- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 8:20 AM Walgreen (WAG) announces that it will acquire regional drugstore chain from the LaFrance family for $438M. The transaction includes stores running under the USA Drug, Super D Drug, Mays Drug, Med-X and Drug Warehouse banner. The company also reports that June same-store sales decreased 10.0% after generic introductions and the Express Scripts dispute adversely affected results. Shares -0.9% premarket. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 1:39 PM While the Supreme Court opinion on healthcare is being called a drag on the retail sector by industry insiders, especially so for high-growth stories such as Chipotle (CMG -4.6%), Starbucks (SBUX -2.1%), and Dunkin' Brands (DNKN -3.2%), NBG's Brian Sozzi suggests a way to trade the news. He throws out WAG, CVS, and TGT as retail names that already have their employee structure in place and could be good long-term plays under the current retail environment. 5 Comments [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, June 25, 2012, 3:40 PM Walgreen's (WAG -1.9%) may be looking to bypass Cardinal Health (CAH -2.2%) in order to source branded drugs directly, says Cleveland Research, and the Boots acquisition may support the initiative. Manufacturer support appears mixed however, and the firm thinks CAH remains a best idea. Comment! [Healthcare, Consumer]

While Walgreen's (WAG +0.1%) proposed $6.7B bet on Europe-based Alliance Boots sparked a sell-off in its shares, Smead Capital's Bill Smead says the move will look "pretty darn smart" once the region recovers. With everyone "afraid to take risks, this may be the first step in establishing global drugstore chains," Smead says.
Comment! [M&A, Healthcare] - Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 9:30 AM Shares of Walgreen (WAG) move down 1.9% premarket after taking on a downgrade from both Argus and Macquarie. The loss comes on top of a 5.9% hit yesterday. At its current trading price, WAG's price-earnings ratio is in single digits and its yield crossed over the 3% mark. 4 Comments [On the Move, Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 7:26 AM Macquarie downgrades Walgreen (WAG) to Neutral from Outperform after sizing up the company's pricey acquisiton of Alliance Boots. Analysts with Macquarie see the buy as a head-scratcher that doesn't address soft U.S. traffic trends or pharmacy sales. A counterpoint comes from Stone Fox Capital with its take that yesterday's selloff was overdone on fears about anything related to Europe. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 9:03 AM Shares of Walgreen (WAG) have lost early premarket gains following the company's FQ3 earnings report and are now trading down 6.8%. It's the big $6.7B bet on Alliance Boots that has grabbed the attention of traders over the company's penny miss on earnings. 2 Comments [On the Move, Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 6:34 AM More on Walgreen (WAG): Front-end comparable store sales fell 0.9%, on lower traffic but increased average basket size. Results negatively impacted by $0.01/share due to transaction with Alliance Boots. SG&A expenses 1.6% lower Y/Y to $62M. Shares +1.1% premarket. (PR) 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 6:12 AM Walgreen (WAG): FQ3 EPS of $0.62 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $17.8B (-3.4% Y/Y) in-line. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 6:11 AM Walgreen (WAG) increases its dividend 22.2% to $0.275/share, its 37th consecutive year of dividend hikes. Walgreen is also investing $6.7B in cash-and-stock for a 45% equity ownership stake in Alliance Boots. 2 Comments [Breaking News, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 10:46 AM Walgreen (WAG +0.9%) trades higher with scuttlebutt swirling about that the company may be close to signing a deal with Express Scripts (ESRX -1.5%) to end their contract impasse. A settlement has been viewed as more likely ever since the companies dropped litigation against each other earlier this month. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 8:21 AM Walgreen (WAG) reports total sales fell off 1.6% in May and comparable store front-end sales declined 1%. Although prescriptions filled at comparable stores decreased 7.6% Y/Y, the company claims that the underlying trend has improved. Shares -1.6% premarket. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 11:37 AM Walgreen (WAG +0.1%) extends its contract to provide pharmacy services to members of UnitedHealth's (UNH +0.2%) OptumRx drug-benefit plans. The multi-year deal comes as Walgreen suffers sales declines after not renewing its agreement with Express Scripts. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 10:58 AM Walgreen (WAG +0.6%) gives back a good chunk of its premarket gain as traders continue to digest just where the WAG-ESRX impasse stands. Complicating matters, the company reports May sales numbers this week which will highlight once again the revenue it's leaving on the table by not taking on Express Scripts customers. But BMO Capital's take is that Walgreen will ultimately outlast Express Scripts and get close to the premium its wants for the ESRX business. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 8:50 AM Shares of Walgreen (WAG) move up 3.4% premarket off of news that Express Scripts (ESRX) and the company have dropped claims against each other. Though a new contract isn't in place yet that allows Walgreen customers to fill their Express Scripts prescriptions, ending back-and-forth litigation is certainly a step in the right direction. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, June 1, 2012, 7:07 PM Walgreens (WAG) and Express Scripts (ESRX) agree to dismiss their dispute filed in September 2011. WAG issued the following statement: "The parties have agreed to dismiss their respective claims, and no other action has been or will be taken by either party with respect to this case. These dismissals have no impact on the parties' ability or inability to come to terms on a pharmacy agreement." WAG -1.2% AH. 1 Comment [On the Move]
