- Monday, October 15, 2012, 4:05 AM Amazon (AMZN) is in negotiations to acquire TI's (TXN) cellular-chip operations in a deal that would be worth billions of dollars, the Calcalist Israeli newspaper reports. TI, whose chips are used in Kindle devices and Barnes & Nobles' (BKS) Nooks, has already said it won't invest in supporting its customers' plans for smartphones and tablets to the same extent as previously. 9 Comments [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 9:30 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) is set to acquire Israeli chipmaker DesignArt Networks for $120M-$140M, Globes reports. DesignArt develops processors for 3G/4G base stations and mobile backhaul gear, and is a leader in the growing market for small base station chips. The purchase should help Qualcomm, which already has a sizable base station processor business, compete with rivals such as Cavium (CAVM), Texas Instruments (TXN), and Broadcom's (BRCM) NetLogic division. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, September 2, 2011, 4:27 PM Microsemi (MSCC) may abandon its hostile bid for Zarlink Semiconductor (ZLKKF.PK), now that Zarlink shares are trading 9% above Microsemi's offer price of C$3.35. Zarlink claims to be in talks with 15 interested parties about a buyout; analysts name INTC, TXN, and QCOM as potential suitors, given Zarlink's wireless medical chip technology. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, July 18, 2011, 9:02 AM Maxim Integrated (MXIM) is acquiring SensorDynamics, a developer of MEMS sensor chips. The acquisition should help Maxim compete against MEMS market leaders such as Texas Instruments (TXN), HP (HPQ), and STMicroelectronics (STM). Last year, Yole Development estimated the MEMS market will grow from over $7B in 2010 to $16B in 2014. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, May 11, 2011, 3:14 PM FBR Capital considers recent chip deals for Atheros (ATHR) and National Semi (NSM) a "solid start for tech M&A," citing SLAB, ATML, FCS, IRF, MXIM, ADI, LLTC and ISIL as potential takeover targets. Given techs' increasing confidence about the economy and that balance sheets are flush with cash, "more M&A activity could be on the come." Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, May 9, 2011, 11:36 AM Nvidia (NVDA +0.6%) plans to pay $367M for U.K. firm Icera, which makes baseband ("soft radio") chips for 3G and 4G mobile handsets - setting Nvidia up to offer both the key processors in mobile phones. The company says baseband is growing fast, at $15B annually; while Nvidia and Intel (INTC) ramp up in that segment, Texas Instruments (TXN) is getting out. Comment! [Tech, M&A]

Some trying to look at the potential buy of TXN's mobil chip business by AMZN is a good thing. But TXN wanted to discontinue it. AMZN - View all 2 replies

With $TXN out of the mobile SoC race, could $INTC try to get the spot in the next $AMZN kindle fire? Or will $QCOM nab it? - View all 2 replies
