- Thursday, May 16, 1:49 PM Biotech names are weak today on the back of several ASCO data presentation releases: REGN -2.3%, ALXN -4.2%, VRTX -2.3%, CELG -4.5%, ARRY -2.2%, AMGN -1.4%. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 30, 4:54 PM More on Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX): Q1 beats on both EPS and revenue, but net profit swung to a loss on a 25% drop in total sales as fewer patients initiated treatment - leading to a 42% drop in Incivek revenue - and its bottom line was hit by a write down tied to its hepatitis C program. The drug devoeloper has now reported four straight quarters of losses amid slumping sales of Incivek as patients and doctors await new therapies from other drug developers. Shares +1% AH. Comment! [Healthcare, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 30, 4:13 PM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX): Q1 EPS of $0.03 beats by $0.21. Revenue of $328M (-25% Y/Y) beats by $20M. (PR). Shares +0.3% AH. Comment! [Earnings, Healthcare, Breaking News]
- Saturday, April 27, 10:53 PM Combining Gilead's (GILD) sofosbuvir and Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY) daclatasvir cures 100% of hepatitis C patients in 12 weeks (including those who failed treatment with Vertex's (VRTX) Incivek and Merck's (MRK) Victrelis) and looks to be a better treatment option for those with genotype 3 than a combo of sofosbuvir and another GILD drug ledipasvir. The problem: "GILD very clearly wants to develop in-house," one clinician tells Bloomberg. (See also: ABBV's HCV treatment successful; VRTX teams with BMY on HCV trial) 5 Comments [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, April 24, 10:03 AM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX -3.4%) slips after SA contributor Edward Vranic highlights a recent insider transaction by the company's CFO. Form 4 filings seem to show a large block of shares transacted on April 19, the day the stock rose more than 60% on positive Phase 2 trial data (I, II, III). Earlier this week, S&P equity research raised their price target to $100 from $60, adding to a slew of positive analyst coverage the stock has received over the past week. Cramer's take: "Don't sell your Vertex, [it] has a breakout drug right now." 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]

OSH -9%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Friday, April 19, 9:17 AM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX), which probably didn't need any more catalysts, gets a lift from upgrades at both Canaccord (Buy from Hold) and Goldman (Neutral from Sell). Canaccord says "the CF corrector discovery platform" has been validated and the "likelihood for trial success and uptake" has increased. Goldman admits to being "completely wrong" about the prospects for VRTX's CF combo platform. Price targets: $96 at Canaccord and $86 at Goldman. Shares +62% premarket. Comment! Friday, April 19, 9:15 AM
Premarket gainers: VRTX +62%. IMOS +17%. CE +9%.
Losers: AIRM -18%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, April 19, 7:41 AM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) now up 57% premarket after reporting positive test results last night. Previously bullish Deutsche raises its price target to $100 from $75, thinking the company could earn $10/share in 2015 and putting the stock's fair value as high as $150. Goldman's on the case, upgrading to Hold from Sell and raising its price target to $86 from $38. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 5:49 PM Wells Fargo's Brian Abrahams likes the news on Vertex (VRTX), saying it cleanly validates the efficacy of it's corrector/potentiator approach, and meaningfully increases the likelihood of success in its '809/Kalydeco Phase III program, and at worst gives VRTX a high probability shot for '661/Kalydeco to capture this multi-billion dollar opportunity. As such, Abrahams sees significant upside potential from the news. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Thursday, April 18, 4:20 PM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) jumps 49% after the bell as the company says data from a Phase 2 study of a combined corrector/potentiator treatment for cystic fibrosis patients with two copies of the F508del gene mutation showed "statistically significant, dose-dependent, improvements in lung function. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 10, 12:53 PM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX +4%) posts a gain this morning after Chardan Capital Markets starts the shares with a Buy rating and a price target of $80 a share. The firm is taking a much more aggressive stance than Canaccord yesterday, who initiated the shares with a Hold and a modest $55 price target. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, April 8, 12:31 PM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX -3.6%) slips today on a tepid start from Canaccord with a Hold rating and modest $55 price target. The firm says its key value driver is its VX-809/Kalydeco combination therapy for cystic fibrosis, for which Phase 3 data is due out in 2014, but the the near-term focus is on top-line Phase 2 data for VX-661/Kalydeco, which is due out in Q2 and may show only modest improvements. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 10:35 AM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX +0.1%) bucks a weak tape this morning after saying it's entered into a non-exclusive agreement with Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY -0.3%) to conduct Phase 2 studies of VRTX's VX-135 in combination with BMY's daclatasvir for the treatment of hepatitis C. As part of the agreement, VRTX will also conduct two Phase 2 studies of the combination, including an initial study in treatment-naive people with genotype 1 HCV infection. The second study is planned for Q2. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Monday, March 4, 9:04 AM Vertex Pharmaceuticals' (VRTX) VX-787 flu treatment achieves "statistically significant improvements in viral and clinical measurements of infection" in a Phase II trial and meets its primary endpoint. VX-787 is a new class of medicine that is "designed to directly inhibit replication of the virus." VX-787 was also "generally well-tolerated, with no adverse events leading to discontinuation." (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Friday, February 1, 2:11 PM Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX +1.4%) gains after announcing earlier that the Health Service Executive in the Republic of Ireland will fund Kalydeco. The drug is the first to treat the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis for people ages 6 and older who have at least one copy of the G551D mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene, and helps the defective protein function more normally.
