Thursday, July 26, 2012, 3:07 PM More on Google's (GOOG) fiber service: Though it's charging $70/month for standalone 1 Gbps connections, Google says it will offer free 5 Mbps connections (save for a $300 installation fee) for 7 years, in the hope that users will upgrade. Time Warner Cable (TWC) might have something to be worried about after all. Thursday, July 26, 2012, 1:07 PM As expected, Google's (GOOG) Kansas City fiber network will offer pay-TV services to go with 1 Gbps broadband connectivity. iPad/Android tablet streaming will be included, as will a 2TB cloud DVR service. A TV/Internet package will cost $120/month, and standalone broadband service $70/month. Those prices are unlikely to send local rival Time Warner Cable (TWC) running for cover. Backing up prior comments, Verizon (VZ) is raising the price of its base FiOS broadband plan (15 Mbps downlink/5 Mbps uplink) by $10 to $65/month, The Verge reports, and is also now insisting on a 2-year contract. The second-cheapest plan (50 Mbps down/25 Mbps up) goes for $75/month, and the costliest plan (300 Mbps down/65 Mbps) sells for $205/month. TWC is also eying broadband price hikes. 2 Comments [Tech]
Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 12:58 PM The FCC is exploring whether online video sites such as Hulu and YouTube (GOOG) should be governed by the same rules as traditional pay-TV providers. Word out of DC is that FCC chief Julius Genachowski backs a pay-for-play Internet fee model, which he claims would raise efficiencies in the market. Cable providers have already been tossing around the idea of charging customers based on Internet usage, instead of a flat fee - with Comcast (CMCSA +1.1%) going as far as saying it will test the model in two U.S. cities. 2 Comments [Consumer]

In addition to talking about Verizon's (VZ) upcoming shared data plans, CFO Fran Shammo said Big Red plans to hike prices for its FiOS fiber-to-the-home TV and Internet services, citing strong customer satisfaction. Shammo's remarks come even though Verizon has no plans to invest in expanding FiOS into new markets. Time Warner Cable (TWC) is also reportedly planning to raise its broadband prices. Comment! [Tech]
Monday, May 14, 2012, 2:47 PM Gizmodo can't help but speculate that tech-savvy people may not be running cable companies such as Time Warner Cable (TWC +0.8%) after exec Glenn Britt misfires on a couple of softball questions in a group interview with the NYT. The exec warmed up his audience by admitting unfamiliarity with Apple's AirPlay - after contending that no simple way to get Internet-based video onto the television screen exists. Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 2:02 PM Though Nielsen recently argued cord-cutting is for real, using 2011 subscriber losses as proof, Bernstein's Craig Moffett points to Q1 data as evidence the phenomenon is no big deal. Major U.S. pay-TV providers added 422K subs in Q1, Moffett notes, as gains of 375K and 185K for telco and satellite providers, respectively, more than offset a 137K drop in cable subs.
