- Wednesday, April 17, 12:26 PM Chip stocks have a rough day (SOXX -2.8%) following Cirrus Logic's warning, light guidance from Linear Technology (LLTC -4.6%) to go with a Q1 beat - Linear sees 1%-4% Q/Q revenue growth for calendar Q2, below a 4.7% consensus - and ho-hum Q1 results/Q2 guidance from Intel. Apple suppliers Broadcom (BRCM -4%), Avago (AVGO -5.5%), STMicroelectronics (STM -6.7%), NXP (NXPI -7%), RF Micro (RFMD -2.8%), and OmniVision (OVTI -3.3%) are among the casualties, but they're far from alone. ANAD -6.2%. STM -5.7%. FSL -5%. ADI -4.5%. TXN -4.4%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Saturday, April 13, 8:25 AM When looking for dividend stocks, Kelley Wright believes a company isn't necessarily more attractive just because it pays a higher dividend. The key is when a stock's current yield is at the high end of the range of past yields; a strong balance sheet and a consistent pattern of higher earnings and rising dividends help too. Wright's top 10: APD, ADM, KO, COP, CVX, OXY, PEP, RS, TXN, WAG. 19 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, April 12, 2:33 PM H-P (HPQ) Moonshot servers featuring AMD's low-power Kyoto CPU will arrive in 2H13. H-P praises AMD's GPU expertise, which it thinks makes Kyoto well-suited for video/graphics-centric tasks. Also arriving in 2H are servers using Intel's (INTC) next-gen Avoton Atom CPUs - the first Moonshot systems use Centerton Atom CPUs. Meanwhile, ARM-based CPUs will be provided by Texas Instruments (TXN - PR), AppliedMicro (AMCC - PR), and Calxeda - H-P talks up the inclusion of a DSP in TI's Keystone ARM processor. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, April 4, 11:31 AM We're running out of stock. Corporate share buyback authorizations of $208B in Q1 are the strongest (as a % of capitalization) since Birinyi Associates began tracking the data in 1985. As a percent of capitalization, HD, UPS, AXP, and TXN - with authorizations of 13-18% of the float - lead the way. Next after AMEX in the recently green-lighted banks is BAC which plans to repurchase 3.8% of its shares. 7 Comments
- Wednesday, March 20, 10:29 AM More on Amazon: TechCrunch reports a $99 7" Kindle Fire HD is in production, and will ship this year. The device will reportedly have a 1280x800 resolution and use a Texas Instruments (TXN) OMAP chip, even though TI is gradually exiting the mobile processor space. It's not a stretch to assume the margins for such a device, which would allow Amazon to undercut Google's (GOOG) Nexus 7 (but perhaps not for long) and grow its emerging markets reach, will be negative. With such aggressive pricing, will IDC's tablet forecasts need to be raised again? 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, March 7, 5:01 PM Texas Instruments (TXN) favorably narrows its Q1 guidance. The chipmaker now expects revenue of $2.8B-$2.91B and EPS of $0.28-$0.32 vs. a prior forecast of $2.69B-$2.91B and $0.24-$0.32; the consensus stands at $2.8B and $0.31. The news seems priced in following a big rally, TXN -0.3% AH. CC underway (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, March 5, 5:09 PM Texas Instruments (TXN) is the latest ARM CPU supplier for H-P's (HPQ) Project Moonshot, which aims to create ultra-dense, low-power servers that will appeal to the Internet companies now driving industry growth. TI's chips will use ARM's (ARMH) high-end Cortex-A15 cores, and be based on its KeyStone architecture. The tie-up drives home TI's commitment to ARM processors, in spite of its retreat from the mobile processor space. (more on ARM servers) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 22, 5:04 PM Texas Instruments (TXN +5.2%) shareholders like getting their money back: shares closed near their 52-week high following news of a major dividend/buyback hike. Explaining the move, TI says it believes it can consistently turn 20%-25% of revenue into free cash flow, and return all of it (minus debt payments) to shareholders. On a CC (transcript), management stated its M&A strategy will be "biased towards analog and smaller acquisitions," and that it only plans to spent 4% of revenue on capex until annual sales hit $18B (they were at $12.8B in 2012). 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 21, 4:50 PM Texas Instruments Incorporated (TXN) declares $0.28/share quarterly dividend, 33% increase from prior dividend of $0.21. Forward yield 3.45%. For shareholders of record Apr. 30. Payable May 20. Ex-div date Apr. 26. The board authorized additional shares repurchase of $5B bringing the total to $8.4B.(PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, January 30, 1:33 PM Texas Instruments (TXN) and Globalfoundries have won the bidding to acquire 300mm chip manufacturing equipment from Taiwan's Powerchip, sources tell Digitimes. Look for TI to use the gear to grow its analog chip capacity - the company has been counting on superior economies of scale to gain share in this space. The sources note the sale could benefit the DRAM industry (and thus manufacturers such as Samsung and Micron) by further lowering capacity. (yesterday) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 29, 1:21 PM Texas Instruments (TXN -0.8%) and Globalfoundries have reportedly made offers to buy 300mm chip manufacturing equipment put on the block by struggling Taiwanese DRAM maker Powerchip. A slew of Taiwanese firms are also said to have placed bids. TI is no stranger to buying Asian chip manufacturing capacity on the cheap (I, II). Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 22, 5:28 PM Tech guidance roundup: 1) AMD expects Q1 revenue to fall 6%-12% Q/Q; this implies revenue of $1.02B-$1.09B, below a $1.11B consensus. 2) Texas Instruments (TXN) expects Q1 revenue of $2.69B-$2.91B and EPS of $0.24-$0.32, largely below a consensus of $2.89B and $0.34. 3) RF Micro (RFMD) expects FQ4 revenue of $250M-$255M and EPS of $0.04-$0.05, largely above a consensus of $227.5M and $0.04. AMD +1.6% AH. TXN -0.6%. RFMD +2.3%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
