- Thursday, November 22, 2012, 5:43 AM Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein yesterday dismissed a lawsuit claiming that United Airlines (UAL) was responsible for the collapse of a third World Trade Center building in the September 11 attacks. The suit was brought by Larry Silverstein, the leaseholder of 7 World Trade Center, who said lapses in airport security at a checkpoint that United helped operate allowed the hijackers to crash an American Airlines jet into the complex. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 7:41 AM The nagging computer issues at United Air Lines (UAL) could cause the carrier more much than the fees for booking stranded customers on other flights. Analysts say an avoidance factor could already be in play with business travelers who are well-aware that United sees more computer failures than rivals. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 10:44 AM United Air Lines (UAL -1.6%) is hit with another major computer outage, marking its third significant loss of network functions since June. According to reports, UAL passengers at several major airports are currently stranded. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 8:54 AM U.S. airlines face the most serious shortage of pilots in over forty years, according to the WSJ. New federal mandates and a wave of pilots about to hit retirement age are setting up to create a "crisis" in the industry with no quick-fix solution in place, warns insiders. Look for regional carriers to feel the sharpest sting if the pilot shortage develops in short order. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 2:28 PM Airline stocks rally as a number of oil analysts say they see further downward price action ahead with U.S. inventories and production high. The sector is also getting a little boost with New York-region airports recovering quickly from the latest winter storm. Advancers: JBLU +3.5%, DAL +2.6%, UAL +2.4%, LUV +1.9%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 4:32 AM Superstorm Sandy hurt United Continental's (UAL) profit by $35M in October and revenue by $90M after the airline canceled 5,300 flights during the month. Traffic -3.3%, capacity -4.4%, combined load factor rose to 82.9% from 82%, and passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM) +0.5%-1.5%. (PR) 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 8:43 AM Boeing (BA -1.6%) may not be ready to start selling a new version of the 777 until the end of 2013, a year later than expected, Reuters reports. That would mean a launch year of 2021-2022 and could prompt customers such as United Airlines (UAL) to buy Airbus' latest A350 model, which is due to enter service in 2017. But with A350-1000 sales still fairly sedate, Boeing might be able to afford to stay its hand. 1 Comment
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 8:08 AM Major airline are canceling flights in and out of the New York area ahead of a major winter storm bearing down on the region. Over a thousand flights scheduled for today and tomorrow have already been cancelled. The bigger issue: On the heels of Hurricane Sandy, a second storm will further disrupt the Q4 profitability of major carriers - although some industry loss estimates came in too high. Wolfe Trahan pegs the number at $190M with some sales made back up on rescheduled trips - instead of the +$500M loss projection getting bandied around last week. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, November 2, 2012, 8:38 AM Airlines continue to make progress in returning to a normal flying schedule as major airports in the New York region resume operations. While broad estimates on the cost of Hurricane Sandy on the industry range from $500M to over a billion dollars, the trick for traders will be to compute which carriers took the biggest hits from the ripple effect of cancellations that shook out beyond East Coast airports. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 9:32 AM Flight cancellations start to head back down after both domestic and international carriers saw an ugly week with major airports closed. The consensus opinion analysts seem to be forming is carriers will see Q4 numbers trimmed due to the storm, but any sustained impact on earnings won't be meaningful. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 8:33 AM United Continental (UAL) is in discussions to buy Airbus A350-1000 jets to replace aging Boeing (BA) 747 planes, Bloomberg reports. "This will be a big wake-up call for Boeing," says aviation expert Richard Aboulafia. "There’s a big market emerging for the next-generation of the 777-300ER, and so far, Airbus is the only manufacturer with a firmly-launched new product." Comment!
- Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 7:37 AM The number of flights canceled due to Hurricane Sandy soars past the 14K mark. Philadelphia International and LaGuardia are the two airports with the most cancellations today, while Washington DC-area airports and Boston Logan International are picking up the pace of flights. Combined losses for domestic carriers has been pegged as high as $450M. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, October 29, 2012, 2:36 PM The number of flights canceled due to Hurricane Sandy soars past 10K with major airports in Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York nearly crippled for the time being. CNBC reports the storm could cost the industry over $450M even though it struck at a relatively low period for travel. (Live flight tracker) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, October 29, 2012, 3:43 AM Hurricane Sandy has caused the grounding of over 6,800 commercial flights so far. The cancellations are likely to hurt Q4 earnings, says consultant R.W. Mann & Co, although the airlines could make up some of the revenue as passengers reschedule flights. Affected carriers include AMR, United Continental (UAL), Delta (DAL), JetBlue (JBLU), US Airways (LCC). 1 Comment [U.S. Economy, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 7:42 AM More on United Continental Holdings' (UAL) Q3: Passenger revenue fell 2.6% Y/Y to $8.8B with Atlantic and Latin America routes the hardest hit. Cites "tough operational challenges" during the quarter. Average fuel price per gallon was $313.4, inclusive of the impact of hedges. Shares -1.8% premarket. (PR) 2 Comments [Consumer, Earnings]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 7:37 AM United Continental Holdings (UAL): Q3 EPS of $1.35 misses by $0.12. Revenue of $9.91B (-2.6% Y/Y) misses by $60M. Shares -1.8% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, On the Move]

DAL, LUV, UAL are hedged for jet fuel in the 40-50% range. Singapore Air is only 20% hedged; earnings nose dived as a result. $120 in 2012 - View all 0 replies
