Ambac is the puzzlement to me. After years of boom, it is logical to expect creativity and greed to dominate Wall Street (firms as well as the millions of investors). Fannie and Freddie had to serve stockholders, and were pushed by Congress to be more lax. The ratings agencies exist to measure the risk, but they are paid by the people that they are rating. The place where you would expect caution and skepticism would be the bond insurers. What were they thinking? Reply

Explosive growth for WSJ online, at a time when most other newspapers are reporting much slower growth in online revenue and traffic trends. Seems like WSJ online will be a strong revenue engine for the next year, at least.

With regards to Marvel, I find it profoundly interesting that the 'analysts' were pretty pessimistic about Marvel prior to the release of Iron Man. But they flip-flopped pretty quickly and set Marvel up for a fall with their overly optimistic opinions. But Marvel is known for conservative estimates, an continually exceeds them. I think the 'analysts' need to go back to school and stop trying to be media stars themselves. Reply

WiMax Empire Poses Continual Threat to the AT&T Network [view article]
WiMAX will be deployed before LTE and both use OFDM (which is not used in HSDPA by the way). But there is a big difference between them, and that is the business case. Let's remember that, as soon as it is the real driver of the technology evolution. WiMAX is a new standard, which has good supporters and is being pushed by Sprint-Nextel as 4G (which it is not... yet) to offer broadband nationwide in the U.S. Sprint's WiMAX is 802.16e which is not related to all "WiMAX references" in the world and is not backwards compatible. Its standard has no definition for compatibility with any other technology, not even Wi-Fi handovers are mentioned. And not all the big players support it (Ericsson, who happens to be the biggest infrastructure supplier in the market).

LTE, is supported by 3GPP and all the infrastructure vendors. Its compatibility with GSM, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA is defined since the start. It allows use of multiple bandwiths (starting from 1.2MHz) and FDMA and TDMA options, which allows it to be implemented in every piece of frequency that is currently used for 2G or 3G networks, and grow in smooth way. The terminals that will support LTE will have an smooth evolution as the HSDPA terminals did. You actually don't need to build a huge network to start offering it (this might sound good for carriers) and finally, all big players are supporting it (T-Mobile, AT&T, Vodafone, Telefonica, America Movil, etc).

I believe in WiMAX, as a good broadband solution as backbone for rural areas... not as an access solution, as it is not compatible with the current techonologies, not even CDMA which is so well spread in the U.S.

The times when a new technology could just appear and make a business case for itself are gone. If you are not compatible with the current access networks you may not have any future. A business case for a 14B USD investment in a technology which not everyone believes in, and with an LTE solution coming... sounds risky. May work but I would never bet on that. Jim Cramer's 10 Predictions for 2008 [view article]
I know it's very hard for everybody to accept but:

"Information"... fed to you by commercial advertising on television isn't information at all. It's designed to sell products, not to inform you. The only thing that the network cares about his Nielson Ratings, not his accuracy.

This goes for all "news" on television. If lying about weapons of mass destruction gets viewership, they'll do it. And if talking about Afghanistan reduces viewership, they won't do it. They are in the business of making money through ad revenue, not to inform you.

If you want to know what is going on, you're currently sitting in front of the most powerful communication tool ever created by mankind. It's not just for porn anymore. Make some use of it, stupid.

But there is an good side to all of this - it's a lot easier for me to make money when there are so many stupid traders in the market. A lot easier. I suppose I should be grateful for the idiot box churning out so many idiots.

Coal liguification into synthetic gasoline is expanding at a rapid pace in Canada. One such company is Canadian Oil Sands Trust. Coal delivers about four times the number of BTU's per dollar than oil so that the economies of scale are in place either way oil prices go. Reply

i thought that coal to liquids price point for viabilty was stated to be anything above $40 a barrel. we'll be at 80-90 soon and settle. i think alt energy plays will still be good there - you just will have to find the more viable ones at that point - not just any and all. Reply

Greedy crooks in Banks and Broker firms wrapped subprime, alt-a, ARMS, credit cards, bad loans, etc. into structured finance vehicles i.e.: CDO-ABS-MBS-SIVs, they misled the market and bond insurers into these fraud and now everyone is paying the price! now the misleds have to clear up their books from that toxic waste! One strategy will be to SELL CDS on toxic wastefull junk at 'attractive prices' to buttom feeders this way they will get capital and delever from derivative liabilities on toxic waste. Reply

Not sure if WiMax will have that big of a headstart on LTE. Just read the latest article on Yahoo (regarding IDT) where they mention Clearwire's 1st four markets won't launch until next year...& again it's only four markets. You can bet that when Verizon & ATT launch LTE, it will go large scale & quickly overcome any "first to market" advantage WiMax has/had. LTE testing has already begun in sites so it's just a matter of a short time. Reply

Cablevision Gets a Win in Its Legal Struggle Over DVR Rights [view article]
Tivo has many value features that the Comcast DVR does not have. It knows the TV schedule, so it will record a program even if there is a time or date change. Also, it has wishlists, so you can automatically record Marilyn Munroe movies, for example. Comcast offers Tivo as an option. Reply

Many of your statements are correct. I am an unbias player in this stream. Pivot was actually a consumer based tool/service that would work inconjunction and enhance the cable companies services. And, yes there will be a compatibility standard developed between LTE and WiMax
