- Friday, May 17, 2:21 PM Tesoro (TSO +5.3%) says the FTC approved its purchase of BP's 240K bbl/day Carson, Calif., refinery and other assets. The commission found the deal would not substantially lessen competition among seven refiners for gasoline in California, the largest U.S. gasoline market. Tesoro Logistics (TLLP +3.5%) will acquire the first portion of Carson logistics assets from TSO for $640M. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 2, 3:51 PM Tesoro (TSO +5.9%) is nearing the end of the regulatory review of its planned purchase of BP's 240K bbl/day Carson, Calif., refinery, CEO Greg Goff says in today's conference call. TSO says it plans to combine the plant with its 103K bbl/day Wilmington refinery; the purchase is expected to take place by the end of this quarter. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 17, 12:57 PM Energy stocks (XLE -2.8%) trade well below the broader market as crude oil futures plunge after a surprising drop in U.S. distillate supplies and a smaller drop in crude supplies than API data showed. With the U.S. dollar substantially higher, analyst Tariq Zahir sees crude continuing its downward trend. Refiners: VLO -3.9%, TSO -5.6%, PBF -6.3%, CVI -6.8%. Big losers: LPI -5.4%, HLX -5.9%, PDS -6.5%, PWE -5.8%, KOG -4.4%. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, April 12, 12:26 PM Oppenheimer points to four reasons that may allow refining stocks to recover from their recent selloff: continued wide differentials between WTI and Brent pricing; continued cheap natural gas; growing diesel and gasoline imports; declining environmental spending. But it's another difficult day for sector stocks the firm likes: HFC -1.2%, MPC -3.5%, PSX -2.9%, TSO -1.6%, VLO -2.8%. 7 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 11, 3:33 PM Phillips 66 (PSX -2.9%) shares slump as it reports an emission at its Rodeo refinery in California related to an unplanned unit shutdown. It's part of a broad slump in refiners today, picking up pessimism in the sector which has led to sharp recent losses: VLO -4.8% (despite a plug by Jim Cramer), HFC -4.4%, TSO -3.3%, MPC -3.2%, WNR -2.9%, CVI -2.4%, ALJ -2.3%, NTI -2.2%. 4 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 4, 12:34 PM Refiners recoup a sliver of losses from their two-day slide following concerns about looming expenses from newly announced emissions regulations. Barclays believes refiners are fundamentally cheap for long-term investors, the EPA's new rules are "not as bad as it seems" and the Brent/WTI spread should widen. VLO +1.1%, TSO +0.6%, WNR +3.9%, MPC +1.5%, ALJ +3.1%, HFC +1.3%, CVI +1.8%. 4 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 3, 11:17 AM Looks like another bad day for refiners on fears of increased costs from tougher standards on gasoline, even as BAML says yesterday's selloff of Valero (VLO -4.8%) was overdone. WNR -7.6%, PSX -6.9%, MPC -6.2%, ALJ -6.1%, NTI -5.3%, TSO -4.7%, HFC -4.7%. CVR Refining (CVRR -1.5%) is lower even after announcing estimated costs to meet Tier 3 standards are less than $20M. 21 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 2, 3:13 PM Valero (VLO -6%) says proposed new rules aimed at reducing sulfur content in gasoline would cost it hundreds of millions of dollars in equipment construction and upgrades alone. In addition to spending $300M-$400M initially to implement the rule, VLO also predicts operating costs would rise by an undetermined amount every year due to the rules proposed Friday by the EPA. (earlier) 53 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 2, 2:29 PM Shares of refiners are taking a beating today, apparently on fears of increased costs from proposed tougher standards on gasoline. The EPA is proposing the so-called Tier 3 rules that will require refiners to reduce the sulfur content of gasoline to 10 parts per million by 2017 from 30 ppm. VLO -6.2%, TSO -3.5%, MPC -4.3%, ALJ -4.5%, PSX -3.1%, HFC -3.2%, WNR -4.8%, NTI -5.5%. 39 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 13, 10:44 AM Since when is Macquarie such a market mover? Its downgrade of Valero (VLO -4.4%) is hitting refiners hard; the firm thinks the government's forced usage of biofuels is causing unintended consequences that will negatively impact refiners and may result in high RIN prices. Ratings for Holly Frontier (HFC -2.5%) and CVR Energy (CVI -3.3%) are cut too. Also: TSO -2.9%, WNR -3.7%, MPC -1.5%. 7 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Monday, March 11, 12:52 PM Refiners are hit in reaction to a WSJ story calling attention to the squeeze they face from the rising costs of complying with a federal mandate to use corn ethanol in fuel. An EPA proposal, which could be made final as soon as next month, could force refiners and fuel importers to use more than 14B gallons of ethanol, up from 13.3B in 2012. VLO -4%, MPC -1.7%, TSO -2.5%, HFC -2.7%, WNR -3%, PSX -1.4%. 28 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, March 1, 3:45 PM Refiners have a big day as oil dropping to its low of the year while gasoline (UGA) rises has their profit margin widening even further. VLO +2.3%, TSO +3.5%, WNR +5.2%. 4 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 7, 12:54 PM Tesoro's (TSO +3%) Q4 earnings narrowly missed Wall Street forecasts, as gross refining margin rose to $14.25/bbl from $6.02, benefiting from less expensive Canadian and domestic crude oil. In the conference call, CEO Greg Goff says TSO is looking for ways to bring more Canadian crude to its west coast refineries via rail cars and barges. Comment! [Energy, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 6, 4:44 PM Tesoro (TSO): Q4 EPS of $1.34 misses by $0.07. Revenue of $8.27B (+7.2% Y/Y) beats by $1.21B. Shares -2.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Energy, Breaking News, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 6, 3:49 PM Tesoro (TSO +1.9%) advances ahead of its Q4 earnings report scheduled after today's close, as Simmons analysts upgrade shares to Overweight from Neutral, based on “expectations of earnings upward momentum" based on valuation and recent acquisitions, among other factors. Consensus EPS expectations run ~$1.46. Refining peers VLO, HES and MPC are up ~25% YTD, while TSO +16%. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 2:27 PM Valero's (VLO +11.4%) "best quarter in years" is broadly lifting shares of other refiners: TSO +4.5%, PSX +4.6%, HFC +5.7%, WNR +5.1%, MPC +4.9%. VLO's switch away from imported light, sweet crude toward domestic sources was anticipated but came earlier than expected, and represents a milestone in a U.S. energy industry hoping for self-sufficiency. 6 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
