    U.S. auto sales for Q1 are expected to come in at four-year highs after the U.S. economy improved and financing terms eased up a bit. A survey of analysts sees March sales of 14.75M vehicles - below February's mark of 15.1M but still 10.9% higher than sales from a year ago. Industry watchers say automakers have hit the "sweet spot" with lowered incentives and double-digit sales increases pointing to improved profits.

    Apple (AAPL) received top marks from Japanese consumers in a brand evaluation survey - that's up from 11th place last year, and an impressive accomplishment given the extent the Japanese electronics market has been historically dominated by local brands. Apple, which also placed second in a survey of Japanese businesspeople (behind TM), still doesn't have a deal to sell the iPhone via top Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo (DCM).

    Toyota (TM +0.7%) says sales of its new Prius hybrid are strong, with over 1.2K vehicles sold in the model's first 3 days on the market. Data from industry watcher seems to support the claim with the revelation that the car is the third most considered vehicle in the subcompact segment.

    The average fuel economy of new cars sold in the U.S. in February is up 18% from 2007 levels, estimates the University of Michigan. That leaves Bill Gross excited about the future gains electrics and hybrids could produce, though it looks as if sales of more fuel-efficient conventional cars have much to do with recent advances.

    Toyota (TM) is recalling over 681K U.S. cars and trucks due to potential problems. The vehicles include 495K Tacoma pickups that need to have a steering wheel part replaced, and 186.5K Camry and Venza units that need new stop lamp switches. (previously)

    Toyota (TM) models represent half of the top picks by vehicle category in the latest annual car ratings from Consumer Reports, led by its redesigned Camry hybrid and Highlander SUV. Honda (HMC), which had been the top overall automaker the past four years, dropped to fourth place. GM and Chrysler are "building nicer cars" with each redesign, but Ford (F) fell to 10th.

    Though gas prices are shooting higher, U.S. demand for hybrid cars is declining, as consumer opt for traditional cars that can promise similar gas mileage at a lower price. Hybrids accounted for just 2.2% of U.S. auto sales last year, down from 2.8% in 2009. Meanwhile, demand for fuel-efficient traditional cars such as the Chevy Cruze (GM) and Ford's (F) Fiesta and Focus is surging. (yesterday)

    Chinese automakers surge after the government excludes foreign brands from a preliminary list of vehicles approved for purchase by state agencies. The move will help local brands gain in the 80B yuan ($12.7B) market at the expense of foreign automakers like GM (GM) and Toyota (TM). In the past, overseas brands accounted for 80% of the official pool.

    Japanese shares shoot 2% higher right out of the gate this morning, with the Nikkei Average rising to 9,424 in the first five minutes of trading. Strong U.S. economic data and stock gains overnight help boost Japanese exporters: Toyota (TM +2%), Nissan(NSANY.PK +3%), Mazda (MZDAF.PK +5.6%), Sony (SNE +3%), Panasonic (PC +3%), and Advantest(ATE +3%).

    Japanese stocks open lower, tracking losses in U.S. markets overnight. The Nikkei Averagei is currently down -0.3% to 9,233. Car markers and Shipbuilders lead declines: Toyota (TM -1.2%), Mitsubishi Motors (MMTOY.PK -1%), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MSLOY.PK -1.9%) and Nippon Yusen (NPNYY.PK -2.4%).

    Toyota (TM +3.2%) led automakers with the fewest problems reported by owners of three-year-old cars, while Ford (F) and GM brands ranked among the most improved, according to J.D. Power's dependability survey. Toyota’s Lexus brand topped the industry, and the automaker had the most models lead their respective segments for the seventh straight year.
