    Get ready as earnings season really takes off next week: Major banks (C, WFC, BAC), from whom analysts expect improvement; somewhat worse results expected from I-banks (GS, MS) on low trading activity; a rash of big pharma; AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ); airlines; and on Monday Apple (AAPL) leads off big tech results, which include IBM, AMZN, EBAY and YHOO.

    Apple (AAPL +0.5%) says it will sell iPads through retail stores owned by AT&T (T +0.2%) and Verizon (VZ +0.7%) beginning Oct. 28. AT&T will sell the models that use its 3G wireless network, while Verizon will sell the 3G models as well as those that only work on a Wi-Fi network. It's the first mobile deal between Apple and Verizon.

    AT&T (T), Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD), Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY.PK) and Sprint (S) are among the major firms reportedly interested in a Clearwire (CLWR) auction of wireless airwaves. Clearwire is trying to fund the expansion of its high-speed wireless network, and the sale could bring in as much as $5B. CLWR +10.1% premarket.

    The search for higher yields is driving the biggest rally in seven years for telephone stocks, despite lagging profit forecasts for the sector. Telecoms account for five of the 10 largest dividends in the S&P 500 and yield 5.45% as a group. Among individual companies: FTR, 8.94%; WIN, 8.24%; CTL, 7.3%; T, 5.96%, VZ, 5.94%.

    A recent survey showed that 23% of AT&T (T) iPhone users would switch to Verizon (VZ) if given the chance. But iPhone (AAPL) owners should think twice before jumping ship: Verizon's CDMA network means customers can't surf online while talking on the phone, won't be able to use their phone as broadly internationally, and will chew through their batteries faster.

    Apple (AAPL -0.1%) plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless (VZ -0.4%) to sell the smartphone early next year, WSJ reports. The new iPhone would be based on CDMA wireless technology used by Verizon. This would spell the end of AT&T's (T -3.7%) exclusive U.S. arrangement with Apple. The new phone will use a chip made by Qualcomm (QCOM +0.5%).

    AT&T (T +1.5%) adds three new Android-based Mototola (MOT +1.3%) smartphones to its current lineup of six models. AT&T, currently the exclusive U.S. provider for Apple's (AAPL +3.1%) iPhone, has been looking to expand its smartphone line-up amid speculation it will lose iPhone exclusivity next year to Verizon Wireless (VZ +1.4%).

    Verizon Wireless (VZ) says it will pay millions of dollars in refunds to 15M cell phone customers who were erroneously charged for data sessions or internet use. Customers would receive credits or refund checks typically in the $2-$6 range on their October or November bills.

    A half-million iPhone (AAPL) owners use AT&T's (T) network to connect to the internet, but they don't seem too happy about it: Nearly half of users surveyed would be "very interested" in dumping AT&T for Verizon (VZ) as a service provider. "If another carrier were to pick up the iPhone, you would probably see a number of defections."

    Goldman's formula for finding strong yield stocks: When a company's bond yields are falling, investors are confident that it has the cash to meet coupon payments. And if the firm has that kind of cash, it likely has the cash to continue and perhaps raise payouts to stock investors. With that in mind, Goldman's favorites are MO, CTL, VZ, T, PM, EXC, BMY, PFE, COP, AEP.

    Verizon (VZ) names wireless chief Lowell McAdam as president and COO, clearing up the question of who will succeed CEO Ivan Seidenberg, who turns 64 this year. Verizon has lacked a president and COO since Dennis Strigl retired in 2009.
