Yes, this is really useful. ReplyUnder The Radar News - Wednesday [view article]
I've been trying to figure out why Siemens is down all morning. No one but you gave early coverage. Thanks so much for your astute coverage of this foreign blue chip. ReplyWal-Mart's "Save Money, Live Better" Is a Winner! [view article]
this article is dead on - Wal-Mart is running clean, well stocked stores and the service level has picked up - to the point where sometimes I wonder if the pendulum has swung to far the other way - anyway, Target is slipping and I agree with the Home Depot analogy - but Target still finds a way to present the unique and different at a value price which will help them in the long run at differentiating from WM- 2008 should be an interesting year for all retailers ReplyMy 2008 Market Prediction [view article]

Well said. Even if this Christmas selling season should prove to be a bummer both TGT and JWN remain excellent stocks for the future. Should the price of either fall further then it would provide an even better opportunity to "stock up" ReplyWalmart: Sales So Far Look Very Encouraging [view article]
Yeah, that's right! And the only thing that seemed informative in this article is when it compared WalMart to Target. I shopped at Walmart today, and Target didn't even enter my mind as an alternative, though I do like the atmosphere in Target better. Personally, I wouldn't buy stock in either one of them, having been in retail for 15 years, and know how to increase sales. Increased sales DO NOT mean increased profit. It usually helps, but there's a law of diminishing returns at work, when you reduce the wrong items too much to get those sales.I think all retailers are scared as hell this year and all are sacrificing profit to get those sales, so that they don't get stuck with inventory. Walmart: Sales So Far Look Very Encouraging [view article]
the biggest problem with wmt's 1-2 % same store sales gains is that inflation is running at a higher rate; as such, when one price adjusts their sales, it turns out that they're nor improving at all. Improvement means more than selling the same box of soap this year for 1.02 than was sold last year for 1.00.the true criteria for retail growth is "same store operating margin; the test whether from one yr to the next a store can maintain its core profitability it is a lot harder to manipulate those numbers since you can easily "buy" sales with lower prices but "buying" margin is a lot tougher Reply

Was there enough data so early to suggest that sales will be better than expected, or was this a pure sentiment move? ReplyShorting Costco On Valuation and Discount Retail Trends [view article]
Ouch! This is the first time we totally disagree with your analysis this year!"make COST an appealing short in the coming year".
We think the opposite is true. A short term short position is likely to do better than a long term short position. As the economy slows, COST should pick up in most areas, including California, as people look for new ways to save a little on the COL.
