- Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 6:35 PM More on THQ (THQI): FQ4 beats estimates. Net losses widened however as the maker of videogames and accessories continues to try to turn itself around following a disastrous dropoff in sales during the holiday shopping season. Shares -1.5% AH. Comment! [Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 4:29 PM THQ (THQI): FQ4 EPS of -$0.12 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $171M (-31% Y/Y) beats by $13M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech]
- Monday, May 7, 2012, 2:36 PM THQ (THQI +8%), whose future has been put in doubt by cash burn and plunging sales, is rallying after confirming it will make a sequel to the popular '06 title Company of Heroes. The game, due in early 2013, has only been announced for the PC thus far. THQ has been attempting to focus its R&D efforts on a handful of popular franchises. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 8:39 AM Videogame maker THQ (THQI) +40% premarket after raising its FQ4 outlook due to strong sales of its Saints Row: The Third game. Expected EPS loss is now $0.10-$0.20 vs. consensus loss of $0.40, on revenue of $160M-$170M vs. $142.3M consensus. THQ expects to report cash and cash equivalents of ~$76M, three times higher than its previous estimate. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, April 13, 2012, 8:13 AM March was another dismal month for U.S. retail video game sales, per NPD. Hardware sales fell 35% Y/Y, and software sales 25% - figures worse than February's 18% and 23%, respectively. The Xbox 360 (MSFT) was again the best-selling console, and Electronic Arts' (EA) Mass Effect 3 was the most popular game. With Xbox and PlayStation (SNE) refreshes not arriving until next year, and mobile device competition only intensifying, sales could remain under pressure for a while. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 5:56 PM Though casual gamers are embracing mobile and social titles, and rumors have spread the next Xbox won't feature physical discs (contrary rumors also exist), Wedbush expects "hardcore" gamers to continue to prefer packaged titles. Recent NPD data makes this clear, says Wedbush, which expects industry-wide sales to rebound in the fall. GameStop (GME) can only hope the firm is right. (earlier) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 20, 2012, 9:49 AM Two House members introduce legislation that would force video game makers to include a warning label that reads, "exposure to violent video games has been linked to aggressive behavior." Under the proposed law, only early childhood games would be excluded from the requirement. In the line of fire: ATVI, ERTS, THQI, TTWO. 4 Comments [Tech, U.S. Economy]
- Thursday, March 8, 2012, 7:04 PM NPD estimates U.S. retail video game industry sales fell 24% Y/Y in February. That's not a pretty figure, but is better than January's 34% decline. Software sales fell 23% Y/Y, and hardware sales fell 18%. However, hardware sales rose 62% from January levels if one excludes 4 days of PlayStation Vita (SNE) sales, and rose 87% if one doesn't. The Xbox 360 (MSFT) was once again the top-selling console. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 10:36 AM THQ (THQI +2.8%) shares rally following a WSJ article discussing a potential recovery, as the maker of video games and accessories pins its hopes on a turnaround plan after its unsuccessful uDraw tablet and other strategic missteps. "They can't make another mistake," a Wedbush analyst says. "If they turn left instead of right, they'll run out of cash." Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 10, 2012, 9:29 AM U.S. retail video game hardware and software sales each fell 38% Y/Y in January, claims NPD, an ugly showing even after accounting for the ages of the major consoles, and likely further evidence of the impact made by mobile and social gaming. In December, the Y/Y declines were only 28% and 14%, respectively. The Xbox 360 (MSFT) was again the top-selling home console; its 270K shipments gave it a 49% share. GME -2.3%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 3, 2012, 1:51 PM It's been a game-changing day for THQ (THQI) after shedding 23.3% following a weak FQ3 report. Earlier in the day, a Brean Murray analyst said the firm faced a liquidity crisis and would need to tap a credit line or boost sales. That call was answered later in the day with word that THQ signed a strategic agreement with Innovative Leisures to publish titles starting this year. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 2, 2012, 5:34 PM THQ (THQI) drops 22.4% AH after reporting FQ3 revenue of $404.4M (+25% Y/Y) and EPS of $0.35, badly missing a consensus of $417.6M and $0.65 in spite of a major warning in December. THQ, whose survival is increasingly being questioned, also says it's halting development of kids' console games, and plans to stop making its poor-selling uDraw tablet. THQ claims these actions will cut annual expenses by $160M. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, January 30, 2012, 6:58 PM S&P announces some changes to its indexes: Post Holdings (POST, when issued) is replacing Comstock Resources (CRK) in the S&P MidCap 400 index, and Comstock will replace THQ (THQI) in the S&P SmallCap 600 index effective at the close of trading on Friday, Feb. 3. Ralcorp (RAH) is spinning off Post, which is expected to be completed on or about that date, pending final approvals. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 2:32 PM THQ (THQI -5.3%) shares swoon after the videogame publisher updates its business strategy by exiting traditional kids' licensed games and focus on core franchises. THQ has made games in the past under license agreements with Disney and Nickelodeon that included properties such as "SpongeBob Squarepants" and "Cars." Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 13, 2012, 10:03 AM GameStop (GME -2.3%) heads lower after NPD reports U.S. retail sales of video game hardware and software fell 28% and 14% Y/Y, respectively, in December. For all of 2011, hardware sales fell 11%, and software sales 6%, as online and mobile gaming took their toll, and the current generation of consoles showed its age. The Xbox 360 (MSFT) was easily the best-performing console, accounting for 49% of 2011 retail console spending. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 15, 2011, 5:07 PM THQ (THQI) discloses in an 8-K it has fired Martin J. Good, the VP in charge of its Kids, Family, Casual division. Good's business was responsible for THQ's uDraw graphics tablet, whose weak sales were responsible for the game developer's massive FQ3 warning. Comment! [Tech]
