- Saturday, May 18, 8:25 AM Refining Canada’s oil sands produces petroleum coke, called "the dirtiest residue from the dirtiest oil on earth." It's piling up along the Detroit River, NYT reports, thanks to a Marathon Petroleum refinery that began refining Canadian oil sands in November. Detroit’s pile will not be the only one. Canada’s efforts to sell more products from oil sands to the U.S., which include transporting it through the proposed Keystone pipeline, are pulling more coking south to U.S. refineries, creating more waste product. 20 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, May 16, 5:42 PM Canadian PM Stephen Harper lobbied for approval of the Keystone XL pipeline to the U.S. today, citing Canada's environmental credentials and saying arguments for the project are "overwhelmingly on the side of approval." By making the pitch himself, Harper ratchets up the level of government lobbying over the pipeline. Harper’s advocacy “helps cut through the noise and misinformation," TransCanada (TRP) says. 4 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, May 16, 8:28 AM TransCanada (TRP) plans to sell down its stake in two natural gas pipelines to affiliated company TC PipeLines (TCP) in a ~$1B deal including debt, which it says will free up funds for capital investments. TCP -2.8% premarket after saying it would sell 7.7M units in an effort to raise funds for the acquisition. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 14, 6:25 PM Buried in the IEA report about booming North American output is a warning for Canada: If the Keystone XL pipeline (TRP) isn’t built, prices for Alberta-sourced bitumen likely would remain depressed, investments to expand production could be deferred, and loading crude onto rail cars isn't a long-term solution to ease the bottleneck. The report goads officials in Edmonton and Ottawa to do more to promote the pipeline. 2 Comments [Energy]
- Tuesday, May 14, 9:55 AM Gas distributors in eastern Canada are crying foul over service changes proposed by TransCanada (TRP) to its cross-country natural gas mainline that would limit shippers’ ability to renew delivery contracts. TRP says it needs longer-term commitments to plan for new infrastructure development, including converting portions of the mainline to carry oil. 1 Comment [Energy]
- Monday, May 13, 6:35 PM A rejection of the Keystone pipeline (TRP) would unleash shock waves through the halls of policymakers in Canada and the U.S. and force producers to find creative solutions. But don't hold your breath: The Obama administration is unlikely to make a decision until late this year or even early 2014, unnamed U.S. officials are telling Reuters. 9 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, May 2, 9:56 AM TransCanada (TRP -0.6%) says it will proceed with a 125-mile pipeline and terminal facility in Alberta at a combined cost of ~C$900M. TRP says the pipeline could ultimately transport up to 900K bbl/day of crude oil, and the terminal is expected to have storage capacity for up to 1.9M barrels. The projects are expected to come into service during H2 2015. Comment! [Energy]
- Friday, April 26, 9:37 AM More from TransCanada's (TRP) Q1 results: Return to service of units of the Bruce nuclear power plant was the main driver of Q1's increased profit. Says it now expects the Keystone XL pipeline to be in service in H2 2015 and expects its $5.3B cost estimate for the project to increase. Shares open -1%. Comment! [Energy]
- Friday, April 26, 8:42 AM TransCanada (TRP): Q1 EPS of C$0.52 misses by C$0.02. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Thursday, April 25, 4:58 PM Canada's latest Keystone headache is a labor dispute between the government and its diplomats that could hinder efforts to lobby the U.S. for approval of the pipeline (TRP). Federal diplomats are working no more than the 7.5 hours/day required by their contracts and not answering e-mails or phone calls after 5 p.m., the head of the foreign-service workers’ union says. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, April 24, 3:59 PM Canada continues to turn up the heat on the Obama administration, as natural resources minister Joe Oliver says a U.S. rejection of the proposed Keystone (TRP) pipeline “would represent a serious reversal in our long-standing energy relationship.” On environmental objections, Oliver says Keystone crude would displace Venezuelan and other heavy oil and "not increase greenhouse gas emissions at all.” 5 Comments [Energy]
- Monday, April 22, 10:46 AM TransCanada’s (TRP -0.4%) Keystone XL pipeline enjoys backing from a majority of Canadians and Americans polled by Ottawa-based Nanos Research in conjunction with a D.C.-based think tank. Respondents suggest securing a stable energy supply for North America should be a bigger priority than reducing carbon emissions. 3 Comments [Energy]
- Tuesday, April 16, 12:19 PM The Keystone XL (TRP) pipeline would increase greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 46 coal-fired power plants or 34M vehicles, groups fighting the project claim in a report. The finding, at odds with the environmental review by the State Department, says the project to carry ~830K bbl/day of Canadian tar sands oil would add 181M metric tons of gases tied to global warming. 22 Comments [Energy]
- Monday, April 8, 6:27 PM Alberta province steps up efforts to promote the Keystone (TRP) pipeline project, sending its premier to the U.S. to meet legislators and hiring two U.S. PR firms with ties to Sec. of State John Kerry. Meanwhile, environmental groups ask the Obama administration to extend the approval process for Keystone, using the recent spill of heavy Canadian crude in Arkansas as the latest reason for a delay. 5 Comments [Energy]
