- Tuesday, May 21, 8:07 AM Keep an eye on property casualty insurers (TRV, ALL, CB, AIG) after all posted notable declines amid the Oklahoma City tornado disaster yesterday. The dip following Sandy proved a great buying opportunity (though from much lower levels). 2 Comments [Financials]
- Tuesday, May 7, 3:56 PM More on Goldman's AIG downgrade (earlier): Better bets are Travelers (TRV) and Allstate (ALL) - like AIG, set to benefit from improving insurance margins, but also able to return capital without the regulatory risk. Prudential (PRU) and MetLife (MET) might also be better ideas - like AIG, they do face regulatory risk over capital returns, but both have more muted expectations and trade at lower valuations. 3 Comments [Financials]
- Wednesday, April 24, 9:11 AM Travelers (TRV) notches a couple of upgrades after earnings yesterday, with Bernstein expecting the stock to hit new highs this year, and Goldman reiterating its Buy and raising the price target to $96. Bernstein's Josh Stirling was clearly impressed with the quarter (CC transcript) and CEO Jay Fishman - responding to a question of his - says momentum in premium increases will continue thanks to unpredictable weather and low interest rates cutting returns on Travelers' investment income. Comment! [Financials]
- Tuesday, April 23, 7:47 AM More on Travelers (TRV) Q1 earnings: Combined ratio falls (a good thing) to 88.5 from 92.2 thanks to better rates (up 3.8%) and lower catastrophe losses (off 1.3%). Book value/share of $68, up 7% Y/Y. Repurchased $300M worth of stock during quarter. Quarterly dividend hiked 9% to $0.50. Shares +4.2% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Financials, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 23, 7:00 AM Travelers (TRV): Q1 EPS of $2.31 beats by $0.28. Revenue of $6.33B beats by $0.71B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Financials]

- Tuesday, March 26, 8:11 AM Up nicely since Hurricane Sandy, the insurers have further to run, says Credit Suisse's Michael Zaremski, as the industry - realizing it can't make money off the float with interest rates so low - is successfully pushing through premium increases. ACE, TRV, and ALL should all continue to benefit. Comment! [Financials]
- Tuesday, January 22, 7:42 AM More on Travelers (TRV) Q4 earnings: GAAP Combined ratio jumps to 105.4 from 95.9 a year ago thanks to Sandy. Underlying combined ratio improves to 92.8 from 97, thanks to better underwriting margins. Net written premiums up 2% Y/Y. Book value/share of $67.31, up 8% Y/Y. "We are very encouraged by pricing trends across all 3 business segments." Shares +2.8% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Financials]
- Tuesday, January 22, 7:05 AM Travelers (TRV): Q4 EPS of $0.72 beats by $0.6. Revenue of $6.47B (+2% Y/Y) beats by $1.13B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Financials]

- Monday, December 17, 2012, 10:40 AM Insurers could face $11B more in asbestos-related claims than the $23B they currently have set aside, says A.M. Best. It's not enough to cripple the industry (Sandy claims are about $22B), but investors have sold in the past when companies have announced additions to reserves. Those maybe touched: HIG and TRV, and also BRK.B, which has taken on billions in exposure through reinsurance deals. Comment! [Financials]
- Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 10:38 AM Travelers (TRV +2.9%) estimates net losses from Sandy to be about $650M. The total loss is $1.135B, but reinsurance recoveries and tax savings will narrow it. The net tab is far less than Allstate's (ALL) $1.08B estimate, even though the companies have about the same market share in the affected areas. Will Allstate revise its numbers lower? Comment! [Financials]
- Friday, November 9, 2012, 2:56 PM Chubb (CB) halts its share repurchase program as it is unable to estimate losses from Hurricane Sandy. The company is ranked 5th among insurers for homeowner and commercial insurance exposure in the storm-affected states. Numbers 2 and 3 - Allstate (ALL) and Travelers (TRV) - haven't yet commented on their plans (numbers 1 and 4 aren't publicly traded). Comment! [Financials]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 10:26 AM Hurricane Sandy caused as much as $20B in insured losses and $50B in economic losses, says disaster-modeling firm Eqecat, more than doubling the estimate the company made 2 days ago. 5 Comments [Financials, U.S. Economy]
