The S&P Retail ETF (XRT) is up 1.1%, but might be doing better on the day if not for its heavy weighting currently into drugstore and grocery stocks. The bull theme on the sector is that incremental improvement in Europe is possible and that with the proper execution global sales can accelerate. The company says its wide diversity of brands allows it to weather the storm in Europe a bit better than peers. Sales gains at its outdoors sports-related segment offset a decline in its jeanswear segment.

    Retail stocks rally as investors gear up for tomorrow’s holiday sales reporting, with apparel chains and luxury names among the day's top performers. Ralph Lauren (RL +4.2%) leads the S&P 500; among other strong gainers are VFC +3.4%, GAP +2.6%, URBN +2.9%. "Indications are that volumes were up in December, so same-store sales figures will likely look good," Atlantic Equities says.

    VF Corp. (VFC +3.1%) jumps after Citigroup upgrades the stock to Buy from Neutral, hikes the price target to $157 from $137 and adds it to the firm's "top picks live" list. Citi cites "strong brands" and "secular growth opportunities" within the company's outdoor segment, plus wider margins as cotton prices come down next year. XRT +1.3%.

(VFC +5%) enjoys a boost from Bank of America, which upgrades its stock rating to Buy from Neutral on momentum in the retailer's higher-margin international and direct-to-consumer segments led by its North Face and Vans brands. VFC also could see greater-than-expected accretion from its recent acquisition of Timberland.

The firm believes consensus estimates for Deckers are conservative, and it's a fan of Wolverine's "breadth of product lines and geographic reach."

    VF Corp. (VFC -6.7%) says Q1 profit jumped 23%, raises 2011 guidance, and even finds customer acceptance of early clothing product price increases. But investors are wary of 24% inventory growth, even though it mostly reflects buying goods early to benefit from lower costs - mitigating cost-increase risk but increasing fashion risk.
