- Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 8:36 AM Toyota's (TM) new RAV4 electric vehicle catches a positive review from The New York Times that raves about the electric drivetrain from Tesla Motors (TSLA) that turns the utility wagon with its 76 equivalent mpg into a "high-riding 4,032-pound electric beast." If the model helps turn public opinion around on the power of EV engines, the entire industry could get a lift and Tesla Motors could be set for a smooth ride. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 9:50 AM More from Elon Musk (previous): The idealistic Tesla Motors (TSLA +0.5%) CEO says he will consider creating a holding company to own the stock of Tesla and his space exploration firm. It's possible if Musk's shares are diluted in the process that Tesla can stay a bit more centered on a track to profitability, instead of veering toward more and more cutting edge development. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, August 30, 2012, 3:17 PM If Tesla Motors (TSLA -0.2%) can get its ducks in a row - including meeting production deadlines and turning a profit in the affordable electic car segment - expect the automaker to build a "supercar" within 4 or 5 years, according to CEO Elon Musk in a response to a question from a Jalopnik reader. Though it sounds rather dreamy, investors will still want to know if the company plans to perpetually be in development mode. (full Q&A session) 8 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 1:56 PM Tesla Motors (TSLA -1.5%) CEO Elon Musk says that next year it expects to post its first operating profit since the electric-car venture started in 2003. He credits the success to its Model S, a new lower-priced model released in June that sells for $50K - about half the price of Tesla's Roadster. The company plans to build 5K of the new models this year and 20K in 2013, and has already taken reservations for more than 12K. 7 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 1:39 PM Tesla Motors (TSLA +3.4%) bounces back after shares were rattled yesterday on early word that GM was partially pulling the plug on its Chevrolet Volt production. Sentiment today could be influenced by a finalization by the Obama administration on new rules that will require cars and trucks to average 54.5 mpg starting in 2025. If the highly-debated reg sticks it's not a bad thing for Tesla as its Model S already sports a hard to match mix of power and fuel efficiency. The stats: An equivalent mpg rating of 89 and 0-to-60 mph acceleration of 4.4 seconds. 12 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, August 24, 2012, 2:00 PM Forecasting firm LMC Automotive sees U.S. automobile sales hitting their highest selling level in 4.5 years during August. The growth rate should hit double-digits for the 4th consecutive months as dealers clear inventory to make way for 2013 models. Looking forward, an optimistic LMC pegs total light-vehicle sales for 2013 above 15M. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, August 24, 2012, 9:06 AM Capstone is out with a note to clients tipping off that the H2 production target for Tesla Motors (TSLA) is at risk. The EV automaker also catches the critical eye of writer John Peteron today, as he warns TSLA longs that very little short-term upside exists with the stock's Blue Sky-to-Book ratio sitting at a lofty 60. TSLA is inactive premarket, but with a void of any hard-and-fast news on production numbers out there - even wisps of negativity could influence trading. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, August 16, 2012, 10:33 AM Though it's a bit hard to doubt Tesla Motors (TSLA +1.1%) founder Elon Musk's boyish exuberance over the future of his company's role in the electric vehicle market, he also has a nice financial incentive to see all the profound rhetoric actually become a reality. Musk was granted an option to buy 5.27M shares, loaded with an exercise price of $31.17 spread out over a 10-year vesting period. (SEC Form 4) 15 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 11:26 AM Tesla Motors (TSLA -3.3%) CEO Elon Musk concedes the next six months are "crucial" for the automaker as it scales up production to meet expectations. The typically highly-optimistic exec becomes a bit more grounded with his statement that if the company doesn't become cash flow positive it will join the graveyard of car company startups. 23 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 10:15 AM Google continues to move forward with its ambitious self-driving car initiative. In a blog post the company says that select employees will use the cars to commute to work and "take over" if the famed Google algorithm goes awry. The industry as a whole has been keeping an eye on the self-driving concept (I, II), but Google picking the Lexus RX450h for its testing could give Toyota (TM -1.1%) a leg up. 3 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 1:26 PM A number of beat-up momentum stocks run hot after their summer of discontent, with investors apparently setting their tolerance for risk a bit higher without any clear cut impetus. Favored momo names Chipotle (CMG +3.9%), Tesla Motors (TSLA +7.5%), Lululemon (LULU +3.9%), Deckers (DECK +6.2%), and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR +5.7%) are all showing outsized gains. 4 Comments [On the Move, Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 10:00 AM Shares of Tesla Motors (TSLA +5.1%) spike higher to close in on $30. Dreamy rhetoric has run its course on Tesla and productions numbers are now in focus. The latest word from the company is that it hit a milestone of 50 Model S vehicles produced and is still on course to ramp up production to hit 5K for the year. 7 Comments [On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, August 3, 2012, 11:09 AM Will Tesla (TSLA +4.5%) sell 20K vehicles next year and 35K in 2014? While founder Elon Musk says it will as the electric vehicle goes global with launches in Europe, China, and Japan - doubters say manufacturing hiccups will keep production at lower levels. As for the ride itself, it's hard to find a bad review - this time the Chicago Sun Times is raving. 8 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 11:32 AM Tesla Motors (TSLA -2.2%) will see Elon Musk stay on as its CEO for "several more years," according to several media reports. The news, if nothing else, should add support to the idea the company will never settle for being a run-of-the-mill automaker with Musk setting the bar high for the potential of the EV market even at the sacrifice of near-term profits. 12 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 5:17 PM More on Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA): Q2 EPS beats but revenues miss as losses widen to -$106M from -$59M in the year-earlier period. The company says its Model S reservations are now at 12,200, and it maintains its volume projection of 5,000 units for 2012, as well as revenue guidance. Shares -1.4% AH. 4 Comments [Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 4:26 PM Tesla Motors (TSLA): Q2 EPS of -$0.89 beats by $0.04. Revenue of $27M (+15% Q/Q) misses by $3.6M. Shares +3.8% AH. ( PR ) 4 Comments [Earnings, On the Move]
