Monday, April 22, 3:59 PM VirnetX (VHC +3.7%) spiked in afternoon trading after filing a new infringement suit against Microsoft, with this one aimed against its Skype unit. VirnetX, which is suing in the same East Texas district in which it has filed suit against Apple and Cisco (with mixed results), alleges Skype (said to be uncovered by an existing licensing agreement between VirnetX and Microsoft) is infringing six of the company's patents. Monday, April 8, 12:49 PM VirnetX (VHC +9.4%) surges after stating it has identified another developing specification for 4G core networks for which its patents/applications "are or may become essential." Friday, April 5, 2:11 PM Google, BlackBerry, Red Hat, and Earthlink submit a paper (.pdf) to the FTC and DOJ calling for actions against perceived patent trolls, arguing such firms cost U.S. companies $80B in 2011 after factoring both direct and indirect costs. To back up their stance, the companies claim suits from "patent assertion entities" have risen 4x since '05, and now account for 62% of all IP suits. The paper arrives 6 weeks after Pres. Wednesday, April 3, 1:23 PM VirnetX (VHC +4.4%) catches a bid as it files a request for a new infringement trial against Cisco. The IP holding firm alleges Cisco was guilty of "inappropriate conduct and arguments" during a recently-concluded trial in which a Texas jury found Cisco not guilty of infringement. VirnetX has issued a PR noting the Texas jury handling its suit against Cisco did conclude the patent claims asserted by VirnetX were valid (Cisco was claiming prior art), while also concluding Cisco isn't infringing the claims. Thursday, March 14, 3:48 PM VirnetX (VHC -29.7%) has lost its infringement suit against Cisco (CSCO), as the jury deliberating over the suit rules against the company. Apple's motions for a new trial and reduced damages were denied, and the company has been ordered to pay $330K in daily damages and $33.6K in daily interest up to final judgment. However, VirnetX's request for a permanent injunction was also denied; the companies have been given 45 days to "mediate over a license." Friday, February 15, 12:09 PM Pres. Obama isn't a fan of patent trolls. "They are essentially trying to leverage and hijack somebody else's idea and see if they can extort some money," Obama stated during a Google+ hangout. He added, "Our efforts at patent reform are only about halfway to where we need to go." The remarks come as the DOJ and FTC hold hearings on patent trolls, and an appeals court debates whether software should be patentable.
