- Monday, May 20, 10:45 AM JA Solar (JASO +34.4%) is now skying higher following its Q1 beat and full-year shipment guidance reiteration, and is providing fresh fuel for the colossal solar stock rally that started last fall (TAN +4.4%). TSL +13.3%. DQ +20%. LDK +9.9%. JKS +10.3%. SCTY +11.6%. SOL +9.4%. CSUN +8.9%. SPWR +4.9%. ASTI +9.4%. YGE +8.4%. CSIQ +6.6%. The fact 38% of JA's Q1 module shipments went to Japan (a market with higher ASPs/margins than China) is likely going over well with investors. 6 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, May 15, 9:17 AM SunPower (SPWR) +7.5% after providing strong guidance ahead of today's analyst day, which starts at 10AM ET (webcast). SunPower expects Q2 revenue of $550M-$600M and EPS of $005-$0.15, above a consensus of $513.3M and -$0.02. 2013 guidance (possibly conservative) is for revenue of $2.5B-$2.6B and EPS of $0.60-$0.80 vs. a consensus of $2.55B and $0.64. Gross margin is expected to fall to 14%-16% in Q2 from Q1's 22.7%, and total 15%-17% in 2013. 2013 free cash flow of $100M-$200 is expected. Shares now +57% since SunPower posted a huge Q1 beat on May 2. FSLR +2.5%. WFR +1.9%. LDK +1.5%. TSL +3.5%. SOL +2.7%. (slides) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Tuesday, April 9, 1:41 PM First Solar (FSLR +23.8%) guides on its analyst day for 2013 revenue of $3.8B-$4B and EPS of $4-$4.50, far above a consensus of $3.15B and $3.46. Shares have spiked higher on the news, and were shortly halted due to volatility. Other solar names are also surging: SPWR +9.8%. TSL +8.7%. DQ +12.3%. STP +36.1%. LDK +15%. JKS +15.4%. WFR +7.5%. JASO +6.6%. (previous) Update (1:56): First Solar shares are now up 48.2%, and have been halted again. CNNMoney's Paul R. La Monica notes over 1/3 of the float is shorted. "Can you say squeeze?" 9 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Wednesday, February 27, 11:40 AM Unsurprisingly, solar stocks are giving back some of their big 2013 gains (TAN -3.7%) in response to First Solar's (FSLR -16.1%) Q4 results and guidance. LDK -9.6%. SCTY -7.7%. SPWR -6.2%. YGE -6%. TSL -4.5%. JASO -4.4%. GTAT -2.9%. Piper and Baird have joined BofA in downgrading FSLR. On the earnings call, management said it's targeting a 2013 book-to-bill of at least 1 (it was 0.8 in 2012), but cautioned it expects 2H results to be weaker than 1H results due to upcoming project completions and a greater mix of module sales. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Tuesday, February 26, 10:36 AM Up slightly at the open following a mixed Q4 report, Trina (TSL -8.1%) is now selling off; shares are still up over 2x from their Nov. bottom, but down 21% from their Feb. 14 close. Trina is guiding for Q1 module shipments of 420MW-430MW, up from 415MW in Q4 and 380MW in Q3. 2013 guidance is for module shipments of 2GW-2.1GW, up from 2012's 1.59GW. While Q4 module shipments beat estimates, weak pricing resulted in a gross margin of just 1.9%, though that's better than Q3's 0.8%. Opex -19% Y/Y, but still up as a % of revenue. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 26, 7:30 AM Trina Solar (TSL): Q4 EPS of -$1.23 misses by $0.43. Revenue of $302.7M beats by $33.66M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]

- Friday, February 22, 11:59 AM Yingli (YGE +3%) pre-announces a better-than-expected Q4: the company says it will report a ~40% Q/Q increase in solar module shipments on March 4, well above prior guidance for a "low teen percentage increase." However, gross margin is expected to total -8% to -8.5% thanks to inventory and depreciation charges. Shares are up moderately after ripping higher over the last 3 months along with other solar names. Peers are also up: TSL +4.1%. JKS +4.5%. CSIQ +3.5%. LSK +2.9%. SPWR +4.7%. 3 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, February 8, 10:46 AM Some solar stocks are off after SunPower (SPWR -6.9%) provided light top-line guidance to go with its Q4 beat. FSLR -2.4%. YGE -2%. STP -2%. TSL -1.9%. SunPower's EMEA sales fell 64% Y/Y in Q4, nearly offsetting solid growth in the Americas and Asia-Pac. However, gross margin rose 460 bps Q/Q to 18.6%. Continued margin improvement and an expected 10% drop in opex lead SunPower to predict on its earnings call it will see a "significant increase" in EPS this year. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 10:57 AM Trina Solar (TSL -4.6%) and JinkoSolar (JKS +4%) head in opposite directions following their Q3 reports (I, II). Trina, which warned last week and subsequently plunged, reported a gross margin of just 0.8% (-760 bps Q/Q) and guided for Q4 module shipments of 380MW-400MW (Q3 shipments were 380MW, -9.2% Q/Q). Jinko missed revenue forecasts, but beat EPS estimates thanks to an unexpected 150 bps Q/Q increase in gross margin to 9.9%. Q4 guidance is for module shipments of 250MW-300MW vs. 280MW in Q3. - Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 8:10 AM More on Trina Solar's (TSL) Q2: "Industry overcapacity and demand constraints in newer and traditional PV markets contributed to deflationary pricing pressures." Solar module shipments were 419 MW, gross margin was 8.4%, both in-line. Cuts estimates on module shipments for Q3 to 450-480 MW and the full fiscal year to 1.75-1.8 GW from 2-2.1 GW. TSL -7.8% premarket. 1 Comment [Tech, Energy, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 7:01 AM Trina Solar (TSL): Q2 EPS of -$1.30 misses by $0.51. Revenue of $346.1M (-40.3% Y/Y) misses by $52M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]

DeepValueLover: Solar minus government subsidies = typewriters. Natural gas and coal will be the source of power for electric cars.

TruffelPig: Well, for conventional you always have to buy fuel - day and night. Solar after one investment is basically free. 50% free is still free. -
TruffelPig: To think you now can run everything with nat gas (temporarily cheap) is an illusion. Nuclear is an illusion too and coal is unpopular.

gudla: ok. I still believe in solar companies, even though it might take a bit longer but one day their sun will rise again. -
Michael Bryant: I see consolidation in the solar sector over next 5 yr. Also, it is really the week stocks will perish. The best will do well over 5 yr.
