- Tuesday, March 5, 4:44 PM VMware (VMW) sells off online PowerPoint alternative SlideRocket to private Clearslide for an undisclosed sum. The sale is part of VMWare's efforts to divest businesses that have little or nothing to do with its core virtualization and cloud/data center management software ops. VMware bought SlideRocket in April '11, when it had ambitions to provide a broader array of enterprise cloud apps and developer tools. (Pivotal Initiative) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, March 1, 7:03 PM VMware (VMW) appears set to step up its battle with Amazon Web Services (AWS): the company is reportedly working on a solution that lets clients move private cloud workloads onto a VMware-owned cloud infrastructure. The report comes as sales of VMware's costly vCloud suite pick up among private and public cloud owners, and CEO Pat Gelsinger all but declares war on AWS, which is expected by Oppenheimer to produce $3.25B in 2013 sales. Also reportedly in the works is Project Zephyr, a public cloud that directly competes with AWS, Google, Microsoft, and Rackspace. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 26, 12:36 PM EMC's Greenplum unit adds to its big data product arsenal by launching a home-grown version of the Hadoop software framework, widely used in big data projects. The product, called Pivotal HD, competes with offerings from fast-growing startup Cloudera. EMC argues Pivotal HD is differentiated by its scalability, response times, and ability to integrate with business intelligence apps and Greenplum's database software. Greenplum is one of the businesses comprising EMC and VMware's (VMW) Pivotal Initiative. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 22, 2:58 PM Pac Crest is showing rivals VMware (VMW +1.2%) and Citrix (CTXS +1.6%) some love: the firm argues VMware's Horizon PC virtualization/mobile management suite will be a 2013 growth driver, and that Citrix can beat 2013 estimates with the help of strong enterprise mobility spending. VMware just announced the Q1 availability of Horizon, which competes with Citrix's XenDesktop. Citrix, meanwhile, just announced a mobile software bundle that fuses Zenprise's device management software with its CloudGateway platform for remote mobile app/data access. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 20, 12:50 PM H-P (HPQ -0.7%) is using its reseller conference to refresh its IT hardware lineup, with an eye towards integrated offerings. New products include: 1) A blade server for PC virtualization that (relying on software from CTXS and VMW, and NVDA's Quadro GPUs) supports 4x as many virtual desktops as the prior-gen model. 2) A blade server/Ethernet swtich platform that (with the help of MLNX ASICs) that significantly increases available bandwidth. 3) A mid-range storage system that combines technology from 3PAR with integrated backup/recovery. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 19, 2:35 AM Chinese army unit 61398, also known as "Comment Crew," has been identified as most probably responsible for numerous cyberattacks on U.S. targets, security company Mandiant has alleged in a report. While Mandiant didn't name specific targets, victims include Coca Cola (KO) - when it was trying to acquire Chinese company Huiyuan Juice Group for $2.4B - and VMware's (VMW) RSA, as well as a firm with access to over 60% of oil and gas pipelines in North America. 12 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories, U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, February 13, 4:01 PM VMware (VMW -3.2%), Citrix (CTXS -1.7%), and Red Hat (RHT -1.5%). all of whom have made big bets on cloud management software, are closing lower following Rackspace's Q4 miss, which has spawned some growth concerns. All 3 companies are nominally supporters of the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform, which Rackspace helped create and strongly supports, though VMware is more focused on its rival vCloud platform and Citrix has its differences as well. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, February 11, 4:31 PM VMware (VMW -2.7%) is acquiring Virsto, developer of software that significantly improves storage performance for systems running virtualization software, both from VMware and others. Virsto also enables more efficient storage use through its support for thin provisioning tech. The purchase is the latest in a string of acquisitions (I, II, III) VMware has made as it tries to evolve into an IT infrastructure management leader. Terms aren't disclosed; look for VMware to integrate Virsto's solutions with those of parent EMC. (earlier) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, February 11, 1:09 PM VMware (VMW -2.5%) slides after Barron's suggests shares could fall another 20%+ on top of their post-earnings bludgeoning. The paper notes revenue growth has steadily decelerated over the last several years thanks to a saturating virtualization software market, and argues a forward P/E of 25 means shares are still expensive (ed: thanks to deferred revenue, VMware's price/free cash flow multiple is lower). The decline comes in spite of an upgrade to Overweight from Evercore. EMC -1.2%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 8, 12:28 PM Some Intel (INTC +1.1%) news: 1) Intel has invested $6.5M in growing software-defined networking (SDN) startup Big Switch Networks. Intel's motivation: Big Switch's SDN controller allows commodity switches using network processors from Intel and others to replace costlier switches (from Cisco, Juniper, etc.) using proprietary ASICs. Big Switch competes with VMware's (VMW) Nicira unit. 2) CNET reports Asus will launch a 7" Android tablet featuring an Intel Atom CPU later this month. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Sunday, February 3, 2:14 PM VMware's (VMW) restructuring, which includes plans to eliminate non-core products, stems from its wish "to go back to the basics of infrastructure and not the whole stack," says VC Bipul Sinha. The announcement follows VMWare and EMC's Pivotal spinoff, and leaves VMware focused on virtualization and data center/cloud management software. There's a logic to this strategy: sales of the comprehensive vCloud Suite (competes in some way with Microsoft, Amazon, Red Hat, Citrix, and OpenStack) are taking off, with customers such as AT&T singing its praises. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 30, 6:44 PM Some mobile chipmakers are ticking higher following strong calendar Q4 reports from Qualcomm and Skyworks. CRUS +0.9% AH. AVGO +1.3%. RFMD +1.2%. BRCM, TQNT, INVN, and OVTI could also end up moving. Meanwhile, strong reports from Citrix, Fortinet, and ServiceNow have produced modest gains in some enterprise IT names. RHT +1.1% AH. VMW +0.8%. FFIV +0.6%. INFA +1%. Comment! [Tech]

[On the Move] - Tuesday, January 29, 11:40 AM VMware (VMW -20.2%) has been hit by 7 downgrades in response to its poor Q1/2013 guidance. VMware's soft transactional (individual license) sales "will raise questions about the appetite for SMB customers to expand their virtualization footprint," says Goldman, which has removed shares from its Conviction Buy list. However, the firm has "yet to pick up on any material changes in the competitive landscape" in this segment. "We'd buy the shares after the smoke clears," says Oppenheimer, viewing guidance as conservative. (also) (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 9:55 AM More on EMC: The company expects 2013 revenue of $23.5B and EPS of $1.85, below a consensus of $23.6B and $1.90. $1B in buybacks expected. Along with VMware's restructuring, EMC plans a $75M restructuring of its own. Q4 high-end storage sales +6% Y/Y (+5% in Q3), mid-range +5% (flat in Q3). Greenplum and flash hardware strong. Total storage product sales +5%, services +8% (-1% and +11% prior). $290M in shares repurchased, $168M spent on VMware shares. 2012 free cash flow was $5.02B, above net income of $3.76B. EMC -6.6%.
