ETF Losers: GAZ -4.5%. UNG -3.6%. FXA -3.0%. EWY -2.7%. EWA -2.7%. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, May 9, 11:00 AM Global X sets for May 15 reverse splits on 6 ETFs, some - but not all of which - have dropped sharply in value over the last year: 1-for-4 on the Gold Explorers ETF (GLDX), 1-for-3 on the Uranium ETF (URA), 1-for-3 on the Junior Miners ETF (JUNR), 1-for-2 on the Argentina 20 ETF (ARGT), 1-for-2 on the China Materials ETF (CHIM), and 1-for-2 on the Pure Gold Miners ETF (GGGG). Comment!
- Wednesday, May 1, 9:45 AM Cameco's (CCJ -4.4%) 93% profit plunge in Q1 is the result of 38% lower uranium sales volumes and a 1% drop in realized prices (URA). Expects the market to remain in wait-and-see mode while it searches for catalysts such as Japanese reactor restarts. Sees full-year uranium production of 23.3 lbs. and sales volumes of 31M-33M lbs., though Q1 sales were just 5.1M lbs. Comment! [Energy, Earnings, On the Move]

Friday, April 5, 5:00 PM
The week's ETF movers - Gainers: TLT +4.3%. WPS +3.7%. UNG +2.6%. VNQ +2.4%. IYR +1.8%.
ETF Losers: GDXJ -8.0%. GDX -7.4%. URA -6.7%. EWY -6.2%. REMX -5.3%. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, March 18, 12:02 PM Large uranium miners team up with the Australian government and two Canadian provinces to press Canada to change Cold War era policy restricting foreign ownership to just 49% of uranium mines. "It's such an absurd situation," says Paladin Energy MD John Borshoff ... "an anachronism." URA -36% Y/Y. 1 Comment [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Monday, March 11, 3:15 PM Cameco (CCJ +2.2%) has hired Goldman Sachs and another unnamed bank to advise it on exploring a potential bid for a stake in U.K.-based uranium enrichment specialist Urenco, Sky News reports. The U.K. government, co-owners of Urenco with the German and Dutch governments, had expressed interest in a possible sale of its interest, which could be worth as much as £2B. Comment! Friday, March 1, 5:20 PM
The week's ETF movers - Gainers: VXX +8.32%. GAZ +5.35%. UNG +3.87. WPS +2.85%. EWJ +1.78%.
ETF Losers: TAN -8.17%. EPI -4.36%. URA -4.13%. GDXJ -3.70%. BNO -3.21%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, February 26, 3:57 PM PowerShares has shuttered 13 ETFs, representing less than 1% of the issuer's AUM, as of today's close. Affected funds follow (with competing funds in parentheses): PIC (KIE, IAK, KBWP, KBWI), PYH, PJB (IAT, KBE, KRE, RKH, QABA, KRU, KRS, KBWR), PSTL (SLX), PLK, PWND (FAN), PMA, PKOL (KOL), PKN (NLR, NUCL, URA), PTO, PAO, PCA and CVRT. (pdf) Comment!
- Wednesday, February 13, 7:35 AM Japanese utilities are stepping up uranium imports on hope the government will allow more shuttered nuclear reactors to restart, according to Cameco (CCJ) CEO Tim Gitzel. It's not wishful thinking, says Raymond James' David Sadowski. Big consumers, the government, utilities, and even townspeople close to the plants are clamoring to get moving. Cameco makes up 20.4% of the URA ETF. 1 Comment [Global & FX, Commodities, Energy]
- Wednesday, February 6, 9:56 AM The real deterrent to nuclear power: Plants burn through copious quantities of cash long before they consume even a pound of uranium. That handicap was laid bare yet again as Duke Energy (DUK) decided to retire its Crystal River plant in Florida, and Centrica pulled out of a new U.K. project. Even in today's cheap-debt world, the economics of sinking billions into a new plant years before it generates revenue doesn't add up. 12 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, January 16, 2:49 PM Among the Fission Energy assets being acquired by Denison (DNN +3.4%) is a 60% stake in the Waterbury Lake uranium project, part of a deposit attached to Rio Tinto’s (RIO -1.9%) Roughrider deposit - which Cantor Fitzgerald says "ties a neat bow on top of Denison for a potential takeout offer" from RIO. The analyst also considers Cameco (CCJ -1.2%) a potential source of a competing offer for Fission. Comment! [Commodities, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, January 14, 8:22 AM Canadian miner Uranium One (SXRZF.PK) strikes a deal to sell itself to its controlling Russian shareholder AMRZ, which already owns 51.4% of shares, for $1.3B. Uranium One’s flagship assets are in Kazakhstan, where Russia is a key investor. Comment! [Commodities, M&A, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 5:41 PM The uranium business is still stuck in a rut more than 21 months after Fukushima, and there's little sign of a turnaround in 2013 as Japan's plans remain up in the air. Optimists point to long-term demand - 62 reactors under construction worldwide - and weak pricing and cost pressures that have ground many projects to a halt. Spot prices may have found a floor near $40/lb., but ~$60 is seen as breakeven. 2 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 8:18 AM BHP Billiton (BHP) shuts its uranium division, responsible for its Australian Olympic Dam copper and uranium mine, in a reflection of dimmed prospects for the nuclear fuel. BHP is now looking at less capital-intensive options for the mine, focusing on copper. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 3:31 PM Continuing to be stung by the low price of uranium, Paladin Energy (PALAF.PK -3.2%) freezes development, hoping to save $60M-$80M in fiscal years 2013 and 2014. "Today the price is not justifying any development (though) everybody realizes that, even with development, there's a supply crisis moving forward," says CEO John Borshoff. Uranium producer ETF: URA -18.2% YTD. 1 Comment [Global & FX, Commodities]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 8:07 AM Cameco (CCJ): Q3 EPS of $0.13 misses by $0.12. Revenue of $408M (-22.6% Y/Y) misses by $158M. Issues in-line guidance for FY12, sees revenues flat to -5% Y/Y to ~$2.23B-2.35B vs. $2.25B consensus estimate. (PR) Comment! [Energy, Earnings]
