- Thursday, May 16, 7:40 AM More highlights from Wal-Mart (WMT): 1) Legal expenses related to the bribery probe and FCPA issues are expected to be $65M-$70M in Q2. 2) The retailer sees U.S. stores comparable sales flat to +2% for Q2. 3) Sam's Club fees were increased on May 15 for Advantage (+$5) and Business (+$10) memberships, marking the first bump since 2006. In Q1, Sam's Club saw comp traffic up 1.3% while the average ticket was 1.1% lower. WMT -2.4% premarket. (PR) 1 Comment [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 16, 7:22 AM More on Wal-Mart's (WMT) Q1: Comparable-store sales dipped 1.4% during Q1 as the company says delayed income tax refunds and lousy weather cut into traffic. Revenue at Wal-Mart International grew 2.9% to $33B while Sam's Club sales were up just 0.1% to $13.87B. Traffic was down 1.8% across the company, a bigger drop than analysts forecast. A couple of bright spots during the quarter were booming e-commerce sales (+30%) and a gain in market share in the food, consumables and health & wellness/OTC category. The retailer sees Q2 EPS of $1.22-$1.27 vs. $1.29 consensus. WMT -1.8% premarket to $78.40. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 12:30 PM Department store chains are trading weak with weak economic indicators and chatter on weak sales trends at Wal-Mart (WMT -1.5%) swaying sentiment. The sector is already a bit jitterish with Target's (TGT -0.9%) Q1 sales warnings from earlier in the week still resonating. Decliners include Sears Holdings (SHLD -2.5%), Nordstrom (JWN -1.4%), Saks (SKS -1.6%), and Macy's (M -1.2%) - while Fred's (FRED +0.1%) and J.C. Penney (JCP +1.6%) are bucking the trend. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 27, 9:19 AM Wal-Mart (WMT) slips lower in premarket trading, down 0.8%, after the company says it expects losses of around $157M (and counting) related to the Mexico bribery scandal. Though it's a big jump from the $99M in costs from just three months ago, analysts note the amount is about where they expected it to be. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 20, 10:57 AM A number of discounter stocks are catching a tailwind today as investors seem to be shifting their attitudes toward the outlook for discretionary spending or shifting from topped-out sectors. Advancers include the dollar store group - Family Dollar Stores (FDO +2.9%), Dollar General (DG +2.5%), and Dollar Tree (DLTR +2.9%) - while Five Below (FIVE +1.3%) and Fred's (FRED +2%) are also outperforming. Even retail giants Target (TGT +1.5%) and Wal-Mart (WMT +0.7%) aren't getting left behind. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 4, 3:34 PM Retail rush: Target (TGT +3.5%) trades higher as some investors take the bet that lower oil prices might put enough cash back into the pockets of consumers to spur on spending. Also on the move: Wal-Mart (WMT +2%), Costco (COST +1.7%), and Dollar General (DG +2.1%). 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 2:48 PM Wal-Mart (WMT -3.1%) responds to a leaked internal memo indicating February sales are weak by noting to CNBC that an executive was issuing an opinion rather than any official company data. While true, the alarm bells are still ringing. The Wal-Mart VP of finance and logistics on February: "The worst start to a month I have seen in my ~7 years with the company." Look for the topic to come up during the firm's earnings conference call on February 21. 17 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 2:10 PM Wal-Mart (WMT -3%) takes another leg down after an exec confirms what Cleveland Research warned on earlier - February sales are off to a disastrous start due in part to the expiration of the payroll tax cut. No surprise, but shares of Target (TGT -2.6%) are falling hard as well. 12 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 11:43 AM Wal-Mart (WMT -2%) slides as it appears sales are taking a hit from this year's payroll tax increase. Cleveland Research says comps are running negative YTD (Street expects +1.9%) amidst a broad slowdown in consumer spending. "The magnitude at WMT seems more significant than we would have expected." 10 Comments [Consumer, Top Stories, On the Move]
- Monday, February 4, 9:05 AM More on JPMorgan's downgrade of Wal-Mart (WMT): The firm takes the line that the payroll tax increases hitting consumers will directly affect the spending habits of WMT shoppers and warns the benefits derived from improving "core competencies" have largely played out. NBG's Brian Sozzi for one thinks the rationale makes sense, will more firms move to the sidelines on the retailing giant? WMT -1.1% premarket to $69.74, still well-below JPMorgan's PT of $75. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 3, 11:09 AM Shares of Five Below (FIVE -1%) can't get out of the way out of a selling off of discounters kickstarted when Family Dollar posted disappointing FQ1 results and guidance for FQ2. Also feeling the margin pain is Fred's (FRED -2.5%) and Gordmans Stores (GMAN -0.7%) - while even Wal-Mart (WMT -1.2%) appears to be getting pulled into the fray. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 10:14 AM Wal-Mart (WMT -2.3%) bulls may have a buying opportunity as the stock slides following CEO Mike Duke saying 75% of the store's shoppers are aware of the fiscal cliff, up from 25% who knew about it before the election. Of the crowd who knows about it, 15% say it will affect their holiday spending. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 8:09 AM More on Wal-Mart's (WMT) Q3: The company doesn't disclose too many details about the effect of Hurricane Sandy on its Q3 or Q4 results, but does add some new revelations on the bribery allegations leveled against it. The company notes inquiries have been opened into potential FCPA violations in Brazil, China, and India on top of the previous misadventures it has undergone in Mexico with its business practices. WMT -2.9% premarket. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 1:42 PM NCR (NCR +6.2%) rallies after announcing Wal-Mart (WMT) will install 10K NCR self-checkout lanes in 2013 at 1,200 U.S. stores for an undisclosed sum. The company will be providing engineering and maintenance services along with its hardware. (PR) 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, October 19, 2012, 5:18 PM Emerson Radio (MSN) says Wal-Mart (WMT) has informed the company it will no longer sell two microwave products which accounted for approximately 48% of EMR's net revenues during FY12. Emerson will continue shipping these products throughout the remainder of FY13, with sales declining in 4Q13. Emerson anticipates that the full impact of Wal-Mart’s decision will be realized by the company in FY14. Shares -6% AH. 4 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 9, 2012, 2:15 PM Shares of Supervalu (SVU -7.7%) trade lower in what could be a reaction to chatter that Wal-Mart (WMT) will unveil more details about a plan to expand its small stores concept at an investor meeting tomorrow. Although Wal-Mart's ambitions for mini-stores in large metropolitan areas appears to be only small in scope at the moment, it could still be of concern to grocery stores in the future. Watching the trend: KR, SWY, WFM, DEG. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]

$DG - if $WMT is reporting low revenue, isn't it possible their customers are continuing their switch to dollar stores, making $DG Q higher? - View all 2 replies
-
Bob de'Long: We have both here. I don't see 'em as direct competitors. $DG is higher priced but have more stores = more convenient, esp w high gas prices -
Dan Greenberg: Gas definitely an issue. Seems $ stores sunk on WMT announcement couple weeks back, just wondering if that's maybe good news for trade-down
