Friday, January 11, 10:39 AM Unwired Planet (UPIP +34.4%), formerly Openwave, soars after buying 2,185 patents and applications related to mobile networks from Ericsson (ERIC). UPIP will also receive another 100 "patent assets" annually from 2014-2018. Ericsson has the right to 20% of the first $100M in revenue produced by the patents, 50% of the next $400M, and 70% of anything beyond. Friday, February 17, 2012, 9:26 AM Openwave (OPWV) +11.4% following a Wedbush note speculating "patent troll" Acacia Research (ACTG) might soon make a bid for the wireless IP holder. The firm notes Acacia recently raised $225M in a stock offering, and has said it's exploring a major acquisition. Wedbush estimates Openwave's patent portfolio is worth roughly $100M, and speculates Google (GOOG), which wasn't sued, could be in talks with the company.
