- Thursday, June 13, 5:47 PM Visa (V) is suing Wal-Mart (WMT) to stop the retail giant from seeking more damages, rather than accept a $7.25B settlement Visa and MasterCard (MA) agreed to for card interchange fees. Wal-Mart was one of 19 retailers that said last month it would opt out of the settlement, arguing it would "allow credit card companies and big banks to perpetuate an unfair and broken system that costs all consumers." 10 Comments [Consumer, Financials]
- Monday, June 10, 10:49 AM Visa (V +0.9%) gets a boost from a price target hike at Stifel Nicolaus (Buy). "Investors are underestimating the magnitude of the payments growth opportunity that still remains," analyst Christopher Brendler says, following last week's investor day (CC transcript). Price target to $205 from $192. Comment!
- Friday, June 7, 3:48 AM More on NSA tracking: the agency reportedly monitors call data from AT&T (T) and Sprint (S), as well as from Verizon (VZ) (as reported yesterday). Together, the service providers have 314.6M wirelesss and landline accounts. The NSA's operations also encompass purchase information from unnamed credit-card providers. 17 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Thursday, June 6, 9:29 AM Visa (V) says U.S. payments growth was 12% in May with debit transactions increasing slightly faster than credit transactions. Cross border volume growth for the month was 11%, just a shade under April's mark. The company is in the middle of making its Investor Day presentation with early indications that previous guidance is being affirmed. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 5, 3:03 PM Visa (V -1.6%) says it has three new deals with mobile point-of-sale providers in its back pocket to help it provide merchants with more wireless payment solutions. Though seemingly in competition with mobile POS leader Square, Visa is also an early round investor in the company. 2 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, May 29, 6:05 AM Federal prosecutors have indicted the operators of a Costa Rica-based digital currency exchange called Liberty Reserve (LR) for facilitating the laundering of over $6B in illicit cash. LR users were able to transfer money using Western Union (WU), MoneyGram (MGI), Visa (V), MasterCard (MA), American Express (AXP), and CitiBank (C). Given the crackdown on compliance policies at banks such as HSBC, questions now might be asked whether those companies have any culpability. 5 Comments [Financials, Top Stories]
- Sunday, May 26, 3:16 AM Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) have sued trade groups and retailers that have rejected a $7.25B agreement over credit-card swipe charges, with the firms looking to prevent the defendants from seeking antitrust damages for the fees. The lawsuit on Friday came a day after 17 retailers, including Target (TGT) and Macy's (M), sued Visa and Mastercard over the charges. 4 Comments [Consumer, Financials]
- Thursday, May 23, 3:24 PM A group of major retailers (TGT, M, TJX, KSS) file a new lawsuit against Visa (V -1%) and MasterCard (MA -1.2%) over the interchange fees the payment companies charge as a sweeping $7.25B negotiated settlement on the issue appears in danger of crumbling. 6 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 21, 2:59 PM Battle back on: 19 retailers say they will opt out of a $7.25B settlement with Visa (V +0.2%) and MasterCard (MA +0.7%) over interchange fees and will consider additional legal action against the companies. The highly-anticipated move from the heavyweight retailers (WMT, GPS, COST, NKE) comes about a week before a court deadline in the case. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 14, 6:53 AM Visa (V) offers to cap inter-bank credit card fees on cross-border and domestic transactions in Europe at 0.3% in an effort to appease the European Commission. Visa Europe says it will also reform its rules to help open up competition. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, May 13, 10:29 AM Visa (V) announces new capabilities for Visa Offers including more points and discounts that can be earned at the point of checkout by enrolled consumers. The company is attempting to be at the forefront of technology which allows retailers and issuers to use real-time messaging capabilities to reward and engage loyal customers. Comment! [Consumer]
- Saturday, May 4, 3:52 PM Barron's is out with its list of the 500 financially strongest companies as ranked after a rigorous cash and sales analysis. A quick filter on the list shows a good chunk of the names trade with a single-digit price to earnings ratio including Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT). Despite all the buzz about booming auto sales in the U.S. and China, concerns about growth for Goodyear's products in other regions of the globe have lowered expectations. But with auto sale estimates for full-year being taken higher, Goodyear could see enough consistent revenue growth to justify a higher trading multiple. - Wednesday, May 1, 4:10 PM Visa (V): FQ2 EPS of $1.92 beats by $0.11. Revenue of $3B (+15% Y/Y) beats by $150M. Shares +2.7% AH. (PR) 2 Comments [Consumer, Earnings, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, April 24, 7:29 PM Visa Inc (V) declares $0.33/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 0.79%. For shareholders of record May 17. Payable June 04. Ex-div date May 15. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Friday, April 12, 7:14 AM Sterne Agee downgrades several payments companies and removes their price targets with competition in the sector increasing. Fiserv (FISV), MasterCard (MA), Visa (V), and Euronet Worldwide (EEFT) are all taken down to a Neutral rating from their previous perch of Buy. 1 Comment [Consumer, Financials]
- Thursday, March 21, 12:31 PM Visa (V) has no plans to start charging a digital wallet fee at his time, says global product chief Jim McCarthy. The remarks follow comments from CEO Charlie Scharf about a wallet fee being "totally appropriate," and appear to be helping eBay (EBAY +0.8%) outperform. Yesterday, Jefferies argued MasterCard's fee has been priced into eBay's guidance. It thinks a 20-25 bps Mastercard fee would have a $0.03-$0.04 impact on annual EPS, and that a similar Visa fee would hurt EPS by $0.07-$0.08. 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Financials]
