FTC says the practice costs customers $3.5B a year, while drug firms argue that it protects innovation. Companies that could be affected include Abbott (ABT), Watson (WPI), Merck (MRK), Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) and Teva (TEVA). Comment! [Healthcare, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 10:11 AM The patent cliff has been good for generic-drugs companies this year, with over 40 brand-name treatments with $35B of annual sales losing their IP protection. However, the sector faces its own patent cliff over the next couple of years, due to fewer drugs losing that protection. In response, the generic companies are specializing in treatments that are hard to make, selling their own branded medicines, or making big acquisitions. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 8:24 AM Galena (GALE) soars 17.2% after signing a deal with Teva (TEVA) for the commercialization of its NeuVax breast cancer treatment in Israel. The shares are being offered as units, with no amount given at present. - Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 3:00 PM Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA +0.9%) agrees to delay the introduction of generic versions of two Gilead (GILD -0.9%) HIV drugs, Truvada and Viread, until June 1 or until a judge rules on the patent fight between the two companies. GILD sued TEVA in 2008 and again in 2010, claiming its FDA applications to make HIV drugs infringed four of its patents. The complaints also listed the HIV drug Atripla, which wasn’t cited in today’s filing. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 8:50 AM Teva (TEVA) is putting a freeze on the type of multi-billion dollar acquisitions that have spurred its growth, Chairman Phillip Frost indicates, unless something something "so compelling and so game-changing" crops up. Instead, "there is the opportunity for product acquisitions, for small company acquisitions, for technology acquisitions," Frost says. 1 Comment [Healthcare, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 9:40 AM While multiple-sclerosis patients have waited years for pills to be developed to treat the debilitating disease, doctors are warning them to be wary. That's because drugs such as Novartis' (NVS) Gilenya and Sanofi's (SNY) Aubagio can have significant side-effects. All of which is positive for Teva (TEVA), whose Copaxone is injected rather than taken orally. 4 Comments [Healthcare]
