- Wednesday, May 8, 6:38 AM Wi-LAN (WILN): Q1 EPS of $0.01 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $18.4M misses by $0.02M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]
- Friday, April 5, 2:11 PM Google, BlackBerry, Red Hat, and Earthlink submit a paper (.pdf) to the FTC and DOJ calling for actions against perceived patent trolls, arguing such firms cost U.S. companies $80B in 2011 after factoring both direct and indirect costs. To back up their stance, the companies claim suits from "patent assertion entities" have risen 4x since '05, and now account for 62% of all IP suits. The paper arrives 6 weeks after Pres. Obama criticized patent trolls, and amidst expectations of Congressional action. Companies that could be affected: RMBS, IDCC, VHC, ACTG, WILN. 11 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 6, 6:57 AM Wi-LAN (WILN): Q4 EPS of $0.06 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $21.2M misses by $0.6M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Friday, February 15, 12:09 PM Pres. Obama isn't a fan of patent trolls. "They are essentially trying to leverage and hijack somebody else's idea and see if they can extort some money," Obama stated during a Google+ hangout. He added, "Our efforts at patent reform are only about halfway to where we need to go." The remarks come as the DOJ and FTC hold hearings on patent trolls, and an appeals court debates whether software should be patentable. Some IP holders accused of being patent trolls: ACTG, VRNG, RMBS, VHC, IDCC, WILN. 45 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 9:45 AM Canadian patent troll Wi-LAN (WILN) is suing Research In Motion (RIMM) in Florida for allegedly infringing a Bluetooth patent, and is seeking bans on numerous BlackBerrys to go with unspecified damages. Wi-LAN had already sued RIM in Florida over another Bluetooth patent, and over the "sym" button found on older models. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, January 23, 2012, 7:39 AM Highly litigious Wi-LAN (WILN) files suit in federal court in Florida against Research In Motion over patent infringement. (Previous WILN legal patent plays: I, II, III) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, November 11, 2011, 8:27 AM Wi-LAN (WILN) announces its so-called 759 patent was validated by the USPTO in a favorable ruling. The company says the patent - which doesn't expire until 2021 - will cover products complying with upcoming and established LTE and Bluetooth standards. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, October 31, 2011, 3:39 PM Wi-LAN (WILN +8%) is higher today after the company says it won't increase its $42 per share offer to acquire MOSAID Technologies (MBTHF.PK). The offer will expire at 5:00 pm Eastern time on November 1. Comment! [Global & FX, Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, October 28, 2011, 9:09 AM Mosaid Technologies (MBTHF.PK) agrees to a $593M takeover offer from U.S. private-equity firm Sterling Partners, a deal that tops a hostile bid from rival patent licensing firm Wi-LAN (WILN). Comment! [M&A, Tech]
- Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 5:49 PM Wi-LAN (WILN) extends its offer to acquire MOSAID Technologies to 5 p.m. EDT on Oct. 14, unless further extended or withdrawn. MOSAID has urged its shareholders to reject the company's "highly opportunistic" offer, calling it a hostile takeover. Shares -5.2% AH. Comment! [Tech, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Wednesday, September 7, 2011, 8:43 AM Mosaid Technologies's (MBTHF.PK) Board unanimously recommends shareholders reject Wi-LAN's (WILN) "highly opportunistic" hostile takeover bid of $38 per share. Comment! [M&A, Tech]
- Friday, September 2, 2011, 10:22 AM Wi-LAN (WILN), a technology licensing firm (or "patent troll," in the eyes of some), has joined Openwave (OPWV) in deciding this is a good week to sue multiple companies for wireless patent infringement. Wi-LAN's list of targets includes both giants such as AAPL and DELL, and smaller vendors such as NVTL and SWIR. (previously) Comment! [Tech]

The "extremely litigious" company filed the nuisance lawsuit in a district court in Texas well-known to favor plaintiffs. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 17, 2011, 5:16 PM Canadian technology licensing company Wi-LAN (WILN) announces that it intends to make a formal all-cash offer to acquire MOSAID Technologies (MBTHF.PK) for approximately C$480 million. WILN -9.8% AH. (PR). Comment! [Tech, Global & FX, On the Move]

$WILN sues $BBRY for LTE patent infringement. shouldn't 3rd party components cover patent fees? http://bit.ly/10fmT32 - View all 8 replies

GregScotts: Well known patent troll and all-around parasite alright, they're suing everybody; Apple; Dell; HP; HTC, etc etc -
Nazzie: Ironically I own both and am losing big bucks on the TSX Wi-Lan. I guess, whatever the result, I shall hopefully benefit. :)

Last new MFI stock is Wi-LAN $WILN. Looks like an $IDCC clone. 2.5% yield. Difficult to value, but upside on patent sales. - View all 0 replies
