    Virgin Mobile (VMED) introduces the Venture, a low-end Android (GOOG) phone from Alcatel One Touch (ALU) that sells for a mere $99 without contract. The Venture and other inexpensive Android models should play a big role in boosting the U.S. smartphone penetration rate from a recently-estimated 44%, now that much of the low-hanging fruit has been picked off.

    Virgin Mobile (VMED), which offers prepaid mobile services over Sprint's (S) network, is unveiling a new ad campaign that touts the carrier's unlimited data plans, and features heavy doses of social media marketing and founder Richard Branson. By doing so, Virgin hopes to take advantage of rival low-end carrier T-Mobile's recent woes.

    TiVo (TIVO) is getting much of the credit for Virgin Media's (VMED) solid Q4 showing, which included a 30% jump in net profit driven by a doubling of consumer demand for its new pay-TV service and for super-fast broadband. Virgin now has 12% of its pay-TV customers on TiVo, just six months after the product's launch. TIVO +3.8%, VMED +3.8% premarket.

    Virgin Media (VMED), which fell yesterday following Q3 results, drops 5.1% today after Goldman removes the telco from its Conviction Buy list, arguing its capex increases will limit 2012 free cash flow. However, Nomura is coming to the company's defense, claiming its valuation is low, and a massive stock buyback program will help support shares. (Q3 transcript)

    Scripps Networks (SNI) agrees to acquire Virgin Media's (VMED) 50% stake of UKTV, a British cable channel operator, for ~$552M. The deal will allow Scripps, home of HGTV and the Food Network, to continue growing abroad, especially in Britain and Europe.
