- Thursday, March 28, 10:30 AM Tesla Motors (TSLA -0.4%) skipped the New York International Auto Show although it made an appearance under the hood of the new Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive. It's all quiet on the Elon Musk Twitter front, with the tipped off big announcement scheduled for today put off until Tuesday. The best guess of industry insiders is that the automaker will announce a secondary offering with Musk leading the buying charge. 9 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 27, 1:52 PM Mercedes-Benz (DDAIF.PK) debuts the 2014 Mercedes B-class Electric Drive at the New York International Auto Show in front of its widescale release to U.S. markets next year. Developed in partnership with Tesla Motors (TSLA +0.8%), the model generates 135 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque with a driving range of 115 miles per charge. (Mercedes-Benz's live stream from NYIAS) 3 Comments [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 26, 8:48 AM When Elon Musk tweets, do people listen? Shares of Tesla Motors (TSLA) are still holding up even though the electric vehicle automaker's CEO tipped off a potential secondary offering of stock yesterday. Though effusive confidence by a CEO is a nice touch, some traders are warning that Tesla's stock price is looking even riskier with the latest development. Look for Elon Musk to give some enticing details on development of the Model X to help smooth over any news of a capital raise. TSLA +0.2% premarket to $37.60. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 25, 3:35 PM Shares of Tesla Motors (TSLA +3.8%) move higher after CEO/founder Elon Musk tweets that he will be making an announcement on Thursday about putting his money where his mouth is. One idea being floating around is that Musk will fire up a secondary offering of which he takes a big chunk and uses the proceeds to pay back the automaker's outstanding DOE loan. 25 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 25, 11:07 AM Heads up Tesla Motors (TSLA +1.8%): The high-end electric vehicle market will see a new entry when Detroit Electric unveils a new +$100K sports car at the Shanghai Motor Show in April. According to the company - which is re-inventing itself after a 75-year sabbatical - production will begin in August with a capacity set at 2.5K cars a year. 9 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, March 22, 8:40 AM Another electric vehicle bombshell: A new report from McKinsey indicates a third of all electric vehicle owners in Japan say they won't buy another with the nation's infrastructure not yet ready to support a network of charging stations. Sluggish sales and the looming threat of federal subsidies getting pulled away seems to have more major automakers subtly shifting their focus toward hybrid production instead of pure EV. 49 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, March 19, 7:26 AM Chinese auto makers Zhejiang Geely Holding Group and Dongfeng Motor Corp. back away from making an offer for Fisker Automotive after the company proposes that a commitment to build cars at a Delaware factory should be part of any deal. The drama unfolding with Fisker will be closely watched by Tesla Motors (TSLA) with a hybrid Karma model a potential rival in the high-end EV market. 5 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, March 15, 8:47 AM Automobile prices on new vehicles once again lagged overall consumer inflation, down 0.3% M/M in February and only up 1.1% compared to a year ago. Though automakers have been making a big deal on their earnings conference calls about being less promotional in recent quarters, today's CPI report showed the largest monthly drop in new car prices since 2010. 17 Comments [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Thursday, March 14, 12:59 PM Things are starting to get interesting in China's automobile market. Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) hope to continue to benefit from the falloff of Japanese automakers (HMC, TM, NSANY.OB) through their local joint ventures, but domestic firms are starting to understand the need to ramp up quality and innovation in order to compete. As it stands now, domestic brands only account for a third of all sales - short of the Beijing's target for 40% share. Volkswagen (VLKAY.PK) appears to be all-in with 70% of its new plants slated for China, while even Tesla Motors (TSLA) thinks it can make a splash in the region. 9 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, March 14, 10:18 AM Spain is the latest European nation to move to an organized effort to install electric charging points for vehicles. Previously, the government in the U.K. said it would subsidize a broad program to install charging stations in train stations and in other commons areas while Norway is ahead of the pack in the EV game. 7 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 13, 11:13 AM Electric vehicle wrapup: 1) A Reuters article takes a harsh look at the cost of Norway's government-assisted push into electric vehicles. Pure market share is up to 3%, but the numbers aren't adding up. 2) Another win for Tesla Motors (TSLA +0.4%) in its battle against auto dealers as Minnesota takes steps to allow the automaker to open retail stores in the state. 3) Henrik Fisker is reported to be leaving Fisker Automotive due to a disagreement with the management of the company he founded. 8 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, March 11, 1:07 PM Tesla Motors (TSLA +0.8%) will push back the launch of its Model X to late 2014, according to comments from reps and information contained in a SEC filing (10-K). Tesla on the Model X delay: "We do not expect a material impact on our profitability in 2013 or 2014." 25 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, March 8, 2:06 PM Tesla Motors (TSLA +0.7%) says the Department of Energy approved a plan in which the automaker will repay its government loan by December of 2017 with accelerated payments beginning in 2015. It's a faster pace of repayment that CEO Elon Musk hinted at in recent interviews. (TSLA annual report) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, March 8, 10:28 AM Do automakers stand a chance of increasing electric vehicle sales in China? Though the talk from major companies (F, GM, VLKAY.PK, TM) is that they plan to start or ramp up electric sales in China - and even Tesla Motors (TSLA +1.4%) plans to open a dealership in the nation - by all accounts EV sales in China are stuck in neutral. Mind-blowing levels of smog in Beijing this year have elevated the debate on vehicle emissions, but until the government actively decides to sacrifice economic growth for environmentally friendly practices the EV initiatives are speculative. 29 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, March 8, 4:31 AM Tesla Motors (TSLA) plans to repay $465M in Energy Department loans five years early in 2017, the company said yesterday in its annual report. Under new terms of the debt, warrants that Tesla issued to the government will vest in 2018 if the loans are not paid off, enabling Energy to purchase over 3M company shares at a discount. 9 Comments [Consumer, Earnings]
- Thursday, March 7, 2:32 PM While shares of Tesla Motors (TSLA +1.4%) continue to flirt with making all-time highs, Stone Fox Capital suggests to investors some profit-taking might be in order given consensus EPS estimates are trickling lower. Though the automaker's forward progress has been impressive, its road to profitability still looks bumpy. 11 Comments [Consumer]

Intangible Valuation: $650 share price would make $TSLA worth *twice* what $GM is worth -- 2 times what the largest car manufacture in the world is worth.
