Saturday, April 27, 11:03 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). Tuesday, April 23, 10:50 AM A rising Veeco lifts all LED boats: Cree (CREE +3.2%) and Rubicon (RBCN +7.2%) are joining Aixtron and GT Advanced in benefiting from Veeco's Q1 bookings figures and relatively upbeat Q2 commentary, which comes just a week after LED names were hit hard by a Digitimes report about MOCVD equipment price cuts. Cree is making new 52-week highs, while Rubicon remains 43% below its 52-week high. The sensor, whose capabilities resemble those of the hyped Lytro point-and-shoot camera, relies on 500K microscopic lenses capturing slightly different images from each other, and software that pieces together the captured images. Friday, December 14, 2012, 6:57 PM As Cypress Semi (CY) digests Ramtron, developer of a memory technology (FRAM) long promised to be huge some day, its core SRAM business could face a threat from MRAM, another memory solution that for years has been long on hype and short on actual use. Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) says it has developed an MRAM prototype that consumes far less power than SRAM thanks to lower current leakage, making it ideal for mobile devices. Friday, December 14, 2012, 11:53 AM Micron (MU +2.6%) is trekking higher after receiving an upgrade to Buy from Drexel Hamilton, which cites improving DRAM spot memory prices. Digitimes is out with another column today (previous) reporting of a spot price rebound: it notes DRAMeXchange believes the spot price for 2Gb DDR3 PC chips has risen 14.6% this month, as capacity is shifted to server and (especially) mobile DRAM. Laptops and tablets with folding, sliding or detachable keyboards need to be able to survive much twisting, turning and poking. Monday, October 8, 2012, 7:17 PM Goldman doesn't see NAND flash memory vendors making "meaningful capacity additions" through mid-2013, even though Samsung (SSNLF.PK), Hynix, and Toshiba have all cut supply lately. Demand growth, meanwhile, is holding steady, and could see upside if cheaper solid-state drives (courtesy of low-cost chips from Samsung) are rapidly adopted. Thursday, September 20, 2012, 6:33 PM The world's 4 biggest NAND flash memory suppliers - SanDisk (SNDK), Samsung (SSNLF.PK), Toshiba, and SK Hynix - are reportedly planning to hike prices by 10%-15% by mid-November thanks to surging smartphone demand. Apple (AAPL) is said to be an especially voracious NAND buyer, fully booking SanDisk and Hynix's spare capacity as it shifts orders away from Samsung. Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 4:45 PM Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) is placing orders for 100MW of SunPower (SPWR) solar panels meant for the Japanese market, as the companies extend their partnership for another 3 years. The orders will come in top of 70MW of shipments that have been made by SunPower to Toshiba since the companies linked up in 2010. However, Samsung remains the only manufacturer of Apple-designed microchips for the handset, as well as for the iPad.
