- Thursday, June 13, 1:47 PM An InvenSense (INVN +2.4%) motion sensor, a Synaptics (SYNA +0.8%) touch controller, Elpida (MU +2.1%) mobile DRAM, and 16GB of SanDisk (SNDK +0.1%) NAND flash were found during a Google Glass teardown. A Texas Instruments (TXN) app processor was also found, but given TI's planned exit from the mobile processor space, Google will likely go elsewhere for future models. Over the near-term, Glass volumes should amount to a small fraction of those seen for high-volume smartphones, but that could change if prices come down and privacy concerns are addressed. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 11, 11:42 AM "We were somewhat surprised by the fact that TI did not raise its guidance range," says Goldman's James Covello in response to Texas Instruments' (TXN -2.6%) mid-quarter update. Recent guidance from Microchip, Avago, and Semtech suggests to Goldman "trends in the industrial and automotive markets have continued to improve," and that fact TI's guidance still didn't rise leads it to think it's getting hit by both its wireless chip wind-down and share losses at its National Semi analog chip unit. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, June 10, 4:42 PM Texas Instruments (TXN) uses its mid-quarter update to narrow its guidance ranges. The chipmaker now expects Q2 revenue of $2.99B-$3.11B and EPS of $0.39-$0.43; prior guidance was for $2.93B-$3.17B and $0.37-$0.45, and the consensus stands at $3.06B and $0.42. Shares -1.7% AH, CC at 5PM ET (webcast). Comment! [Tech, Earnings, Breaking News]
- Tuesday, June 4, 12:05 PM Chip stocks outperform (SOXX +1.4%) after Microchip raises its June quarter guidance, and STMicroelectronics raises its 2013 guidance. Microchip rivals Texas Instruments (TXN +2.6%), Atmel (ATML +3.4%), and Freescale (FSL +2.1%) are among the winners, as is STMicroelectronics rival NXP (NXPI +3.6%). Also, Altera (ALTR +2.5%) is rallying with the help of an upgrade to Buy from Argus, and Intersil (ISIL +2.4%) is benefiting from a bullish coverage launch from Piper. Some chip ETFs: SMH, XSD, PSI, SOXL, USD, SOXS, SSG. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 29, 6:41 PM As part of Intel's (INTC) efforts to lower power consumption, the chip giant's Haswell CPUs will sport integrated voltage regulators, a move that could eliminate the need for as many as 7 third-party chips. That could spell trouble for ON Semi (ONNN), Intersil (ISIL), and Texas Instruments (TXN), believed by Gartner to be the three largest vendors in an Intel CPU voltage regulator market worth an estimated $325M. Intel officially launches Haswell on Monday; look for Apple to launch Haswell-powered MacBooks at its June 10-14 WWDC conference. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 28, 9:30 AM Texas Instruments (TXN) catches an upgrade to Buy from Drexel Hamilton; the firm is raising its PT to $40 from $32. Shares +1.1%, following equity futures higher. They're up 19% YTD, aided by a giant dividend/buyback hike in February. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, April 22, 4:51 PM More on Texas Instruments: Q2 guidance is for revenue of $2.93B-$3.17B and EPS of $0.37-$0.45, in-line with a consensus of $3.04B and $0.38. 2013 R&D guidance is lowered to $1.5B from a prior $1.6B. Q1 analog sales -2% Y/Y (also -2% as Q4) and 58% of total, hurt by Silicon Valley Analog (formerly National Semi). Embedded processing +4% (+6% in Q4) and 19% of total, boosted by microcontroller sales. Other (inc. slumping/discontinued wireless ops) -24%. R&D spend -18% Y/Y (wireless restructuring), SG&A -1%. $679M in buybacks. CC at 5:30PM ET (webcast).TXN +1.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Monday, April 22, 4:32 PM Texas Instruments (TXN): Q1 EPS of $0.32 in-line. Revenue of $2.88B beats by $0.03B. Shares +1.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move, Tech]

- Wednesday, April 17, 12:26 PM Chip stocks have a rough day (SOXX -2.8%) following Cirrus Logic's warning, light guidance from Linear Technology (LLTC -4.6%) to go with a Q1 beat - Linear sees 1%-4% Q/Q revenue growth for calendar Q2, below a 4.7% consensus - and ho-hum Q1 results/Q2 guidance from Intel. Apple suppliers Broadcom (BRCM -4%), Avago (AVGO -5.5%), STMicroelectronics (STM -6.7%), NXP (NXPI -7%), RF Micro (RFMD -2.8%), and OmniVision (OVTI -3.3%) are among the casualties, but they're far from alone. ANAD -6.2%. STM -5.7%. FSL -5%. ADI -4.5%. TXN -4.4%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Saturday, April 13, 8:25 AM When looking for dividend stocks, Kelley Wright believes a company isn't necessarily more attractive just because it pays a higher dividend. The key is when a stock's current yield is at the high end of the range of past yields; a strong balance sheet and a consistent pattern of higher earnings and rising dividends help too. Wright's top 10: APD, ADM, KO, COP, CVX, OXY, PEP, RS, TXN, WAG. 19 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, April 12, 2:33 PM H-P (HPQ) Moonshot servers featuring AMD's low-power Kyoto CPU will arrive in 2H13. H-P praises AMD's GPU expertise, which it thinks makes Kyoto well-suited for video/graphics-centric tasks. Also arriving in 2H are servers using Intel's (INTC) next-gen Avoton Atom CPUs - the first Moonshot systems use Centerton Atom CPUs. Meanwhile, ARM-based CPUs will be provided by Texas Instruments (TXN - PR), AppliedMicro (AMCC - PR), and Calxeda - H-P talks up the inclusion of a DSP in TI's Keystone ARM processor. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, April 4, 11:31 AM We're running out of stock. Corporate share buyback authorizations of $208B in Q1 are the strongest (as a % of capitalization) since Birinyi Associates began tracking the data in 1985. As a percent of capitalization, HD, UPS, AXP, and TXN - with authorizations of 13-18% of the float - lead the way. Next after AMEX in the recently green-lighted banks is BAC which plans to repurchase 3.8% of its shares. 7 Comments
- Wednesday, March 20, 10:29 AM More on Amazon: TechCrunch reports a $99 7" Kindle Fire HD is in production, and will ship this year. The device will reportedly have a 1280x800 resolution and use a Texas Instruments (TXN) OMAP chip, even though TI is gradually exiting the mobile processor space. It's not a stretch to assume the margins for such a device, which would allow Amazon to undercut Google's (GOOG) Nexus 7 (but perhaps not for long) and grow its emerging markets reach, will be negative. With such aggressive pricing, will IDC's tablet forecasts need to be raised again? 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, March 7, 5:01 PM Texas Instruments (TXN) favorably narrows its Q1 guidance. The chipmaker now expects revenue of $2.8B-$2.91B and EPS of $0.28-$0.32 vs. a prior forecast of $2.69B-$2.91B and $0.24-$0.32; the consensus stands at $2.8B and $0.31. The news seems priced in following a big rally, TXN -0.3% AH. CC underway (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
