- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 4:57 PM More on VMware's Q3: Skype CFO Jonathan Chadwick has been named VMware's CFO - the company didn't have one before. License revenue +11% Y/Y, below revenue growth of 20% and even with Q2's 11% growth. 2012 license revenue growth of 12.8%-13.8% expected. Services +29%. Unearned revenue balance reached $3B, up $100M Q/Q. Free cash flow was $359M, above net income of $303M. R&D expenses +30% Y/Y, sales/marketing +24%. VMW +1.9% AH. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 4:06 PM VMware (VMW): Q3 EPS of $0.70 beats by $0.07. Revenue of $1.13B (+20% Y/Y) in-line. Expects Q4 revenue of $1.26B-$1.29B, in-line with $1.28B consensus. Shares +1.2% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 12:10 AM Notable earnings after Tuesday’s close: ACE, AFL, ALTR, AMGN, BCR, BNNY, BRCM, BWLD, CBI, CHRW, FB, FBC, FBHS, FTI, GILD, HTS, ILMN, INVN, IRBT, JNPR, NBR, NFLX, NFX, NSC, PLCM, PNRA, QCOR, RFMD, STM, TPX, TSS, UIS, VMW, WYNN Comment! [Earnings]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 6:29 PM Gartner now expects 2012 global IT spending of $3.6T (hurt by forex), down a bit from a prior forecast of $3.75T. Spending is expected to grow a muted 3.8% next year to $3.7T. Microsoft and IBM's Q3 reports and commentary (I, II) have already raised fears of a soft IT spending environment. Also: Gartner expects half of all non-PC devices sold in 2016, and half of all business IT devices sold at the end of the decade, will be bought by employees - that's a long-term trend that could benefit Apple and hurt Microsoft. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 5:35 PM Notable earnings after Tuesday’s close: ACE, AFL, ALTR, AMGN, BCR, BNNY, BRCM, BWLD, CBI, CHRW, FB, FBC, FBHS, FTI, GILD, HTS, ILMN, INVN, IRBT, JNPR, NBR, NFLX, NFX, NSC, PLCM, PNRA, QCOR, RFMD, STM, TPX, TSS, UIS, VMW, WYNN Comment! [Earnings]
- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 7:48 AM IBM is reportedly in advanced talks to buy Red Bend, an Israeli developer of mobile virtualization and device management software, for $200M-$250M. Red Bend's offerings, which compete with VMware (I, II) and Citrix, allow multiple operating systems to be installed on a mobile device, and help service providers handle remote updates. The company, which has over 80 customers, also offers mobile analytics tools, something that ties into Big Blue's broader analytics push. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 10:14 AM Enterprise IT stocks slump following IBM's (IBM -3.7%) Q3 revenue miss, which had much to do with drops in mainframe, storage, and middleware sales. Earnings call remarks about weak September demand aren't helping either, though some might be encouraged IBM's Chinese sales rose 19% Y/Y at a time when others (I, II) are seeing Chinese demand slump. EMC (EMC -1.5%), VMware (VMW -1.9%), Citrix (CTXS -2.2%), Red Hat (RHT -1.7%), and Tibco (TIBX -3.6%) are among the losers. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 8:21 AM Cisco (CSCO) and Citrix (CTXS) make their rumored partnership official. Among the details: 1) Cisco will recommend Citrix's NetScaler application delivery controllers (competes with hardware from FFIV and RDWR) to clients. 2) The companies will develop a cloud solution that combines Cisco's UCS servers and Nexus switches with Citrix's CloudPlatform (competes with VMW's vCloud). 3) The companies will develop mobile solutions that feature their collaboration, remote access, and file-sharing tools. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, October 9, 2012, 11:19 AM VMware (VMW -4.7%) sells off after OTR Global claims Microsoft's (MSFT) new virtualization and management software products are hurting VMware's sales. The latest version of Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization platform, recently launched as a part of Windows Server 2012, has received favorable reviews, and so has an update to Microsoft's System Center management software. But the huge enterprise investments made in VMware's vSphere platform make it hard to dislodge. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 4, 2012, 5:54 PM More on Cisco: The company shows it's serious about software-defined networking (SDN) by acquiring vCider, a developer of a software-based controller for managing switches that span multiple data centers. Cisco plans to use vCider's tech in SDN solutions that supports the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform. The threat posed by SDN has been weighing on the Street since VMware (VMW) bought Nicira. GigaOm notes vCider's software bears a resemblance to VMware's VXLAN. (also) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 10:02 AM EMC has named John Roese, most recently Huawei's North American R&D chief, its new CTO. Roese replaces Jeff Nick, who has been "transitioned to a new CTO role" in support of Chief Strategist and ex-VMware CEO Paul Maritz. EMC and VMware (VMW) saw a major executive shakeup in July. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, September 6, 2012, 5:55 PM EMC discloses CEO Joe Tucci will remain at the company until Feb. 2015. Prior to that time, he'll step down as CEO, and transition to solely being chairman of EMC and 80%-owned VMware (VMW). Tucci, 65, recently cancelled plans to retire at an earlier date. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 11:45 AM Deutsche's Brian Modoff is encouraged by the expansion of Cisco's (CSCO) partnership with VMware (VMW): he thinks the tie-up demonstrates VMware's networking virtualization solutions (courtesy of Nicira) won't fully eliminate the value-add delivered by Cisco's switches and routers, as many have feared. He also sees VMware's new cloud management solutions and related partnership with F5 (FFIV) creating a barrier to entry for F5's application delivery controllers. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 5:57 PM Announced on day 2 of VMware's (VMW) VMworld conference: 1) The Horizon Suite, a set of VMware mobile software tools for managing enterprise apps/data (previous). 2) New reference architectures and proclamations of loyalty from Cisco (CSCO) and EMC related to their VCE JV, no doubt meant to calm customers reading the news. 3) The addition of data deduplication tech and stronger VMware integration for EMC's VFCache server flash modules, which compete with FIO's solutions. (Day 1: I, II, III) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 5:14 PM Some notable partnerships announced on the first day of VMware's (VMW) VMworld conference: 1) Cisco (CSCO), in spite of tensions with VMware, will be making "joint engineering investments" with the company, and will integrate its switches and servers with VMware's virtualization and management software. 2) Parent EMC's Avamar data protection software will be bundled with VMware's virtualization software - that's a potential negative for SYMC and CVLT. (other partnerships: I, II, III, IV) (earlier: I, II) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 1:26 PM More on VMware: The company is also announcing new storage and security-related virtualization solutions for SMBs, a relatively under-penetrated market, and a partnership with Intel related to the latter's Trusted Execution security tech. Also, in the latest sign of its willingness to support open platforms (in spite of selling the proprietary vCloud), VMware is now supporting the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform, backed by Rackspace (RAX) and many IT giants. Recent acquisitions Nicira and DynamicOps are both OpenStack backers. Comment! [Tech]
