TSO vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Tesoro Corporation (“Tesoro”) was incorporated in Delaware in 1968. Based in San Antonio, Texas, we are one of the largest independent petroleum refiners and marketers in the United States. - Wednesday, January 9, 11:23 AM Tesoro (TSO -2.4%) plans to shutter its 93,500 bbl/day Kapolei, Hawaii, refinery and convert it to an import, storage and distribution terminal after failing to sell it. TSO says it plans to take a one-time charge of $1-$1.10/share in Q4, and expects to realize $300M-$350M in cash by the end of 2013 on a reduction in working capital needs due to the conversion. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, January 7, 2:58 PM Tesoro (TSO -5.3%) amends a credit pact to allow for as much as $4B in borrowings under a revolver that has a current capacity of $1.85B. Its Tesoro Logistics (TLLP -2.2%) subsidiary also boosts a credit line to $500M from $300M, with the ability to increase borrowings to $650M. Howard Weil cuts TSO shares, along with Phillips 66 (PSX -3.2%), Valero (VLO -2.9%) and other refiners. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 2:47 PM Tesoro (TSO +2.2%) is upgraded to Outperform from Neutral with a $60 price target (up from $53) by Credit Suisse after shares have underperformed peers and remained broadly flat since August. "While we don't have a crystal ball on the FTC approval of the acquisition of BP Carson City, we are reasonably hopeful the deal would close," the firm says. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 3:47 PM In its analyst day presentation, Tesoro (TSO -2.2%) projects $455M in 2013 capital spending after coming in at $535M this year. TSO says it seeks to maintain a minimum cash balance of $600M-$750M, and cites a drive towards investment-grade credit a top priority. Says returns on its large capital projects are exceeding expectations; believes improvements are not fully reflected in the share price. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 11:41 AM Tesoro's (TSO -4.9%) proposed acquisition of Arco and its Carson refinery for $2.5B faces increasing opposition, LA Times reports, as activists say the deal would reduce competition and raise prices for motorists. The deal is drawing fire, as California's average gasoline price hits a record $4.671/gal., because it would leave 51% of the state's refining capacity with just TSO and Chevron. 1 Comment [Energy, M&A, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 4, 2012, 11:49 AM Crude oil futures (OIL +2.2%) bounce off yesterday's 4% drop; traders may be betting that prices fell too hard, and Middle East tensions are escalating after Turkey fired on targets in Syria. Oil servicers such as Halliburton (HAL +2.4%) and Schlumberger (SLB +0.8%) are rising, and the move is lifting refiners: TSO +3.5%, VLO +3.3%, MPC +1.3%, WNR +1.3%. Comment! [Energy, Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, September 10, 2012, 9:45 AM Tesoro (TSO +2%) pushes higher after a weekend Barron's story says the West Coast oil refiner "may have pulled off the acquisition of the year" when it reached a deal last month to purchase a large California refinery from BP for $1.175B. Investors pushed TSO stock up ~10% afterward, but shares still look appealing, trading for 6.8x projected 2012 profit of $5.84/share. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 10:50 AM Valero Energy (VLO -1.1%) leads a retreat across much of the oil sector as Hurricane Isaac leaves behind less damage to the Gulf Coast's energy industry than first feared. Among refiners: COP -0.2%, TSO -1%. Big E&Ps: XOM -0.2%, CVX -0.5%, MRO -1.1%. Oilfield services: RIG -1.5%, HAL -1.2%, SLB -0.7%. Explorers: APA -0.3%, APC -0.3%. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, August 13, 2012, 2:17 PM Tesoro's (TSO +9.2%) $2.5B purchase of BP's California refinery looks cheap: at ~15% of its replacement value vs. the industry norm of 25%-30% after factoring in plans to sell certain assets in the deal to its MLP (TLLP), a consultant tells Bloomberg. Analysts say refiners like TSO have more upside given the discount available to buyers of U.S. crude, which still trades well below Brent crude. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, August 13, 2012, 10:39 AM Tesoro's (TSO +6%) $2.5B purchase of BP's Carson oil refinery goes against the prevailing wisdom that says California is a lousy place to be a refiner because of the state’s environmental regulations. The deal brings the number of TSO's California refineries to three and lifts its operations in the state to 60% of its total. TSO says the deal leaves it "well positioned to generate significant operational efficiencies." 2 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, August 13, 2012, 7:54 AM BP's pain is Tesoro's (TSO) gain, the company agreeing to purchase the oil giant's Carson, CA refinery and ARCO retail operation for about $2.5B. Tesoro (+3.2% premarket) expects the acquisition to be accretive to earnings in each of the first two years of operations. (PR) Comment! [Breaking News, M&A, Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 10:53 AM Tesoro (TSO +5.2%) shares are strong as analysts at Tudor Pickering say the refinery fire at a Chevron facility in California could benefit the company. CVX says its crude unit is down at the 245K bbl/day refinery. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 11:36 AM Tesoro (TSO +12.1%) shares surge after Q2 earnings rose 78% on improving gross refining margins and lower expenses. CEO Greg Goff says TSO expects shipments of cheaper Bakken crude to its Washington state refinery will start as planned in September and ramp up to 50K bbl/day, more than expected, from an initial 30K bbl/day by year's end. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 8:09 PM More on Tesoro (TSO): Q2 easily beats across the board. Net earnings jumped 78% Y/Y on better gross refining margins and lower overall expenses. Gross margin widened to 15.1% from 12.3%, as input costs and operating costs decreased. Shares +4.6% AH. Comment! [Energy, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 7:51 PM Tesoro (TSO): Q2 EPS of $2.87 beats by $0.63. Revenue of $8.1B (+1.8% Y/Y) beats by $1.2B. Shares +5% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 10:47 AM Marathon Petroleum (MPC +2.9%) jumps after Goldman Sachs upgrades shares to Buy from Neutral, taking a positive view of MPC's management team, its "integrated, high-quality asset base" and growing “social contract” with investors to return excess cash. The firm also downgraded COP and WNR, raised TSO, and reiterated its Conviction Buy rating for HFC. (earlier) 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
