- Wednesday, February 13, 12:51 PM Russia's Vladimir Putin gives the clearest indication yet that he is willing to put an end to Gazprom's monopoly on natural gas exports by allowing rival companies to ship liquefied natural gas abroad. Ending the monopoly on exports would be a blow to Gazprom, already under pressure from increasing competition from domestic rivals in the Russian market and European firms. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, February 13, 11:52 AM Australia's Queensland state gives the green light for commercial shale oil projects, aiming to tap reserves estimated at more than 20B barrels. Amid the buzz around Australia's vast offshore gas fields and unconventional resources, international oil majors have been planting flags in parts of central Australia where the geology is similar to the U.S. Eagle Ford and Horn River regions. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, February 13, 3:20 AM Total (TOT): Q4 net profit excluding changes inventories +13% to €3.08B vs consensus of €3B, EPS +3% to €1.05 and revenue +5% to €49.89B, with earnings boosted by higher refining margins and crude prices. Production -4%to 2.29M barrels of oil equivalent a day, due to a shutdown at the Elgin platform in the North Sea and flooding in Nigeria. Expects output to rise 2-3% in 2013, to sell $9B worth of assets. Proposes 2012 dividend of 2.34/share. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Dividends]
- Tuesday, February 12, 10:07 AM Deliveries of natural gas to Europe from the Shah Deniz 2 field in Azerbaijan will begin in 2019, according to a state energy official. Gas from Shah Deniz 2 will be transported to Europe via Turkey, where it will link up with either the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline or Nabucco-West; the partners, including BP, STO and TOT alongside Socar, still must decide between the two pipelines. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, February 6, 11:33 AM Cyprus signs a deal with Total (TOT) to search for offshore oil and gas - already its agreement with an energy major this year - hoping for an energy windfall from the largely untapped eastern Mediterranean that could negate the country's need for an austerity program. But any finds are not expected to come ashore until 2018 at the earliest for domestic consumption, and 2019 for export. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, February 5, 3:19 PM Total (TOT +1.2%) is locked in discussions with a group of companies including Électricité de France for the sale of gas asset TGIF for ~€2.4B ($3.26B). TGIF manages a network of ~5K km of pipeline which carries 13% of the total volume of gas transported in France, and operates 22% of the country’s gas storage capacity. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, February 1, 9:54 AM Fines amounting to $8B sought by Nigeria from Shell (RDS.A) and Chevron (CVX) for oil spills are not backed by law, according to the chairman of the country’s Senate Committee on Environment. That doesn't mean laws won't be changed, but observers say tough measures are unlikely to be enforced against companies engaged in partnerships with the government. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, January 30, 5:47 PM Investors took profits in Gevo (GEVO -2.1%) today after yesterday's 17% spike on speculation the biofuels producer backed by Total (TOT) is preparing to switch back to isobutanol production at its Minnesota plant. Shares have shed 34% since announcing in September that it stopped processing corn into isobutanol to adjust its manufacturing process. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, January 30, 12:24 PM Suncor (SU) is crying foul over transportation fees proposed by Kinder Morgan (KMP, KMI) for the expansion of its Trans Mountain pipeline, contending the latter is leveraging its position as the owner of the only Pacific outlet for Alberta’s landlocked oil to ratchet up tolls “to earn excessive and unreasonable rates of return.” Of the 13 firms contracted for capacity, only SU and Total (TOT) have formally complained. 14 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, January 24, 11:24 AM Total (TOT +0.6%) hopes to restart the Elgin gas field in the North Sea "in the coming days or weeks," CEO Christophe de Margerie says. Production was halted last March after a major gas leak forced an evacuation. Before the incident, Elgin produced ~130K boe/day, and restoration of its output is crucial for TOT's production targets. 2 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, January 23, 2:33 PM The partners in Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz 2 gas field - including BP, STO and TOT - will make a final investment decision on the project in 2013 and choose between two pipelines vying to carry gas to Europe. The gas will be transported via Turkey, where it will link up with either the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline or Nabucco West. Deliveries are expected to start in 2018, a year later than previously planned. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, January 18, 9:01 AM Total (TOT) is set to retain a major oil license in Uganda's oil-rich Lake Albertine Rift basin after striking a new oil discovery following months of extensive drilling. The development is a major boost for the prospects of TOT's operations in Uganda, where the exploration license for the 1A block where the discovery was made was due to expire next month. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, January 15, 6:21 PM Statoil (STO) was the biggest winner in Norway's energy auction today, receiving 14 licenses including seven operatorships spread across the North, Norwegian and Barents seas. Shell (RDS.A) and Total (TOT) received the most operatorships among non-Norwegian firms, with four each; they received five and eight licenses, respectively. XOM, CVX and COP also picked off a few licenses. 3 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, January 15, 2:51 PM Two consortia led by French power group Electricite de France and financial firm Caisse des Depots are the two final bidders for Total's (TOT) gas storage unit TIGF, WSJ reports. TIGF was put up for sale by TOT last fall as part of a strategy to sell as much as €20B ($26.7B) in assets by 2015 to help boost cash flow and finance major investments; TIGF is valued at €2.5B-€3B. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 10, 10:59 AM The Shah Deniz II consortium of companies - including BP, STO and TOT - leading the development of a giant natural gas field in Azerbaijan agrees to fund development of Nabucco West, one of two pipeline projects competing to carry the gas to Europe. The parties also agree that Shah Deniz would get a 50% stake in Nabucco if the project is selected to carry the gas to Europe. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 10, 10:46 AM Total (TOT +1.4%) will halt making new investment in dry shale gas in the U.S. while gas prices remain low, CEO Christophe de Margerie says, potentially placing at risk its ventures with Chesapeake (CHK -3.5%) in the Utica and Barnett shale areas. TOT plans to continue to invest in countries it considers more promising in shale, such as Denmark, where it intends to spud a shale exploration well this year. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
