- Thursday, May 23, 3:24 PM A group of major retailers (TGT, M, TJX, KSS) file a new lawsuit against Visa (V -1%) and MasterCard (MA -1.2%) over the interchange fees the payment companies charge as a sweeping $7.25B negotiated settlement on the issue appears in danger of crumbling. 6 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 21, 2:59 PM Battle back on: 19 retailers say they will opt out of a $7.25B settlement with Visa (V +0.2%) and MasterCard (MA +0.7%) over interchange fees and will consider additional legal action against the companies. The highly-anticipated move from the heavyweight retailers (WMT, GPS, COST, NKE) comes about a week before a court deadline in the case. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 14, 6:53 AM Visa (V) offers to cap inter-bank credit card fees on cross-border and domestic transactions in Europe at 0.3% in an effort to appease the European Commission. Visa Europe says it will also reform its rules to help open up competition. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, May 13, 10:29 AM Visa (V) announces new capabilities for Visa Offers including more points and discounts that can be earned at the point of checkout by enrolled consumers. The company is attempting to be at the forefront of technology which allows retailers and issuers to use real-time messaging capabilities to reward and engage loyal customers. Comment! [Consumer]
- Saturday, May 4, 3:52 PM Barron's is out with its list of the 500 financially strongest companies as ranked after a rigorous cash and sales analysis. A quick filter on the list shows a good chunk of the names trade with a single-digit price to earnings ratio including Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT). Despite all the buzz about booming auto sales in the U.S. and China, concerns about growth for Goodyear's products in other regions of the globe have lowered expectations. But with auto sale estimates for full-year being taken higher, Goodyear could see enough consistent revenue growth to justify a higher trading multiple. - Wednesday, May 1, 4:10 PM Visa (V): FQ2 EPS of $1.92 beats by $0.11. Revenue of $3B (+15% Y/Y) beats by $150M. Shares +2.7% AH. (PR) 2 Comments [Consumer, Earnings, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, April 24, 7:29 PM Visa Inc (V) declares $0.33/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 0.79%. For shareholders of record May 17. Payable June 04. Ex-div date May 15. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Friday, April 12, 7:14 AM Sterne Agee downgrades several payments companies and removes their price targets with competition in the sector increasing. Fiserv (FISV), MasterCard (MA), Visa (V), and Euronet Worldwide (EEFT) are all taken down to a Neutral rating from their previous perch of Buy. 1 Comment [Consumer, Financials]
- Thursday, March 21, 12:31 PM Visa (V) has no plans to start charging a digital wallet fee at his time, says global product chief Jim McCarthy. The remarks follow comments from CEO Charlie Scharf about a wallet fee being "totally appropriate," and appear to be helping eBay (EBAY +0.8%) outperform. Yesterday, Jefferies argued MasterCard's fee has been priced into eBay's guidance. It thinks a 20-25 bps Mastercard fee would have a $0.03-$0.04 impact on annual EPS, and that a similar Visa fee would hurt EPS by $0.07-$0.08. 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Financials]
- Thursday, March 21, 10:01 AM Visa (V) CEO Charlie Scharf suggests his company plans to join MasterCard in placing fresh transaction fees on PayPal (EBAY) and other online payment services deemed to be digital wallets. "I think it is totally appropriate to do that." Wedbush's Gil Luria isn't surprised. "This is a fully functioning duopoly. When one does something, the other one follows suit." Concerns about fresh fees from transaction processors have already pressured eBay shares. 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Financials]
- Wednesday, March 20, 8:52 AM Visa (V) says it signed on Overstock.com (OSTK) as a new merchant that will use its V.me e-commerce checkout solution. The company says it now has 35 online merchants signed up for the digital wallet service with billion-dollar retailer Overstock.com being the crown jewel so far. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, March 20, 3:24 AM The European banks that own Visa Europe are reportedly considering exercising a put option to sell the company to Visa (V) in a deal that would be worth $3-$11B, depending on various factors. A transaction would add scale to Visa and enable it to enter new markets, although the company would also be exposed to Europe's wretched economy and its regulations, while the selling banks could set up a rival company. Comment! [Financials, Top Stories, M&A]
- Monday, March 18, 5:16 PM A Nomura note predicting higher card fees for PayPal (previous) helped eBay (EBAY -0.6%) make fresh 2013 lows. "Payment networks are taking the gloves off," writes Nomura. With PayPal's rapid growth and offline expansion efforts making it a bigger rival to Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA), "the incumbents will do everything in their power to prevent PayPal from riding on their rails without extracting a toll." Evercore thinks a new MasterCard fee for online payments services could be aimed at getting service providers to share more transaction info. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Financials]
- Friday, March 1, 3:52 PM JPMorgan's partnership with Visa (V) is viewed as a slight negative for MasterCard (MA), says Sterne, Agee, which sees MasterCard maybe responding by tightening a relationship with one if its big issuers such as Citigroup (C). For Visa, Sterne says it's a smart move locking down a large customer for 10 years, and preventing Chase from working with a competing network. 1 Comment [Financials]
- Friday, March 1, 8:36 AM Argus takes its rating on Visa (V) down to Hold on a valuation call. V -0.9% premarket. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 26, 10:27 AM More from JPMorgan's investor day (previous): The bank says its bid for AMEX (AXP) customers is paying off, with a 2.1% increase in card sales over the last 2-years vs. just 1.3% for AMEX. JPM also announces a joint venture with Visa (V) to build its own payment network. Comment! [Financials]
