[On the Move] - Thursday, February 21, 4:59 PM Boingo Wireless (WIFI): Q4 EPS of $0.03 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $28M beats by $0.5M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]
- Monday, February 4, 12:54 PM AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), and other U.S. telcos are on edge over an FCC proposal to free up spectrum for public Wi-Fi networks that could significantly lower mobile data usage. Intel and Qualcomm want the spectrum to be licensed, and Cisco is raising interference concerns - all 3 have an interest in keeping carriers happy. However, Google and Microsoft support the proposal. With carrier data ARPUs surging and voice ARPUs declining, the stakes are high. If the project goes ahead, it could benefit telecom Wi-Fi hardware providers RKUS, ERIC, and ARUN. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 26, 2012, 10:05 AM Google (GOOG) is buying ICOA, a top provider of Wi-Fi infrastructure services for U.S. ISPs and venue owners, for $400M. ICOA is the latest evidence of Google's growing service provider ambitions: the company is already partnering with Boingo (WIFI) to offer ad-supported Wi-Fi to Android users at thousands of U.S. hotspots, and has begun offering fiber Internet and TV services in Kansas City. Look for Google to push ad-supported services to ICOA's extensive network of "high-traffic public locations." Update: Google and ICOA deny the acquisition occurred. The PR announcing the deal was a hoax. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 4:45 PM Boingo Wireless (WIFI): Q3 EPS of $0.07 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $26M (+5.3% Y/Y) in-line. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Tech]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 1:27 PM More Google (GOOG) news: 1) Google is harshly criticizing a proposed German law that would require search engines to pay license fees to publishers for merely excerpting the headline and first paragraph of a news article. 2) Google is expanding an ad-supported free Wi-Fi trial, conducted in partnership with Boingo (WIFI), to cover 8 malls across the U.S. 3) Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Eric Schmidt, and several other execs and board members have sold shares in August. (earlier) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, August 9, 2012, 12:30 PM Boingo (WIFI -23.2%) crashes after missing Q2 estimates and guiding for 2012 revenue of $108M-$111M and EPS of $0.22-$0.27, below a consensus of $111.2M and $0.29. Deutsche is downgrading Boingo, arguing visibility is limited and the lowered guidance may still be difficult to achieve. The spread of ad-supported Wi-Fi hotspots could be affecting Boingo; ahead of the report, the company announced it's buying Cloud Nine Media, a provider of ad-supported Wi-Fi, to address this market. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 4:35 PM Boingo Wireless (WIFI): Q2 EPS of $0.04 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $24.3M (+6.1% Y/Y) misses by $1.3M. Shares -10% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 5:41 PM Boingo Wireless (WIFI): Q1 EPS of $0.05 in-line. Revenue of $24.2M (+15% Y/Y) in-line. Shares -3.1% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 5, 2012, 6:10 PM AT&T (T) is trialing a free Wi-Fi service at DFW International Airport that requires users to watch a 30-second ad in exchange for 40 minutes of web surfing. Given airports often charge $5-$10/hour for web access, many travelers will probably take the deal. Should AT&T's trial expand and/or other service providers follow suit, it could be a problem for Boingo (WIFI), whose business model involves selling subscriptions for its Wi-Fi hotspot network. (also) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 1:33 PM Wi-Fi networking equipment sales rose 14% Y/Y in Q4, estimates Dell'Oro. CSCO is believed to have a majority of the lucrative enterprise market, and is followed by ARUN and HPQ. It's also noted that shipments to service providers rose 170% Y/Y (indirectly a positive for WIFI) and BelAir Networks, recently acquired by ERIC, is the leading provider of outdoor "mesh" Wi-Fi gear. (Q3 data) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, February 16, 2012, 4:51 PM Boingo Wireless (WIFI): Q4 EPS of $0.05 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $25.9M (+21% Y/Y) in-line. Shares +1.6% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 9, 2011, 3:12 PM Informa expects the number of public Wi-Fi hotspots available worldwide to grow 350% by 2015, to 5.8M, as carriers increasingly rely on them to deal with skyrocketing data traffic growth on their cellular networks. Boingo Wireless (WIFI), which claims to have over 400K hotspots on its global network, could be one beneficiary. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, June 13, 2011, 1:49 PM Boingo Wireless (WIFI +20.9%) bounces after four underwriters of its May IPO all initiate coverage recommending the stock. Though shares are off 43% from the IPO, Credit Suisse believes the 2011 outlook is “solid,” projecting 16% revenue growth and 44% EBITDA growth. CEO Dave Hagan sees WiFi coverage exploding, and expects to power 40% of new locations. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
