Receiving little attention as a hedge against a possible U.S. default are high-yielding blue chip stocks, Mark Hulbert writes - odd, since such companies should provide a hedge in the event of a default, and excellent upside potential if default is averted. "Take Wal-Mart (WMT), for instance: Do you really think people will stop shopping in the event of a government default?"

A third of the way through Q2 reporting season, earnings for S&P 500 companies are their highest in four years, and they could be stronger in the second half. But the gains often have come from operations outside the U.S., with there is little indication that the strong results will jump-start the U.S. economy and get Americans back to work.

United Technologies (UTX) is thinking about a partial sale of its rocket-engine business, though formal talks aren't yet under way with any potential bidders. Jim Maser, head of the company's Rocketdyne unit, says asset sales are being considered as part of a broader look at the unit's competitiveness.

United Technologies (UTX -1.9%) shares slide despite solid Q2 results and upward guidance, as AMR's big order for Boeing (BA +2.1%) and Airbus (EADSY.PK +4.1%) planes is viewed as a win for GE (GE +1.1%) and a potential loss for UTX. In its deal with Boeing, AMR chose to re-engineer the existing 737, which uses a GE-manufactured engine, rather than opt for something new.

The defense contractors on the job, Lockheed Martin (LMT -0.9%) and Pratt & Whitney (UTX -1.9%), will have to pick up the remaining part of the tab.

Strong results at companies from INTC to UTX ensured broad-based gains, particularly in techs and energy. Treasurys fell as investors shunned safety. Gold jumped to a record as the dollar slid. NYSE advancers led decliners more than three to one.
