- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 4:25 PM Why was T-Mobile USA finally able to reach an iPhone deal? Because it's ending phone subsidies next year. In a radical move, the struggling low-end carrier says all phones it sells will soon have to be paid for in full, up-front or via installments. With the iPhone 5 (AAPL) selling for $649-$849 unsubsidized, its sales stand to be disproportionately affected. T-Mobile's move will hurt business with customers who demand high-end hardware for $200 or less, but will also allow it to shift entirely to its cheap Value Plans. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 1:51 PM Verizon Communications (VZ) declares $0.515/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 4.67%. For shareholders of record Jan. 10. Payable Feb. 01. Ex-div date Jan. 08. (PR) 1 Comment [Dividends]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 12:12 PM It looks like T-Mobile USA is finally getting the iPhone: Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY.PK) says its U.S. unit "has entered into an agreement with Apple (AAPL +2.1%) to bring products to market together in 2013." It doesn't provide further details, other than to say the deal will hurt DT's 2013 free cash flow (likely thanks to big purchase requirements/subsidies). Many were expecting an announcement this week. MetroPCS (PCS +1.7%), slated to merge with T-Mobile USA, is up a bit. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 2:39 PM Though Verizon (VZ) has an edge on AT&T (T) when it comes to 4G LTE coverage, AT&T might soon open a lead in download speeds. Research firm TBR says it believes AT&T will launch 4G services based on the LTE Advanced standard, which supports 100 Mbps+ speeds (in lab environments anyway), in 2H13, citing recent executive comments. Verizon has said it will support LTE Advanced, but hasn't provided a timetable. Clearwire's (CLWR) LTE network will support the standard from the start. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 9:44 AM Redbox Instant won't see a commercial launch until the end of Q1 or the beginning of Q2, Verizon (VZ) CEO Lowell McAdam recently stated at a UBS conference (previous). A recent GigaOm report suggested a Dec. 17 launch was possible. The Verizon/Coinstar (CSTR) streaming service, currently undergoing employee beta tests, is now expected to begin customer trials in late January. Verizon's Web content initiatives have a history of underwhelming. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 6:19 PM A U.S. appeals court has upheld a 2011 FCC ruling that requires major carriers such as Verizon Wireless (VZ) and AT&T (T) to strike mobile data roaming deals with smaller rivals on "commercially reasonable terms." In theory at least, this should make it easier for smaller carriers such as U.S. Cellular (USM), Leap Wireless (LEAP), and NTELOS (NTLS) to offer nationwide data services. However, the fact 4G phones rely on a smorgasbord of frequency bands could cause some problems. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 10:52 AM Any acquisitions made by Verizon (VZ) will be in the "tens of millions of dollars" range, says CEO Lowell McAdam at a UBS conference - the fact regulators might frown on a large mobile purchase could be a reason why. McAdam also states Verizon is seeing its Q3 momentum extend into Q4, and that stock buybacks could arrive in 12-18 months. Unlike AT&T, Verizon has held off on making buybacks, in part because of the giant cash distributions made by Verizon Wireless. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, December 3, 2012, 2:47 PM Like many other carriers, Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) continues to stumble in its efforts to create popular home-grown Internet services. Less than a month after announcing it would shut down its Android/BlackBerry app store, Big Red says it's shuttering its V Cast mobile video service, provided in a variety of paid subscription service bundles. Instead, Verizon will promote its new Viewdini video search service, which aggregates content from Netflix, Hulu, and other third parties. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, November 30, 2012, 6:58 AM Redbox Instant video streaming service will launch as soon as December 17, according to a GigOm report. Subscriptions for unlimited access will start at $6 a month. The service - a byproduct of a joint venture between Coinstar (CSTR) and Verizon (VZ) - will be available for web users, iOS devices, Xbox 360 consoles, and some Samsung TVs and Blu-Ray players. 6 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 2:36 PM For yet another year, a Consumer Reports survey of U.S. mobile users has rated AT&T (T) the worst major U.S. carrier. Verizon Wireless (VZ) was again given top marks, and was followed by Sprint (S) and T-Mobile. An August J.D. Power study yielded similar rankings. Consumer Reports did, however, give AT&T the highest satisfaction score among 4G users, even though its LTE network coverage trails Verizon's. (last year) 7 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 11:11 PM Google (GOOG) has held talks with Dish Network (DISH) about building a massive 4G network using Dish's spectrum, the WSJ reports, while cautioning the talks "aren't advanced and could amount to nothing." Such a tie-up would be costly for Google and risk hurting carrier support for Android, but there would also be benefits. Google "wants people to watch 10 hours of YouTube a day ... what hurts them is [wireless carriers] restricting capacity," observes BTIG's Walter Piecyk. Sprint (S) and Clearwire (CLWR) have been named in the past as potential Dish partners (I, II). 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 4:47 AM Vodafone (VOD) CEO Vittorio Colao says that the company regularly reviews what to do with its 45% stake in Verizon Wireless and that he can't rule out a sale of the asset. Such a move would tie in with Vodafone's global strategy of divesting minority stakes that it holds in carriers, but Verizon contributes over half the U.K. group's adjusted operating profit and is a major growth engine. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 5:49 PM U.S. carriers are doing what they can to try to give Windows Phone (MSFT) a mass following. Verizon Wireless (VZ) says it will offer a Windows Phone model for free with contract by year's end, but doesn't say from whom. Big Red currently offers HTC's high-end 8X for $199, and Nokia's (NOK) mid-range Lumia 822 for $99. Sprint (S), meanwhile, promises to introduce WP models next year. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 4:11 PM Verizon Wireless says it will distribute an aggregate $8.5B to 55% owner Verizon (VZ) and 45% owner Vodafone (VOD) by year's end. A $10B distribution was made last year, but Verizon had been non-committal until now about a follow-up. VOD +2.2% AH. VZ +0.2%. (PR) 7 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 11:41 AM Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) plans to finish its 4G LTE rollout by the middle of 2013, says CFO Fran Shammo. That's 6 months ahead of Verizon's original plan, and 18 months ahead of AT&T (T), which wants to offer LTE to 300M Americans by the end of 2014. Verizon plans to cover 260M people by year's end, well above AT&T's 150M. Shammo adds 13% of Verizon's customers now use its expensive shared data plans, and that he'd "love to see [Windows Phone 8] be a successful platform. (AT&T capex) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 6:53 PM Cord-cutting isn't doing tremendous damage to the pay-TV industry, but it is leading penetration rates to fall a bit. U.S. pay-TV providers collectively shed 127K subs in Q3, per Bernstein's data, as a net loss of 499K cable subs offset a net gain of 372K telco/satellite subs. But that figure is below Q2's 410K decline, and still leaves the industry with a small net increase over the last 4 quarters. (Nielsen) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
