- Thursday, July 26, 2012, 3:07 PM More on Google's (GOOG) fiber service: Though it's charging $70/month for standalone 1 Gbps connections, Google says it will offer free 5 Mbps connections (save for a $300 installation fee) for 7 years, in the hope that users will upgrade. Time Warner Cable (TWC) might have something to be worried about after all. So might Google investors if the company chooses to expand the service, and its engineers don't find ways to minimize capex. 16 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, July 26, 2012, 2:08 PM Time Warner Cable (TWC) declares $0.56/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 2.65%. For shareholders of record Aug 31. Payable Sep 17. Ex-div date Aug 29. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Thursday, July 26, 2012, 1:07 PM As expected, Google's (GOOG) Kansas City fiber network will offer pay-TV services to go with 1 Gbps broadband connectivity. iPad/Android tablet streaming will be included, as will a 2TB cloud DVR service. A TV/Internet package will cost $120/month, and standalone broadband service $70/month. Those prices are unlikely to send local rival Time Warner Cable (TWC) running for cover. Still no word on whether Google plans to expand its service to other cities. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 6:55 AM Time Warner (TWC) removes a local TV station in New York from its broadcasting lineup after the station reportedly asked for a sharp 300% increase in carriage fees. The dramatic action highlights the growing tension in the cable industry over how fees are paid out with the pressure of Internet content options looming. (Previous: DirecTV vs. Viacom) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, June 25, 2012, 2:51 PM The DoJ has requested information from DirecTV (DTV -1.5%) and Dish Network (DISH -4.5%) about pricing contracts with TV networks as part of its wider probe into whether or not cable companies are pressuring programmers to set pricing that intentionally squeezes online content providers such as Netflix (NFLX -0.5%) and Hulu. (Related: Cable companies contend they run their own "private" Internet) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, June 22, 2012, 10:59 AM Do Comcast (CMCSA +0.6%), Time Warner (TWC +0.5%), and other cable providers run their own private Internet when they offer lush on-demand video services at they same time they impose data usage caps on customers? That's the crux of the matter the DoJ is investigating at the behest of streaming firms such as Hulu and Netflix (NFLX +1.4%) - with their contention that the companies are unjustly rebranding the public Web as a private product. 2 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 4:09 AM The Justice Department has reportedly launched a broad antitrust investigation into whether cable companies are acting improperly to suppress competition from online video. DoJ officials have spoken to several online video providers, including Netflix (NFLX), and are said to have questioned Comcast (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (TWC) and others about issues like data caps. 4 Comments [Consumer, Top Stories]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 11:08 AM U.S. broadband continues to get more expensive. Backing up prior comments, Verizon (VZ) is raising the price of its base FiOS broadband plan (15 Mbps downlink/5 Mbps uplink) by $10 to $65/month, The Verge reports, and is also now insisting on a 2-year contract. The second-cheapest plan (50 Mbps down/25 Mbps up) goes for $75/month, and the costliest plan (300 Mbps down/65 Mbps) sells for $205/month. TWC is also eying broadband price hikes. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 12:58 PM The FCC is exploring whether online video sites such as Hulu and YouTube (GOOG) should be governed by the same rules as traditional pay-TV providers. Any move in this direction could have huge implications, potentially giving video sites the right to carry channels content owners have been unwilling to license (and thus representing major new competition for traditional providers), while also requiring them to carry less popular content. 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 3:10 PM Are cable companies lining up for a money grab? Word out of DC is that FCC chief Julius Genachowski backs a pay-for-play Internet fee model, which he claims would raise efficiencies in the market. Cable providers have already been tossing around the idea of charging customers based on Internet usage, instead of a flat fee - with Comcast (CMCSA +1.1%) going as far as saying it will test the model in two U.S. cities. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, May 21, 2012, 8:40 AM Cable giants Bright House Networks, Cablevision (CVC), Cox Communications, Comcast (CMCSA), and Time Warner Cable (TWC) announce that they will allow high-speed Internet customers to share each other's Wi-Fi networks in metropolitan areas as a value-added service. The 50K hotspots under the new CableWiFi banner will attempt to carve out market share from wireless carriers. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 9:55 AM Viacom (VIAB -0.31%) and Time Warner Cable (TWC -0.4%) have reportedly settled a dispute over streaming Viacom shows to iPads. A deal between the two companies will end legal suits flying back and forth and allow Viacom programming to be available to TWC subscribers on IP-enabled devices. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 9:39 AM It's good to be part of a duopoly. In addition to talking about Verizon's (VZ) upcoming shared data plans, CFO Fran Shammo said Big Red plans to hike prices for its FiOS fiber-to-the-home TV and Internet services, citing strong customer satisfaction. Shammo's remarks come even though Verizon has no plans to invest in expanding FiOS into new markets. Time Warner Cable (TWC) is also reportedly planning to raise its broadband prices. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, May 14, 2012, 2:47 PM Gizmodo can't help but speculate that tech-savvy people may not be running cable companies such as Time Warner Cable (TWC +0.8%) after exec Glenn Britt misfires on a couple of softball questions in a group interview with the NYT. The exec warmed up his audience by admitting unfamiliarity with Apple's AirPlay - after contending that no simple way to get Internet-based video onto the television screen exists. Then as a showstopper, he lamented that the little hockey puck Apple TV thing can't push Internet content to TVs. 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 2:02 PM Though Nielsen recently argued cord-cutting is for real, using 2011 subscriber losses as proof, Bernstein's Craig Moffett points to Q1 data as evidence the phenomenon is no big deal. Major U.S. pay-TV providers added 422K subs in Q1, Moffett notes, as gains of 375K and 185K for telco and satellite providers, respectively, more than offset a 137K drop in cable subs. Also, cable's decline was smaller than Q4's 316K. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
