Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). More on MEMC: The Nikkei reports MEMC's SunEdison unit and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) have landed deals to build Japanese solar plants, with SunEdison selling the power generated by the facilities. Toshiba is said to be in talks to build 4 or 5 "megasolar" plants. The Japanese government launched an aggressive solar subsidy program last year.

After declining 7% last year thanks to nosediving prices, NAND flash memory sales will grow 14% this year to $22.4B, IHS predicts. Cautious investment plans from top suppliers such as SanDisk (SNDK), Micron (MU), Samsung (SSNLF.PK), and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) have already fueled hopes of a better pricing environment. Unsurprisingly, IHS sees smartphone, tablet, and SSD sales driving 2013 growth - the firm estimates the iPhone single-handedly accounted for 10.5% of 2012 NAND consumption, and all other smartphones 10.4%. More on new Sony (SNE) PlayStation: The next PS is likely to include chips from AMD (AMD) as opposed to the "Cell chip" technology developed by IBM (IBM) and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) that is used in the PS3, raising compatibility fears for existing games. Sony may also be ending its partnership with Nvidia (NVDA), the supplier of the graphics chip.

Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) has developed an image sensor for mobile devices that allows users to re-focus an image after it has been taken. The sensor, whose capabilities resemble those of the hyped Lytro point-and-shoot camera, relies on 500K microscopic lenses capturing slightly different images from each other, and software that pieces together the captured images. It amounts to fresh competition for OmniVision (OVTI) and Sony (SNE).

As Cypress Semi (CY) digests Ramtron, developer of a memory technology (FRAM) long promised to be huge some day, its core SRAM business could face a threat from MRAM, another memory solution that for years has been long on hype and short on actual use. Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) says it has developed an MRAM prototype that consumes far less power than SRAM thanks to lower current leakage, making it ideal for mobile devices. Historically, MRAM has been more power-hungry than SRAM.

Micron (MU +2.6%) is trekking higher after receiving an upgrade to Buy from Drexel Hamilton, which cites improving DRAM spot memory prices. Digitimes is out with another column today (previous) reporting of a spot price rebound: it notes DRAMeXchange believes the spot price for 2Gb DDR3 PC chips has risen 14.6% this month, as capacity is shifted to server and (especially) mobile DRAM. Micron's gains come even though many Apple suppliers are off - Micron is about to become an iPhone supplier through the Elpida deal.

The success of Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows 8 touch operating system depends as much as anything on components that cost under $10: hinges. Laptops and tablets with folding, sliding or detachable keyboards need to be able to survive much twisting, turning and poking. Toshiba has six engineers working just on hinges, H-P (HPQ) spent three months perfecting a new laptop with a detachable screen, and Lenovo built a machine that opened and closed computers a mere 25,000 times.

Monday, October 8, 2012, 7:17 PMGoldman doesn't see NAND flash memory vendors making "meaningful capacity additions" through mid-2013, even though Samsung (SSNLF.PK), Hynix, and Toshiba have all cut supply lately. Demand growth, meanwhile, is holding steady, and could see upside if cheaper solid-state drives (courtesy of low-cost chips from Samsung) are rapidly adopted. This leads the firm to lift its target on SanDisk (SNDK) to $52 from $45. Micron (MU) also benefits from a favorable supply/demand balance. (price hikes)

The world's 4 biggest NAND flash memory suppliers - SanDisk (SNDK), Samsung (SSNLF.PK), Toshiba, and SK Hynix - are reportedly planning to hike prices by 10%-15% by mid-November thanks to surging smartphone demand. Apple (AAPL) is said to be an especially voracious NAND buyer, fully booking SanDisk and Hynix's spare capacity as it shifts orders away from Samsung. SanDisk and Micron (MU) rallied yesterday on hopes of a favorable NAND supply/demand balance. (IDC tablet forecast)

Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) is placing orders for 100MW of SunPower (SPWR) solar panels meant for the Japanese market, as the companies extend their partnership for another 3 years. The orders will come in top of 70MW of shipments that have been made by SunPower to Toshiba since the companies linked up in 2010. The Japanese government announced a new round of solar subsidies in June. (PR)

However, Samsung remains the only manufacturer of Apple-designed microchips for the handset, as well as for the iPad. Apple's DRAM and NAND bookings from the Korean giant had been falling before the latest move.
