- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 10:04 AM MetroPCS (PCS +15.3%) and Leap Wireless (LEAP +15.1%) shoot higher after Bloomberg reports Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY.PK), parent of T-Mobile USA, is close to a deal for MetroPCS, long the subject of M&A speculation. Sprint (S -6.9%) and Clearwire (CLWR -4.1%) are selling off. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Friday, September 28, 2012, 11:58 AM MetroPCS (PCS -1.6%) is "holding conversations with a number of strategic suitors," a source tells the FT, while cautioning the talks shouldn't be viewed as negotiations at this point. Shares are nonetheless trading lower, likely because M&A rumors (I, II) surrounding MetroPCS and fellow discount carrier Leap Wireless (LEAP -0.7%) are nothing new. Sprint (S), which reportedly came close to buying MetroPCS earlier this year, is said to be "not fully engaged" in conversations. 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 7:36 AM With Sprint (S) showing signs of improvement, analysts think the company could expand its customer base by acquiring a smaller rival such as T-Mobile (DTEGY.PK), MetroPCS (PCS) or Leap Wireless (LEAP) to create a strong no. 3 carrier to challenge AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ). The stock's 136% YTD gain bolsters its currency for a deal. 3 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 5:08 PM Some of Wells Fargo's notes on Sprint (S +7.1%) CEO Dan Hesse's remarks: 1) Sprint expects to take part in industry consolidation because it "views itself as sub-scale" (compared with AT&T/Verizon, no doubt). 2) Hesse thinks it doesn't make sense for Sprint to raise prices while it has an LTE coverage disadvantage. 3) The recent jump in Sprint's Nextel retention rate is unlikely to last. 4) Smartphone sales are expected to continue lifting ARPU. CLWR +13%. PCS +5.2%. LEAP +1.7%. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 2:45 PM Sprint (S +7%) and Clearwire (CLWR +8.3%) jump after the Street takes kindly to Sprint CEO Dan Hesse's Goldman conference remarks. Hesse forecasts "significant consolidation" will hit the U.S. mobile industry (previous); claims the carrier has doubled its retention rate for defecting Nextel subs as it prepares to shut down Nextel's network; and suggests Sprint is open to making spectrum purchases. M&A targets Leap Wireless (LEAP +2.5%) and MetroPCS (PCS +3.9%) are also higher. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, September 14, 2012, 2:09 PM FCC docs turned up two more 4G spectrum bands - the 800 MHz. and 1900 MHz. bands - in the North American GSM version of the iPhone 5 (previous) on top of the ones named by Apple. Their inclusion suggests spectrum-hungry AT&T (T) plans to launch 4G LTE services in those bands in addition to the ones it has promised to support. That, in turn, could be a sign Ma Bell is looking to ramp its 4G capex and/or acquire companies owning spectrum in those bands - could PCS or LEAP be targets? 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 2:10 PM Don't bet on a Sprint/T-Mobile merger happening, says Goldman. The combined company would own $35B in high-yield debt, the firm points out, and Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY.PK) might not be crazy about a deal that would face regulatory scrutiny and have a major equity component to it (ed: another hurdle is that the carriers run incompatible 3G networks). The firm thinks a Sprint (S) bid for MetroPCS (PCS - previous) or Leap Wireless (LEAP) is more logical. (Sprint CEO remarks) 7 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 9:48 AM RadioShack (RSH) and Leap Wireless (LEAP) unveil their long-rumored (I, II) prepaid mobile service. The service, which will rely on the RadioShack brand and initially feature two Huawei phones, offers 1,000 minutes for $35/month, and unlimited voice and 1GB of data for $50/month. MetroPCS (PCS) recently cut the price of its unlimited prepaid plan to $55/month. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 5:18 PM Sprint's (S) marketing department continues promoting the carrier's cost advantage relative to AT&T and Verizon. Having long taken aim at Ma Bell and Big Red's data caps, Sprint's latest ad (video) skewers their expensive shared data plans. Sprint's Q2 subscriber data suggests its marketing efforts are starting to bear fruit, but it now has to contend with T-Mobile's revival of its unlimited data plan, and a price cut from MetroPCS. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 1:47 PM Ahead of an auction for spectrum owned by TV broadcasters, the FCC is planning to review its rules for determining if a carrier owns too much spectrum. The FCC helped derail the AT&T/T-Mobile merger partly because of spectrum concerns, and also required major concessions from Verizon to approve its spectrum purchases from cable providers. AT&T is (officially, at least) praising the news, but so are smaller carriers such as Sprint (S), who argue current rules don't differentiate between bands. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 6:45 PM MetroPCS (PCS -4.3%) President Thomas Keys shoots down speculation of a merger with prepaid rival Leap Wireless (LEAP -8.1%) in a CNET interview, arguing the companies' spectrum constraints makes a deal illogical for now. He adds a partnership with Dish Network (DISH) or Clearwire (CLWR), who could be partnering with each other, might help address MetroPCS' spectrum needs. (earlier) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 11:29 AM MetroPCS (PCS -5.2%) and Leap Wireless (LEAP -3.5%) slide after T-Mobile decides to revive its unlimited data plans. Sprint (S -1.5%) is off slightly. Low-end carriers have clearly decided to challenge market leaders AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) on price, hoping the latter's de facto price hikes will leave them vulnerable. Will the AT&T/Verizon "duopoly" continue gaining share, or are their latest pricing moves an act of hubris that will backfire? 12 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 6:00 AM In a direct challenge to Sprint (S), T-Mobile USA (DTEGY.PK) plans to offer a new unlimited data service for a monthly fee that will allow subscribers unlimited data usage without any curb on their download speeds. The move comes as T-Mobile loses customers, and a day after MetroPCS (PCS) slashed the price of a similar service. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 12:54 PM Looking to stem subscriber losses to bigger carriers, MetroPCS (PCS +1.7%) has cut the price of its unlimited 4G voice/text/data plan to $55/month from a prior $70/month. A $50/month plan offering 2.5GB/month of data remains unchanged. Sprint's (S) efforts to promote unlimited data have begun paying off a little, and AT&T (T) and Verizon's (VZ) embrace of expensive shared data plans could give rivals more room to attack on price. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, August 16, 2012, 6:20 PM Verizon CFO Fran Shammo predicts his company will continue to see postpaid subscriber adds accelerate in Q3 and seasonally strong Q4 - Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) reported 880K postpaid net adds in Q2, well above a 660K consensus, and Q1's 501K. Shammo also claims Verizon has "found a niche" in the prepaid market with its $50/month Unleashed plans, though (in-line with Verizon's general strategy) the company doesn't plan on matching price cuts from PCS and LEAP. (earlier) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, August 10, 2012, 3:57 PM Leap Wireless (LEAP +9.8%), crushed on Tuesday thanks to a poor Q2 report, is rallying for the second day in a row. Today's culprit is a Bloomberg column speculating on M&A interest, given recent management comments suggesting a willingness to sell. The column notes a Pivotal Research analyst estimates Leap's spectrum and operations could be worth $16/share to a buyer. 45% of Leap's float was shorted as of July 13. MetroPCS (PCS +2.2%) has also been the subject of M&A rumors. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
