- Wednesday, March 20, 1:26 PM H-P's (HPQ +0.8%) internal processes are being overhauled left and right, says tech/operations chief John Hinshaw ahead of today's shareholder meeting. The changes, which cover sales, procurement, and much else, may have contributed to H-P's FQ1 EPS beat. A lot of the changes involve the use of cloud software: Hinshaw claims H-P has the world's largest Salesforce (CRM) and Workday (WDAY) implementations (ORCL software was replaced) and that using Salesforce has led to huge improvements in sales efficiency and job satisfaction. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 20, 12:34 PM FBN launches coverage on a slew of enterprise/cloud software and Web hosting/CDN service plays. Akamai (AKAM +1.9%), Equinix (EQIX +0.6%), VMware (VMW +1.3%), Citrix (CTXS +1.3%), Salesforce (CRM +0.7%), and NetSuite (N +1.7%) have been started at Outperform, while Rackspace (RAX +2.6%), Workday (WDAY), and Concur (CNQR -1.3%) have been started at Sector Perform. - Friday, March 8, 11:32 AM Strong customer and subscription sales growth help Workday (WDAY +3%) turn positive following its FQ4 report, in spite of lofty multiples. On the earnings call, Workday noted its subscription backlog totaled $434M at quarter's end (+80% Y/Y), and suggested international sales investments are a priority - most of Workday's sales still come from the U.S. Management also talked up the potential of Workday's upcoming Big Data and Recruiting products. William Blair (Outperform) cautions a 63M-share lockup expiration arrives on April 10 (Workday's current float is only 26M). Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, March 7, 5:58 PM More on Workday: FQ1 guidance is for revenue of $83M-$87M vs. an $86.4M consensus. FY14 (ends Jan. '14) guidance is for revenue of $420M-$435M vs. a $425M consensus. FQ4 subscription sales +105% Y/Y, above rev. growth of 89%. Unearned revenue balance +13% Q/Q and +52% Y/Y. Over 50 customers added, raising total above 400. Opex +69% Y/Y, fueled by big increases in sales/marketing and R&D. WDAY -3.1% AH after falling 4.5% in regular trading - investors may have been looking for above-consensus guidance, given Workday's multiples. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, March 7, 4:17 PM Workday (WDAY): Q4 EPS of -$0.16 beats by $0.05. Revenue of $81.5M (+89% Y/Y) beats by $3.26M. Shares -2.7% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech, On the Move]

- Friday, March 1, 1:00 PM Surging deferred revenue and healthy free cash flow (over 2x earnings) help Salesforce (CRM +7.8%) make new highs following its FQ4 report. Needham, lifting its PT to $200, is pleased 7 and 8-figure deals rose 50% Y/Y, albeit while admitting bookings growth (28%) benefited from forex and deal timing. On the earnings call, Marc Benioff promised more M&A - "We're going to buy small and big. We're going to be aggressive." - and boasted 3M+ apps have been developed on Heroku and Force.com. WDAY +2.2%. N +2%. MKTG +2.6%. ET +1.8%. ULTI +1.5%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, February 22, 7:09 PM Informatica (INFA) is helping Workday (WDAY) and NetSuite (N) address one of the main critiques levied at enterprise cloud software firms: that their offerings (unlike traditional end-to-end solutions from the likes of Oracle and SAP) fail to play nice with complementary software. A new integration template from Informatica syncs data between Workday's cloud HR apps and Netsuite's cloud ERP apps in real-time. The announcement comes a week after Informatica unveiled a data connector for Amazon's Redshift service. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 14, 2:37 PM Tiger Global still owned nearly 10% of Groupon (GRPN - previous) at the end of Q4, the money manager discloses in its latest 13F. However, Tiger liquidated its sizable positions in LinkedIn (LNKD - 2M shares), Facebook (FB -11.8M shares), and Google (GOOG - 698K shares). A 1M-share position was established in First Solar (FSLR), a 525K-share position in Workday (WDAY), a 3.8M-share position in YY (YY +4.5% - spiking higher) , and a 1.5M-share position in Motorola Solutions (MSI). Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 1, 4:51 PM Workday (WDAY +0.2%) missed out on today's rally after Barclays' Raimo Lenschow launched coverage with an Equal Weight and $58 PT. Like many others (I, II, III) on the sell side, he loves the company and dislikes the valuation, arguing a small float (22.75M shares were sold in the October IPO) has produced "a large liquidity premium." He's concerned an April 10 lockup expiration could change that dynamic. Workday has mostly gone sideways since its blockbuster IPO. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, January 28, 11:07 PM VMware's (VMW) weak Q1 guidance sparked an AH selloff in enterprise IT names. CTXS -3.1%. RHT -2.2%. CRM -1.2%. WDAY -1.3%. FFIV -1.3%. NTAP -2.4%.The guidance comes amidst concerns the virtualization software market is becoming saturated, and that Microsoft's free Hyper-V platform is proving a tough competitor. On the earnings call, VMware boasted of strong vCloud sales, but added it's seeing soft demand in the U.S and remains worried about Europe. Headcount is expected to grow by 1K in 2013 in spite of the job cuts. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, January 4, 5:54 PM Global SaaS/cloud software sales will rise a solid 25% this year to $59B, and another 25% in 2014 to $74B, predicts Forrester. The research firm also sees corporate adoption of Apple (AAPL) hardware continuing to grow: it expects Mac/iPad sales to businesses growing to $18B in 2013 from $15B in $2012. Forrester's original forecast for 2012 corporate Mac/iPad sales proved aggressive. Needham (citing Gartner data) has estimated Mac sales to U.S. businesses rose 49% Y/Y in Q3. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 11:31 AM Some enterprise software names are rallying in the wake of Oracle's (ORCL +3.4%) FQ2 beat, which was fueled by strong software license sales. VMW +3.7%. WDAY +2.9%. SPLK +2.6%. INFA +2.2%. JIVE +3.5%. Also, Mellanox (MLNX +4.9%) is getting a lift from the strong performance of Oracle's engineered systems business. Oracle noted on its earnings call its app license growth was north of 30%. Goldman estimates total license growth received a 600 bps boost from acquisitions, but is still impressed. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 11:05 AM Workday (WDAY -3.8%) has given back yesterday's AH gains, as a steep valuation overshadow a strong FQ3 beat and solid FQ4 guidance. SA's Robert Broens notes the mid-point of Workday's revenue guidance range implies 10.6% Q/Q growth, down from FQ3's 15.8%, though judging by the FQ3 beat, the company might be playing it safe. During Workday's earning call, the company noted its customer base rose by 31 to 356, that the average length of contracts signed was 3.6 years, and that it's now billing less up-front, something that hurts unearned revenue over the near-term.
