Company Description
Vale S.A. are the second-largest metals and mining company in the world and the largest in the Americas, based on market capitalization. We are the world's largest producer of iron ore and iron ore pellets and the world's second-largest producer of nickel. We are one of the world's largest... More

- Wednesday, April 24, 7:58 PM More on Vale (VALE): Q1 misses on the top line but beats on a per share basis as its bottom line swings back to a profit on cost cuts and a lack of write-downs. Net profits were down 18% Y/Y, but the result beat the previous period, stemming seven straight quarters of declining profits. Slowing growth in China has weighed heavily on iron ore prices. But VALE embarked on a company-wide cost-cutting mission last year, and its austerity efforts appear to be bearing fruit, with operating costs and other expenses declining Y/Y. Shares +1% Y/Y. Comment! [Earnings, Commodities, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, April 24, 6:33 PM Vale (VALE): Q1 EPS of $0.62 beats by $0.06. Revenue of $11.1B misses by $1.B. Shares +1.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Thursday, February 28, 9:53 AM In spite of an EPS miss and $5.66B worth of mine write-downs, Vale (VALE +2.4%) is rising post-earnings, as investors focus on a revenue beat and cautiously optimistic commentary. The mining giant is confident it won't see a major slowdown in China, and expects the local steel market to grow moderately this year. Bulk materials and base metals revenue respectively fell 21% and 23% Y/Y thanks to price declines, and rising maritime freight expenses led cost of goods sold rose by $142M even after adjustments. Opex -2% Y/Y to $2.3B. CC at 10AM ET (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Commodities, Earnings]
- Wednesday, February 27, 5:46 PM Vale (VALE): Q4 EPS of $0.38 misses by $0.06. Revenue of $12B (+% Y/Y) beats by $0.8B. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 12:12 PM Vale (VALE +4%) rallies on better than expected Q3 EBITDA of $3.7B, helped by stronger iron ore sales volume and higher realized iron ore prices. But analysts are split on the stock: Credit Suisse thinks the current premium is unwarranted in the face of an uncertain macro recovery. Citi is more bullish, calling the Q3 beat the best since 2008, with both prices and costs better than expected. Comment! [Commodities, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 9:11 AM Vale (VALE) +4.3% premarket after Q3 earnings plunged 66% but operating revenues topped analysts’ estimates, signaling that efforts to cut costs and delay projects are paying off. The Brazilian miner is re-evaluating non-core assets and the market should expect the sale of some of them, CFO Luciano Siani Pires says. Comment! [Commodities, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 6:00 PM Vale (VALE) reports Q3 net profit of $1.67B, down 66% Y/Y from $4.94B as the global economic slowdown caused iron ore prices to tumble. Operating revenue fell 35% to $10.96B. The profit result was lower than expectations from analysts, who had forecast $1.8B; operating revenues topped estimates of $10.4B. Comment! [Commodities, Earnings]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 6:02 PM More on Vale (VALE): Q2 misses badly as net profit slides nearly 60% Y/Y as lower iron-ore prices offset record output. Operating revenue for the quarter also tumbled 21% to $12.2B. Shares -2% AH. 5 Comments [Commodities, Earnings, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 5:42 PM Vale (VALE): Q2 EPS of $0.52 may not be comparable to $0.75 consensus estimate. Revenue of $12.2B (-20.8% Y/Y) misses by $800M. Shares -1.5% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Commodities]
- Thursday, April 26, 2012, 1:05 AM Vale (VALE) Q1 net profit nearly halved to $3.83B from $6.83B the year before after slowing growth in China pushed down the price of ore. Heavy rains that curtailed production were also a factor. Net revenue was $11.05B, largely in-line with consensus and down 16% from the year before. Comment! [Earnings, Commodities]
- Thursday, February 16, 2012, 3:46 AM Vale (VALE): Q4 net profit -21% to $4.67B vs. consensus of $4.68B. Revenues -1.2% to $14.8B as higher volumes make up for 11% Y/Y fall in iron ore prices. Iron ore production +3.5% to 80.3M metric tons, produced record 311.8M in 2011, invested record $18B. Comment! [Earnings, Commodities]
- Friday, May 6, 2011, 7:36 AM Vale's (VALE +1.9%) Q1 2011 net profit jumped more than fourfold to a record $6.83B on the sale of assets and as heightened demand from China and India lifted iron-ore prices. Net sales doubled to $13.2B, with the firm also benefiting from increased output of nickel and copper. Comment! [Earnings, Commodities]

Chines33: The higher the Divy goes the more concerned I would become that it gets cut. Its best chance is to bounce somewhere in 14-16 area -
Energysystems: I believe the 2008 low will be tested. Stated as much on here a few months back. $BTU is also getting close to testing their 08 low too.
