Exploring Joel Greenblatt’s Magic Formula for Picking Value Stocks [view article]
The www.magicformulafunds..../ site says "MagicFormulaInve... while looking great and easy, is simply not accurate. Professor Greenblatt’s back tests provided accurate results, however, the person responsible for maintaining the website simply isn’t doing it right.Stocks that should be ranked 356 or 253 are showing up in the top 30 as the website doesn’t use an accurate data source. United Online, Inc. Q1 2008 Earnings Call Transcript [view article]
As a current FTD/Interflora member I would like to offer a comment which may be of use to you. As a member florist I have been squeezed as tightly as I can be over the past few years to the point where I can not sustain it anymore. We are currently finding the margins and criteria we are expected to work with IMPOSSIBLE! There is no room for anymore discounting or revenue generating from the member florist and any plan for this should be seriously reconsidered. There are 2 possible outcomes for the member florist if United Online have plans to revenue generate from us: 1) we will all go out of business because there is no more revenue to give you 2) we will be forced to leave and find an alternative way to make at least one buck. The bottom line is you must allow for this in your plans or you will have no members to reap any revenue from or anywhere to place the masses of orders you plan to generate. Wayne, you haven't been paying attention. Earthlink cut it's entire direct marketing organization last fall to - as you say - harvest the business. If you wonder why the stock is on the rise, it's because the company has wacked so many employees and products that it is now operating with an attractive cash flow and a only a small skeleton crew. Could Earthlink and United Online Still “Dial up” Big Profits? [view article]
I have Earthlink DSL and have not been disappointed. I'd like to see them come up with a package that would provide a high speed add-on to the free wireless access that is popping up everywhere, but if they have one I haven't heard about it. ReplyMulligan
Could Earthlink and United Online Still “Dial up” Big Profits? [view article]
Hey guys,You're right, I misspoke, I was mainly directing that comment towards United but it certainly came out wrong (I think I was looking at ELNK's annual data as I wrote this blog entry). UNTD hasn't done much in reducing its SG&A, EarthLink clearly has over the last several quarters. My apologies for stating otherwise.
However, I still think that from a competitive perspective their moves have been fairly weak and haven't produced any meaningful results. It's clear both companies are trying to diversify their businesses...which one will successfully do so is the real question.
Do you think high-speed is enough to keep EarthLink in the black? Their bottom line has improved due to the cost reductions but their top-line has been getting weaker.
Thoughts?

Yeah, I agree, Wayne didn't do much homework on this article. ELNK has cut way back on marketing and has laid off more than half of its staff. He also isn't aware that much of ELNK's business is in broadband access these days. But these things aside, nice article - to even remember that UNTD and ELNK still exist. What ELNK should do now is start paying out a big dividend like UNTD does. At least return some value to the shareholders. ReplyCould Earthlink and United Online Still “Dial up” Big Profits? ELNK is a loser and has been for many years. It is what I call a long term buy.lol lolI bought in '98 for $37.20 & $41.50. Reply

Somebody just doesn't do their homework...I work at Earthlink and there was a massive layoff in the dialup portion of the business, along with an almost complete drop of marketing involving the dialup. If he would have checked the financials and the latest buzz...Earthlink has increased it's guidance on earnings. Did this guy do any research besides reading 1-2 year old magazine articles? If u like long term try ELNK. I have had it for about 10 yrs and haven't made a buck yet. ReplyUnited Online's Future Looks Rosy - Barron's [view article]

I've been using Juno because it's cheap, but the service is crappy with frequent disconnects.
I'm ready to go to DSL, I can't believe dial up has a future. Reply

classmates.com has a complaint list a mile long:www.consumeraffairs.co...
They apparently execute standard scams--trick people into signing up for free trials, then make it difficult or impossible to cancel, and create automatic monthly charge to credit card; no way to contact the company about problems; automatic monthly charges that continue indefinitely after cancellation, and on and on. (None of this has happened to me, personally, as I would never do a free trial after what I read.) If this is how they treat the customers, why should I believe the shareholders will be treated any better? Reply
