Monday, February 4, 12:54 PM AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), and other U.S. telcos are on edge over an FCC proposal to free up spectrum for public Wi-Fi networks that could significantly lower mobile data usage. Intel and Qualcomm want the spectrum to be licensed, and Cisco is raising interference concerns - all 3 have an interest in keeping carriers happy. However, Google and Microsoft support the proposal. With carrier data ARPUs surging and voice ARPUs declining, the stakes are high. If the project goes ahead, it could benefit telecom Wi-Fi hardware providers RKUS, ERIC, and ARUN. 5 Comments [Tech]
Monday, November 26, 2012, 10:05 AM Google (GOOG) is buying ICOA, a top provider of Wi-Fi infrastructure services for U.S. ISPs and venue owners, for $400M. ICOA is the latest evidence of Google's growing service provider ambitions: the company is already partnering with Boingo (WIFI) to offer ad-supported Wi-Fi to Android users at thousands of U.S. hotspots, and has begun offering fiber Internet and TV services in Kansas City. Look for Google to push ad-supported services to ICOA's extensive network of "high-traffic public locations." Update: Google and ICOA deny the acquisition occurred. Thursday, August 9, 2012, 12:30 PM Boingo (WIFI -23.2%) crashes after missing Q2 estimates and guiding for 2012 revenue of $108M-$111M and EPS of $0.22-$0.27, below a consensus of $111.2M and $0.29. Deutsche is downgrading Boingo, arguing visibility is limited and the lowered guidance may still be difficult to achieve. Thursday, April 5, 2012, 6:10 PM AT&T (T) is trialing a free Wi-Fi service at DFW International Airport that requires users to watch a 30-second ad in exchange for 40 minutes of web surfing. Given airports often charge $5-$10/hour for web access, many travelers will probably take the deal. Should AT&T's trial expand and/or other service providers follow suit, it could be a problem for Boingo (WIFI), whose business model involves selling subscriptions for its Wi-Fi hotspot network. CSCO is believed to have a majority of the lucrative enterprise market, and is followed by ARUN and HPQ. Though shares are off 43% from the IPO, Credit Suisse believes the 2011 outlook is “solid,” projecting 16% revenue growth and 44% EBITDA growth.
