Shares of Mondelez International (MDLZ +0.1%), General Mills (GIS +0.6%), and Walgreen (WAG +2.3%) all turned slightly higher after word broke that Bill Ackman's hedge fund will take a 5% activist stake in a large-cap company. Though the moves could be purely speculative, all three fit the Ackman profile in some ways.

Walgreen (WAG) reports total sales increased 2.5% in June while comparable store sales were up 0.8%. The drugstore operator made up for a drop in customer traffic with an average basket size that rose 3.7%. The percentage of Express Scripts prescriptions returning to Walgreens pharmacies increased again during the month. WAG -1.0% premarket, with investors perhaps a tad disappointed the sales numbers weren't better off of a soft comparable from last year.

Vivus (VVUS) makes its Qsymia weight-loss medication available in retail pharmacies around two weeks early, with the drug now on the shelves at an initial 8,000 Walgreen (WAG), Costco (COST) and Duane Reade outlets. The early retail availability of Qsymia comes amid searing criticism of Vivus and its launch of the drug from activist shareholder First Manhattan, which wants to replace the whole of the company's board. The FDA closes down 1.6K fake pharmacies operating on the Internet including at least a couple that were posing as the online presence of Walgreen (WAG -0.2%) and CVS Caremark (CVS -0.1%). A concerted crackdown on counterfeit drug sales is presumed to be positive for drugstore operators Walgreen, Rite Aid (RAD +1.6%), and CVS Caremark although it's tricky for analysts to put a number to the impact.

Hertz (HTZ) is working with retailers such as Lowe's (LOW) and Walgreen (WAG), as well as with parking lot operator Standard Parking (STAN), to expand its reach beyond airports so that customers can rent cars at any hour and for any length of time. Hertz aims expand its neighborhood locations to 12,000 over the next few years from 2,600 now as it looks to challenge the leadership of Avis (CAR) in the hourly rental category and of Enterprise in the non-airport segment.

Retail watch: Walgreen's (WAG -7%) FQ3 earnings report may have tipped off a disturbing industry trend, according to analysts. Front-end sales dropped 3.9% during the quarter as the pattern of soft traffic for the drugstore sector (RAD, CVS) continues. Though the dollar store group (DLTR, DG, FDO) has been a competitive threat for items such as toiletries and greeting cards, it's the grocery sector (SWY, KR, SVU) which may taken the bigger slice of the consumables pie.

More on Walgreen's (WAG) FQ3: Though the drug store operator picked up market share during the quarter, sales and profit missed the mark of analysts. Front-end comparable store sales were only up 0.4% as the higher average basket size at stores couldn't offset a tough 3.9% drop in traffic. (PR)

More on ICSC Retail Sales: The retail sector put in a mixed week with department stores, electronics store chains (RSH, BBY), and drug stores (CVS, WAG, RAD) strong for the period, but sales at dollar stores (DG, DLTR, FIVE, FDO) and wholesale clubs (COST, PSMT) notably weak. After last week's drop in sales cut into forward progress, the year-over-year gain in retail chain store sales stands 2.5% higher after threatening a 3% pace earlier in the year.

Accenture thinks the number of retail health clinics opening up in store settings like drugstores will double by the end of 2015. Though medical professionals warn about fragmented healthcare, the ease of service and lower costs of the care clinics could keep demand high. It's a trend to watch for CVS Caremark (CVS), Walgreen (WAG), Target (TGT), and Wal-Mart (WMT) as the retailers look to take advantage of expanded health insurance coverage in the U.S.

Walgreen (WAG -0.2%) reaches a settlement with the DEA over accusations it violated record-keeping and dispensing rules under the Controlled Substances Act which led to the illegal distribution of oxycodone in Florida. The civil suit was reportedly settled for $80M.

More on ICSC Chain Store Sales: A broad drop in retail demand was attributed in part to torrential rain on the East Coast. The biggest week-over-week declines were in the categories of drug stores (RAD, CVS, WAG) and office supply stores (SPLS, OMX, ODP). Compared to last year, chain store sales were 2.2% higher.
