- Monday, April 15, 10:23 AM Tesla Motors (TSLA -1.8%) CEO Elon Musk says he will take cases against auto dealer groups to federal court if the automaker fails to win approval at the state level to sell directly to the public through retail stores. So far, Tesla has had good results in the courtroom on the issue. 17 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 11, 2:44 PM Tesla Motors (TSLA +5.5%) wins a court battle in New York when a judge dismisses a case against the automaker trying to prevent it from selling directly to consumers. 6 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 11, 12:14 PM Automobile stocks (CARZ, VROM) hit a higher gear with a positive report on sales in China and ongoing enthusiasm over sales stateside helping to tip sentiment. Advancers: Toyota (TM) +3.6%, General Motors (GM) +3.1%, Honda (HMC) +2.7%, Tesla Motors (TSLA) +3.2%. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 10, 3:28 PM Tesla Motors (TSLA +3.2%) CEO Elon Musk pushes for support in Texas on a bill which would allow electric vehicle manufacturers to sell cars directly to consumers. Though the automaker has won a few victories in other states, the battle against Texas auto dealers could be a bit tougher. 54 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 3, 9:27 AM Tesla Motors (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk went on the offensive in an interview on Bloomberg TV. The exec says he will "personally guarantee" that the residual value of the Model S will match those of the Mercedes S-Class with "all" his assets. As for Tesla's fuzzy math on the true cost of its leasing option, Musk notes the nit-picking over the true cost diminishes the overall theme that the Model S is now more affordable for many consumers. TSLA -2.5% premarket to $43.24. (video) 17 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 3, 8:23 AM Electric vehicle news: 1) Though Nissan's (NSANY.OB) all-electric Leaf set a record for sales, the automaker had to lower prices to stoke demand during the quarter. 2) General Motors (GM) says only 1,478 Chevrolet Volt cars were sold in March, although YTD sales are still up 8% Y/Y. 3) Sales of Toyota's (TM) Prius hybrid fell 23% in March to 22,140 but it remains the automaker's 3rd most popular model. 4) Tesla's (TSLA) "revolutionary" announcement on leasing options aimed at broadening its customer base draws scorn from auto industry analysts on substance. 11 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, April 2, 6:08 PM The actual cost of Tesla's (TSLA) Model S financing plan for its cheapest model is $1,051/month (per Tesla's site), assuming a 2.95% APR, 10% down, and a 66-month loan. To get to Tesla's estimated "true cost of ownership" of $373/month, one has to discount (among other things) $284/month in energy savings, a $222/month business tax benefit, and (amusingly) $100/month for "time spent driving to a gas station and refueling" - Tesla assumes buyers value their time at $100/hour. Shares now -2% AH. 27 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 2, 5:04 PM Tesla (TSLA) unveils what it calls a "revolutionary" financing option for the Model S. Buyers can purchase a Model S on credit (provided by US Bank and Wells Fargo) for 10% down and monthly payments - Tesla claims the "true net out of pocket cost" is less than $500/month after factoring gas savings. After 36 months, buyers have the right to sell the car back to Tesla "for the same residual value percentage" as a Mercedes S Class vehicle. Shares -0.4% AH. 50 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 2, 12:56 PM Tesla Motors (TSLA +1.3%) says it will hold a conference call at 5:00 pm EST during which it will make an announcement and make CEO Elon Musk available for a Q&A session. Musk is still dropping mysterious hints on Twitter about the upcoming news, saying it's "more important" than the Q1 profit the automaker turned and joking it will be the 2nd in a 5-part trilogy. (webcast) 14 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 2, 8:09 AM Morgan Stanley thinks the decision by Tesla Motors (TSLA) to drop the short-range version of the Model S is the right move for the automaker. Though it's a minor blow to the concept of mass market EV adoption, consolidating production around demand makes sense. Only 4% of Model S customers selected the 40kWh battery option. What to watch: Tesla is due to make a dramatic announcement later today with opinion divided if a capital raise is in store, a major expansion of its charging network, or an Elon Musk wildcard. TSLA +1.1% premarket to $44.40, but stay tuned. 21 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, April 1, 9:22 AM "I wanted to reach out to ask a favor," begins an e-mail sent last week by a senior exec at Tesla Motors (TSLA) to potential customers asking them to quickly turn in their paperwork in the last week of the quarter to help the company become profitable. Though it's not the first time an automaker has become hyper-aggressive in trying to stoke up extra sales before the end of a reporting period, it could be an indication that some Q2 Model S sales were pulled forward into Q1. Shares of TSLA are rocketing higher premarket, up 15.2% to $43.66 26 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, April 1, 9:11 AM Premarket gainers: KWK +33%. BCRX +30%. SNFCA +23%. TSLA +16%. AM +12%. VRNG +10%. PAL +6%. Comment! [On the Move]
- Monday, April 1, 7:50 AM Shares of Tesla Motors (TSLA) roar 5.5% higher after the EV automaker announces that February sales beat its own guidance and that it will be mildly profitable for Q1. What to watch: Though TSLA shorts could get thrashed around a bit on today's news, there's still the meaning of Elon Musk's cryptic tweet from last week to hash out with the company due to make another announcement tomorrow. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, April 1, 6:18 AM Tesla (TSLA) announces Model S sales of more than 4,750 units, exceeding mid-February guidance of 4,500. As a result, the company ups Q1 earnings guidance, now expecting to be profitable on both a GAAP and non-GAAP basis. The small battery option for the Model S will not enter production due to lack of demand. (PR) 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 28, 10:30 AM Tesla Motors (TSLA -0.4%) skipped the New York International Auto Show although it made an appearance under the hood of the new Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive. It's all quiet on the Elon Musk Twitter front, with the tipped off big announcement scheduled for today put off until Tuesday. The best guess of industry insiders is that the automaker will announce a secondary offering with Musk leading the buying charge. 9 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 27, 1:52 PM Mercedes-Benz (DDAIF.PK) debuts the 2014 Mercedes B-class Electric Drive at the New York International Auto Show in front of its widescale release to U.S. markets next year. Developed in partnership with Tesla Motors (TSLA +0.8%), the model generates 135 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque with a driving range of 115 miles per charge. $TSLA's price is interesting -- the company is, apparently, a fourth the size of $GM and a sixth the size of $F. - View all 13 replies

Intangible Valuation: I am watching it closely with the *possibility* of shorting it. Bad news will crush the stock at some point I think...don't know when. -
Zeus2012: I would not short TSLA until there's indication of the Fed phasing out QE.
