- Wednesday, June 19, 1:44 AM Boeing's (BA) 787 has suffered another hiccup after an apparent problem with an oil filter in one of the plane's engines forced a United Airlines (UAL) Dreamliner flying to Tokyo from Denver to make an unscheduled landing in Seattle. There was no indication that the problem was related to the 787's revamped battery, but it is the latest of several glitches to plague the jet since commercial flights resumed recently. 2 Comments
- Tuesday, June 18, 5:51 AM Paris Air Show: As widely expected, Boeing (BA) has officially launched the 787-10, a stretched version of the Dreamliner with up to 330 seats, and said it already has orders for 102 jets from five buyers (PR). One of these is United Airlines (UAL), which will be the launch customer in North America with a booking for 20 aircraft, including an upgrade on 10 existing 787 orders. Air Lease Corp. (AL) has booked 30 (PR). Meanwhile, Ryanair's (RYAAY) shareholders have approved the carrier's acquisition of 175 Boeing 737 aircraft in a deal worth $15.6B at list prices. 2 Comments [Top Stories]
- Monday, June 17, 5:11 AM United Continental Holdings (UAL) is finally enjoying some smooth flying after an "awful" 2012, CEO Jeff Smisek has said. Last year, the carrier lost $723M and suffered a wave of canceled and delayed flights, partly as an after-effect of the 2010 merger between United Airlines and Continental. "For far too long, we've operated this company as an airline. Airlines don't make money," Smisek added. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 12, 10:59 AM The airline sector saw a drop in unit revenue during May even with a decent load factor increase of 70 bps to 84.4% during the month. Unit revenue were down for all major carriers - except Delta Air Line (DAL) with a 0.5% gain and JetBlue (JBLU) with a 1% increase. May unit revenue growth scorecard: US Airways (LCC) -1%; United Continental (UAL) 0% to -1%; Allegiant (ALGT) -8.2% to -8.6%; Alaska Airlines (ALK) -3.3%; American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) -1.8%; Southwest Airlines (LUV) -2%. 5 Comments [Consumer]

After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: EQIS +6%. GFA +5%. VWO +4%. DLR +3%. HILL +2%.
After-hours top losers: MIND -16%. UAL -7%. SQNM -4%. PBI -3%. ADBE -3%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, June 7, 11:24 AM Airline stocks move higher with more rosy forecasts on business travel demand and a Goldman Sachs upgrade on United Continental helping to tip sentiment. The general take on the sector - and UAL in particular - is that many of the negatives have been factored into share price. Advancers: UAL +5.4%, DAL +3.6%, JBLU +3.1%, LCC +1.3%, ALK +3.1%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 4, 2:12 PM United Airlines (UAL -0.1%) announces a couple of new subscription programs under which travelers can prepay for an entire year of baggage fees ($349) or to have the option to reserve seats ($499) in the leggy Economy Plus section of its planes for a year. The subscription packages are unique to the industry and has analysts scratching their heads on if interest will be high. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 4, 12:20 PM United Airlines (UAL) commits to buy at least 15M gallons of cleaner-burning renewable jet fuel from a Los Angeles-based refinery, marking a potentially major breakthrough in the commercial aviation industry’s quest to cut carbon dioxide emissions. United is planning to use the biofuel on flights out of its L.A. hub, with supplies coming from AltAir Fuels via a retrofitted petroleum refinery, beginning next year. 2 Comments [Consumer, Energy]
- Tuesday, June 4, 9:51 AM Airline stocks trade higher on optimism that the industry will see rising profit margins. A slip in crude oil prices isn't hurting the cause. Advancers: UAL +2.8%, DAL +2.3%, LCC +2.0%, ALK +2.0%, JBLU +1.5%. (Previous: IATA boosts forecasts) 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, June 3, 9:31 AM IATA boosts its 2013 profit forecast for the airline industry to $12.7B from $10.6B previously (and up 67% from 2012) thanks to better traffic and lower-than-expected fuel prices. The industry load factor is expected to hit a record 80.3% this year, 6 points higher than the previous record set in 2006. At the same time the group reminds of wafer-thin profit margins for many passenger airlines and notes air cargo market growth has stagnated. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 29, 5:03 AM The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by United Airlines (UAL) over a lower-court ruling that an employer should offer a job to a newly disabled worker even if a more qualified person has applied for the position. The verdict allows the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to proceed with a lawsuit accusing United Airlines of violating laws related to disabled employees, while it may well have wider implications also. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 23, 7:02 AM European regulators accept the concessions made by United Continental (UAL), Lufthansa (DLAKY.PK), and Air Canada (AIDIF.PK) on their existing agreement to share transatlantic routes. The carriers will give up airport slots in Frankfurt and New York City as part of the negotiated arrangement to open up competition. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 21, 6:58 AM United Continental (UAL) says it signed a capacity agreement with Skywest (SKYW) to operate 40 Embraer 175 aircraft under the United Express brand name. The deal is in addition to previous Embraer 175 jets ordered for United Express. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, May 20, 11:21 AM Senator Charles Schumer wants airlines to reverse their steep increase on flight change fees after Delta Air Lines (DAL -0.5%), United Airlines (UAL -1.1%), American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK), and U.S. Airways (LCC -0.6%) all bumped off their charge to $200 from $150. Last year, the top airlines collected $2.6B in reservation change fees which accounted for a decent portion of the overall growth in the industry. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, May 20, 7:38 AM The 787 Dreamliner is back in the air in the U.S. as the CEOs of Boeing (BA) and United Airlines (UAL) fly with 250 other passengers from Houston to Chicago aboard the jet. 3 Comments
- Friday, May 17, 11:23 AM United Airlines (UAL +0.1%) debuts a loyalty program aimed at business travelers, marking something of a first for the industry. More expansive than strictly a miles program, the MileagePlus Small Business Network will reward customers who buy goods and services from approved vendors and will include an auction program. Comment! [Consumer]
