- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 10:36 AM Do grocery stores face a new challenger? A of couple items from Family Dollar's (FDO +4.2%) earnings conference call (webcast) indicate consumers seem to be increasingly opting to shop at discounters for food items. The company reports that sales of food items were up over 10% Y/Y with its private labels outpacing national brands. Watching the trend: SVU, KR, SWY, WINN 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, October 1, 2012, 3:10 PM Grocery stores 2.0: Peapod rolls out its virtual grocery service in more than 100 major commuter rail stations after completing a trial run in select locations. The concept is that commuters can use their mobile devices to buy groceries for future delivery using QR codes and product bar codes. Major grocery chains have only dabbled impassionately with online ordering as foot traffic in stores is highly preferable for bottom lines and early online venture failed, but Peapod could create a splash with the mobile aspect adding convenience for consumers. Watching the trend: SWY, WFM, KR, WINN, SVU. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 8:30 AM Grocery store stocks look set to feel the sting from Supervalu's (SVU) earnings report disaster that has sent its shares into a 31% nosedive premarket. On watch: Safeway (SWY) -3.8%, Kroger (KR) -2.2%, Winn-Dixie (WINN) inactive. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 5:35 PM Winn-Dixie Stores (WINN): FQ2 EPS of -$0.33 misses by $0.11. Revenue of $2.14B (+2.3% Y/Y) in-line. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]

- Tuesday, November 1, 2011, 10:43 AM Winn-Dixie Stores (WINN +6.8%) pops after its FQ1 loss narrowed on another quarter of same-store sales growth. The company also managed to expand its profit margin by cutting expenses, despite continued food cost inflation. Overall net sales increased 3.1% to $1.6B, as same-store sales rose 3.3%. Comment! [On the Move]
- Monday, August 29, 2011, 5:36 PM Shares of Winn-Dixie (WINN) fall 5% AH after the firm misses FY11 EPS estimates by $0.02, and issues guidance for FY12 same store sales at 2.5%-3%. The grocery store chain says it sees higher operating and administrative expenses in FY12 due to increases in payroll and payroll expenses, as well as capital expenditures of $200M led by a store remodeling program. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, August 29, 2011, 11:46 AM Shares of Winn-Dixie (WINN +10.1%) are up sharply in advance of the company's Q4 earnings report tonight, but they aren't the only outperformer among grocery stores names. A heightened mindset of consumers to "stock up" following the major earthquake and hurricane within the last week may be driving sentiment. Winners include: SVU 4.7%, TFM +3.3%, RDK +3.1%. 1 Comment [On the Move, Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 20, 2011, 10:17 AM Shares of Winn-Dixie (WINN +12.5%) pop after Jefferies upgrades the firm to a Buy, and raises the price target for shares to $10.50 from $8.50. The firm's take on WINN is sales may be getting a bigger lift than expected after cycling out the effects of the Gulf oil spill. 1 Comment [On the Move, Quick Ideas, Consumer]
